Marketing Tips From A $1300 Per Week Affiliate

First off, I feel a bit guilty for continually taking from this forum and never giving anything back - not even joining. Well, I've joined and this is my "Giving Back" post and I hope there's something in here for everyone.

Secondly, I've been lucky enough to have spent a month in the presence of someone who make's an ABSOLUTE FORTUNE through affiliate marketing (and other online ventures) and he very kindly shared with me exactly how to go about it the right way.

For those interested, I was paired with him at a golf tournament last year and when he told me what he did, I told him id read crap loads of stuff on it here at the WF. After the round, he invited me to his club for a return match and it was then I decided to ask him to coach me.

Now, although I've been "coached" I don't know a great deal more than I did before but I'm in a strong position to tell you that literally anyone can make affiliate marketing work. (I'm interested in affiliate marketing and so that's what we focused on, his affiliate site's alone are bringing in an insane amount of money which got me excited beyond belief!).

Perhaps the biggest thing I took away from my time with him is seeing it all working for myself, with my own eyes. I truly left his place on the last day KNOWING I was going to make money. Most of this belief was born from the confidence I gained through just seeing his methods and sites in action.

The last day I got home, I registered some domains and started building an empire that, to date, has peaked at $7435.93 for the month. Later this year I'm gonna start looking at PPC which will really ramp things up.

Notable things I took away from the coaching -

Choose popular products. This isn't something my coach does, he promotes everything under the sun. Starting out though, you want to promote something that sell's. Phone up your affiliate rep and ask what's doing well, build a relationship with them because you'll be working together a lot. Phone up other sites that are selling the product and ask them how they're getting on. Not all of them will tell you and some might put the phone down, but some give you valuable feedback.

Create Offers. You can't make any money without creating offers and lots of them. My best performing site is a 400 page health site - I've created silos with sections like Acne and Weight Loss and simply created articles around Hundreds of POPULAR products. I now pay a writer to write and upload articles around any new products that come out.

Expand on your best performers. The great thing about having a chuffing great site like my health one is I can see which offers are really performing well. If one is selling, I create a new, more focused site around it and push it hard. There's nothing better than working on something KNOWING it's going to make money and competing with yourself.

Create your own "system". This guy is making a killing because he is extremely quick to enter new markets and get new sites out there. He is quick because he has developed a system that works for him. A system that allows him to throw up a fully promoted, fully functional site in less than a week. Now, im not saying you need do it this quick, I certainly couldn't when I started, but I now have an almost "conveyer belt" style of getting them out and practically all of it is outsourced.

I could literally go on for hours with this post but I think it's probably long enough so i'll wrap it up. If you have any questions, i'll be happy to try and answer them - I might even be able to throw a couple his way if I don't know the answer!

I realize some of you might have problems "joining the dots" so any specific issues, ill do my very best to address :-))

Thanks,

Spence.

Not to be a hater (or perhaps im in that mood) but this is a summary of your post in a few lines.

I've made tons of money, so listen to me as I establish myself on my first post as an expert.
    Tips I give:
    1) Have a system which you follow
    2) Track what you do, so things you are doing well you can multiply.
    3) oh, and pick niches which are already doing well, but be fast.

I guess one tip underlying all this, is the most important, and one which I write about often on my blog and in this forum. That point is the importance of having a mentor.

For that reason alone, having a mentor, Im going to stop hating on you and not ask you to provide some useful actionable tips which are not already mentioned 100 times on this forum.

People, take his advice and get yourself a good mentor. Best investment in your time ever.

      Hi Venturetothetop

      I hear you.

Perhaps the main take away point is directed at newbies. What I stated in my post is basic, but it works. Before I met him, I read the same stuff in this forum over and over again and was nicely surprised to find that he wasnt doing that much differently.

More than giving such simple, "already said 100 times" advice, I opened myself up to anyone struggling. I have experience that should have cost me an absolute fortune, but I got it for free.

    Hi Ryan,

I just want to ask. What kinds of articles do you write for new products
are these review type articles or "how to" articles related to the field?

