Niche, within the niche, within the niche...

There are certainly differing opinions about niche selection for starting a new "business" "campaign" or whatever you chose to call it.

Obviously great marketing combined with good sources of traffic are of Huge importance... However as most truly successful marketers would tell you, research research research is THE most critical part of the equation.

Why? well choose a market that doesn't spend money, are not already desperate for resources you are offering or simply is too tiny and hard to reach will mean all the greatest sales letters or videos and "Bait" fired out there lure them in to bite will be fruitless.

So when considering which markets to target, now we know it is probably the most critical 1st step (not the only critical mind you)
The opinions differ even from within the "Guru" space (some say go larger, others go micro but multiple) and so this is why i throw out the following questions.

A - Do you choose larger markets ie the big 3, Make money , health and relationships. And try to compete within those markets ?

Pros would be.... Large audience and 3 huge internal motivations that drive all of us to find answers and solutions.
Cons would be... Markets being dominated by companies and or marketers who have been in those spaces for more than 5 plus yrs.
They have seasoned websites, they have huge followings and marketplace presence and budgets to match.

B - Do you chose "micro" niches either buried Deep withiing the "Big 3" markets eg health would be "hemmaroid cream" instead of tackling say "lose weight" because of the competition aspect.

Pros of "micros" would be ... Less competition , easier to create a "quick" market presence and obviously less grunt work to get ranked if doing the SEO methods of marketing.

Cons would be ... well just the opposite of a Huge market, it would be a small market and so you would be limited in your ability to "expand" within that market.
An example of this could be say, Iguana care secrets ebook. Hmmm ok well yes it is a niche but what is the ceiling you are putting on your business when you focus so "micro". Lets say you sell an ebook for $27 on caring for Jaws the iguana. Ok maybe that little list of buyers you create you can pitch a sale on tank and heater systems from Amazon. ok sweet now what ?

Now if you were in a "lose weight" market(bigger market) you could do the following
Create a larger list
Cross sell , up sell and inside out sell  products from exercise, to diet to personal development to hypnosis and self belief etc etc

You could focus on just creating great marketing and obviously killer products and leave the SEO to an army of affiliates that you get to do all the selling for you right?

So yes you may be passionate about iguana's and that's great BUT ...

we chose to pursue IM to make money and i just think that doing what you love and doing what Actually makes money are sometimes (not always) 2 very different things and so this brings us back to which general advice floating around out there do you follow when chosing your niches to target.

Do you go into the big markets or chose the hobby sites or maybe a middle ground kind of deal.

How niche within the niche within the niche do you go ?

Hopefully this can provoke some thought but also bring out some of the "big players" who are having great success to post what their thoughts and processes are for chosing markets.

I think this will be beneficial to all who are starting out and still trying to narrow down how to chose a market or better yet , a "Business" to get out of the gates.

Big , Small or obscure what is your poison and why?

For one, you're underestimating the size of niche markets. How many iguana owners are there in the United States? A few dozen or so? More like tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands.

By focusing on a smaller market, you can better tailor your marketing materials to those you're trying to reach. It will cost you less to drive traffic to your Web site, and it will be better targeted traffic as well.

How far down into the niche you want to go can usually be determined by doing keyword research. The keyword "iguana supplies" gets something like 2,500 searches a month. Not the biggest pie, but you could probably do something with that and dominate it pretty easily. What's nice is that it is a "buy" keyword. Anyone searching for "iguana supplies" is looking to buy some iguana gear. If you just targeted the keyword "iguanas" (135,000 monthly searches), you're going to be getting all kinds of people -- including school kids doing reports on iguanas.

I like to think of it in terms of light. The narrower your focus, the easier it is to burn up your subject. Don't be a dim bulb, be a laser!

So do your research, find a niche that has a decent number of searches, dominate that niche as best as you can, then move on to the next niche.

      Thanks for your thoughts Rob,

Just to let you a little more into my thoughts from my research so far

I'm seeing 2 models with info product creation businesses.

      1. Create a niche business by chosing a very targeted niche which you can dominate by creating a content site or "Authority site" This could be a smaller niche like the iguana care niche.

      2. Create niche products that have a larger scope say within
      "Healthcare" like lose weight fast.
Now in this second one maybe you would not create the huge content site like in number 1. as it would take a Heap of work, articles, backlinks, etc etc to get ranked and even then the chances in that huge market are slim right?
More likely you would be using paid traffic to get to your prospects but also you could just target affiliates and JV partners within the same space to sell your products.(assuming you make great products of course)

It seems like if you chose example 1 then you would not have many if any potential JV's or super affiliates to sell your products through because the niche is "sooo targeted"

This would mean you would have to be responsible to market your more targeted niche by yourself and therefore you would lose the leverage of the bigger audience and lists of potential jv's and super affiliates who could bring you more traffic than you could ever get on your own and also with less money and time investment needed for you to get similar results.

So while i do see the benefits of small niches and making a heap of them,

i guess coming from an investment background it just seems like there is more leverage potential in creating products to larger markets that sell like hotcakes so you can team up with JV's and the like to cross promote.
You could sell multiple products within that broader market with that list.

and again you would only be doing that in markets where those guys operate right?

I also see others in here talking about targeting the most popular clickbank products and testing them with some ppc, then eventually all things being equal and knowing you have a winner, creating a similar product but doing better marketing.

again that would be in the "larger" markets though right ?

Well welcome to the world of my OCD overanalytical brain

let me know if i am on the right track or what your thoughts are on those different approaches.

      thanks
