Can anyone recommend an effective download program to remove viruses? I apparently picked up something called sysinternals and my Spyware Doctor is not removing it. Help please! Linda Kate

  • I believe Trend Micro has an onlilne virus scanner called Housecall, and it's free. Otherwise, I'd recommend AVG (AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Virus Protection | Home and Business)
  • AH!!!!!!!
I always end up reformatting. I can never fully trust a virus scan to remove a virus. That's just me. But there is really good software out there. I recommend Home Computer Security - Kaspersky Lab United States
  • You may want to try Malwarebytes. It helped me to remove a bunch of malicious spywares that even "mainstream" anti-spyware software weren't able to detect.

    • Go to free.grisoft.com
      get avg
look on there site for vcleaner and also look up the bug you think you have.
Reboot into safemode. Either pound F8 or crash it in the first 2-3 seconds of the windows startup screen by pulling the power.
In safemode run the scrubber and then the scanner to remove the payload.
If it didn;t kludge your windowz then your good to go. You'll know if your good to go if your computer reboots.
  • I use AVG (the free version), AdAware, MalwareBytes and Trend Micro. Regularly. It's just kind of one of the hazards of the job that you're going to come into contact with malware and spyware so I just do regular scans with all of the above and that helps keep things running smoothly. Most of the time.

(Watch: now that I've posted this I'll get him with some monster computer issue that nobody has ever seen before!)

    Hope that Helps,
    Good Luck!

    • Sysinternals is one of those tricky new bits of malware that can interfere with your ability to run conventional antivirus tools. There are some detailed and specific instructions for removing sysinternals here: Remove Sysinternals Antivirus (Uninstall Guide)

  • I use AVG free. Keep it updated. Scan once a day. I haven't had any problems so far other that it can slow my system down during start up and scanning.
  • It happened to me about a week or so ago, and I went to Google and did a search for the name of the virus that kept attacking me and I found a forum that had instructions for getting rid of the one attacking my computer as well as all of the latest viruses.

In my case, the virus which was called antivirus soft would take over as soon as I signed on! So I had to use another computer to troubleshoot. Using their instructions, I was able to kill the process long enough to run malwarebytes, which got rid of it permanently.

Needless to say, this forum was very helpful! Here is the link:

  • I use www.bitdefender.com and it is pretty good
  • I use Avast, pretty good. further more, I use Opera as browser. It is less popular, but I guess it is less popular to be targeted by virus too.

  • If your computer has been infected with a virus, particularly any of the latest, "Backdoor Trojan / Rootkits" none of the standard virus software applications will work alone. In some cases, running them only worsens the problem/issues/symptoms because the Root Kits are programmed to morph into destruct computer mode when they detect certain activities such as:

    ctrl - alt -del
    Control panel access
    Restore Point access
    Virus scans access
    User attempts to access browser
User attempts to searching using Google

The latest Root kits are specifically designed to disable:

    Windows Restore Point (completely)
Virus scans from completing a full run
Installation of new virus scan software applications

These Root Kits are also designed to stealthy camouflage the offending .exe files (key loggers, and other executables they have installed on your computer) and to permanently redirect your browsers.

That being said, if you want to avoid reformatting your hard drive, go to: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum There is no charge for the service.

You will need to create a profile which includes your OS and service packs and then start a thread advising the analyst of your symptoms and problems and any other pertinent information. Thoroughly read the instructions they provide and follow them to the letter.

After your machine is clean, install Comodo Anti Virus, Comodo Time Machine, SpyBot and Malwarebytes.

All of the above programs have free versions.

The Comodo Time machine is one of the few restore points applications on the market that cannot be defeated by the stealthy destructive Root Kits. And as far as Comodo goes, once you install it and learn how it protects your machine, you'll never have a problem with viruses, malware or Trojans again.

    • There is a program I've used before called "SD Fix".....

Being the "computer nerd" amongst my friends and relatives, I'm always asked to fix the nasty viruses they somehow end up getting.

SD Fix does a number even on some of those nasty trojans that other programs struggle with.

My brother's computer once had a virus that would block any type of anti-virus software from running and if you tried to download or even search for an anti-virus software, it would block the internet browser from connecting to the internet or sometimes just shut down the computer.

Running SD Fix in Safe Mode like the instructions tell you has worked every time I've needed it to.

After you run it, then run MalwareBytes to get rid of anything else left hanging around. That's my advice.

  • That's because it's not a virus...it's a utility suite by Microsoft.

Windows Sysinternals: Documentation, downloads and additional resources

Where did you get the info from that this is a virus?
  • get hold of a copy of

    1) panda antivirus - its cloud based so you dont need to get updates
    2) malwarebytes - anti spyware/addon software

i have found that running two or three anti virus' is the best way to keep the pc free of niggles

  • sometimes typing the symptons (problems the virus is causing in your PC) in google will give you the right solution

    Hope it helps

  • security essentials by microsoft. totally awesome!
  • Many people are recommending virus protection programs. If the virus severe you will probably have to wipe your computer clean before it takes over completely. Contact a computer repair shop and get a estimate. It usually is $100.
  • Hello,