Also, what's your definition of a fully promoted site?

    Thanks,

      Hi there,

Product reviews work well for me, especially on well designed sites which look nice and authoritive, instantly gaining the visitors trust. I have other sites that just talk more generally (but usually favourably) about offers and they do okay too. I have other sites (like the health one I mentioned) that has just 350 word snippets which talk about what the offer is, what it does and where you can get it.

I concentrate on well written content which covers the topics in a confident, trustworthy manner, thats the most important thing.

I get links from Article directories links (to every page), linkvana, forum posts, yahoo answers, guest posts, blog comments and I get links on sites with high PR. There is nothing different going on in the link building, just try and make everthing look natural and dont go heavy on the main KW - mix it up alot.

My coach had some sites running off TNX and blog networks powered by XRumer, really fun stuff! I wouldnt recommend that though, he can afford to risk them sites for short term gain.

I try to do my link building slowly, but usually end up hitting it hard, which can go either way. I recently launched a site in the health/fitness niche not really sure why with commissions only £3.00 a pop, just had a good feeling. It was ranking for all sorts of brilliant long tail terms and I was making 2-3 sales a day from very very little traffic. As soon as I started getting big links in to increase authority, it vanished! Itll be back in a few months but I should have waited. On the flip side, a different site responded well to such aggressiveness in the early stages.

Also, a site is never really fully promoted, its an on going thing - my bad!

Nice story. We need more meat, please. What exactly do you mean by 'offers'? How do you find popular products? How do you drive traffic?

Right now this looks like a pre-WSO thread. Lots of cliffhangers leading to an ebook.

There is a lot of valuable information in the three paragraphs above - if you look for the techniques and advice rather than looking for a specific "how to do this and this and this".

        Kay,

I agree 100%. Truth is, there's loads of different techniques to go about the three point's you pointed out. The more you try and test yourself, the more you can build on your successes.

I phone round the affiliate reps asking them whats converting, why its converting, what type of traffic will I need (apparently PPC traffic is a different animal than SEO traffic, im yet to test), which offers are in the pipeline? etc. For example, I phoned my affiliate guy and asked about any upcoming products that were tipped to do well. He told me about this new health supplement and gave me a link to the site which was still on the web developers testing server - it wasnt even live. When I checked out the sales page, it was agreed that it would do well so I snapped up some sweet domains and got a head start on most affiliates.

I've also put myself out there on some networking sites and made some lifelong friends, we share research info all the time.

The offer is just whatever you decide to promote, whether its a digital product, a weight loss pill or an email submit.

I guess I can see how you think this will lead to a WSO, however I could get a much better return for my time working on my business than trying to sell a $7 e-book with no reputation.

What do you mean by create and promote offers? How do you create offers for affiliate products whose price points and shipping are beyond your control?

I run a webstore for my own self manufactured products that does about $1000 dollars a month. I am interested in leveraging this experience into new affiliate stores for Amazon and Commission Junction products, however, the hardest part I find is creating a retail experience around products that are in the end, hosted and controlled somewhere else.

    Thanks for the great post.

    Hey John,

That's exactly what he did, eventually.

He was very protective of them at first and reluctant to let me see them, as anyone would be. In the end he found it much easier to explain things if he just showed me. I didnt see all his sites though, no where near.

The best part of this was seeing his traffic stats. On these sites he had GA, most others he used Sitecore (I think its called). One site was hovering around the 200 visitors a day mark, one had somewhere close to 1200 - id never seen this before!! These are targetted visitors too, coming naturally from the search engines.

Hi Ryan - thanks for the great information. I'm new to affiliate marketing and I'm about to make the plunge and buy my first domain!

Just one question though... how long do you make your pages? I've read that if they're not long enough, they won't get indexed properly (or something like that). I think one guy wrote his pages and they were averaging at around 300 words each, but he said they weren't getting picked up fast enough.

I just want to make sure I get it right before I start! Obviously, I will learn things along the way, but it's great having someone on here to ask too!

      Julie
