My mother killed email for all of us...

Back in 2003 or so many people were predicting the end of email marketing. Many believed RSS feeds were going to replace email.

At the time I thought "as long as my mother is still sending me emails, email will still be around. Once she stops using email and starts using something else then it's possible email will be terminally ill."

Over the last 6 months my 71 year old mother--like millions of other people--stopped using email in favor of Facebook messages. Let's face it: For many people Facebook IS the internet. They have their social circle there. They send and receive email-like messages there. They play games there.

I suspect email may hang around, but to market effectively I suspect we will all need to use much more of a multi-channel approach.

What do you think? Is email on its way out? Are you using Facebook, Twitter or other channels effectively? Do you have any tips?

I agree with you wholeheartedly. While I do not really believe that email is dead, or that it will cease to be profitable in the long run, a multi-faceted approach is becoming an absolute must.

I am not an affilaite, nor is this a shameless plug, but for anyone that really wants to get involved with Facebook then I highly suggest picking up Imran Naseem's Facebook Arbitrage E-book.

Simple, effective, and lacking the intimidation that often comes with the idea of facebook marketing.

    Kevin,

Stuff Facebook or anything else, only you could come up with a title like that.

Wile a multi-leveled approach is always definitely better, all of these social websites still require you to have an email account to sign up. So anyone on these sites still have email accounts.

But you're right, facebook is just a behemoth. If you can incorporate that into your marketing in a non-obtrusive way, then it can be a huge boost.

Email is not going anywhere. It's too fast, easy, and convenient.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

  • I agree Gary, but the interesting thing to me is how many people don't even check their email anymore unless they are just signing up for something they have to verify. My mother (as the example I used) checks her email rarely, but is on Facebook every day. If I want to send her a message I have to do it on Facebook if I expect her to see it in a timely fashion.

Is there software to automate messaging through Facebook?

That is true, I'm noticing that more and more myself.

There are some good wordpress plugins that automate some of the facebook messaging. Also, aweber will send your messages out through your facebook account if you want them to.

I don't think email will ever die as long as the internet is active. Just like postal mail hasn't died despite the existence of email.

Each medium has it's own specific pros and cons and works well for different purposes.

People will always like the idea of a little extra privacy emailing rather than messaging through social networks.

Plus, with offline clients saving out messages it's fairly crucial for business purposes.

Email isn't dead and won't die, but yes we should all diversify if we want to have maximum reach.

My view is every medium is a way to contact people and get to know them, so go ahead and be everywhere!

    Hi,

I think a lot of people moved away from email because of all the junk and spam. Once the spamers switch to Facebook w emay see a resurgence on Email.

That said, I dont think email will ever go away. Facebook is more social. Email is more professional and if Facebook keeps messing up with their privacy then more and more people will abandon it and go back to email.

    Cheers

Email will continue to exist as a business communications medium for a very long time. It is one of the oldest Internet services, it existed for decades before the Web Browser or World Wide Web was born - I had my first email address in 1989.

I agree that a lot of people will switch to social networks for their personal communications, but I can't see it being used for serious business.

Bottom line - I wouldn't write the eulogy for email just yet, it still has a lot of life in it!

Email is not going to die. It's an essential business communication tool. Can you imagine sending business communications through facebook? Nah, not happening at all.

  • Email is significant in IM, most businesses and organizations are using email as one of their primary contact.

I think email will probably stick around a little bit longer, because a lot of people who are not social media fans still use their email accounts to communicate.

I have a real estate business and get many professional communications now through Facebook. I suspect this will become even more common as more businesses begin maintaining a strong presence on Facebook.

But that's the point, right? If you have 43K emails in your inbox it's like you didn't even get them--you'll never read them or act on them. For you, without some kind of filtering, that inbox is already dead.

I agree. But will that change? I think in the future it's quite possible it will.

Agreed. I will not be abandoning email any time soon, but I will be looking to expand my marketing to many possible channels, hoping that one becomes the "next email."

That is why I connected my twitter and facebook accounts with my youtube account.

I totally agree that marketers have to adapt to the changing of the times. But there are also tools available to make those changes easier.

As a video blogger, I do not want to upload my videos to several different sites. So I just upload the video to youtube, then its sent to my twitter account and facebook.
