Help Re: Pinging, RSS and Bookmarking

Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me with the concepts of Pinging, RSS and Bookmarking.

I'm getting going on article marketing and want to make sure I've got it straight:

Pinging - I can just go to pingler and submit my url to be pinged. Alternatively get a premium account.. but
WHAT exactly does pinging do for me? just get google to notice and index the page?

Bookmarking - now is this really as simple as using a browser to "Bookmark this page"? Again - what is the purpose? so I remember the URL? or does google do something with this information?

RSS - I have read a lot of people 'submitting to RSS directories' and I'm confused - I know I can offer a feed from my site (which then any user can subscribe) but it seems I can 'submit' my url to other RSS feeds - like in a way I'm pushing that page out to people. Is this right? where is an example of this place I can submit to a feed?

Ok and well I'm at it - I may as well ask - what are some other good places to visit / software to use / techniques to get my articles "out there".

I hope this thread helps other warriors too!

Thanks Warriors!!

Pinging informs the spiders from various sources (at least when using sites like pingler and pingomatic) that your site has new content for them to crawl. So yeah, on a basic level it gets google to notice your new site or content.

Bookmarking should really be understood as social bookmarking. It is similar to bookmarking sites you like in your browser, but in stead you are using third party sites to show them to the public. There are many third party sites (digg, stumbleupon, mister-wong, just to name a few) that allow you to bookmark sites/pages you like for others to see as well. Many of the popular ones are crawled very often and deep so if you get your links on there it is likely to help you get indexed faster. These have pretty low value for anything other than getting noticed as most are nofollow links, but there are some that are somewhat helpful to an overall SEO campaign.

RSS directories help because people often go looking for content relevant to their interests so if you add your rss feed to these directories you can potentially get more subscribers. RSS feed Directory - Feedage.com is an example of an rss directory. These feeds are often picked up by people syndicating content on their sites too which could in turn get you more backlinks.

    Hope it helps.

I have a question related to this thread:

Are RSS feeds only useful and appropriate if you have a content-rich site as opposed to a product-based niche site (i.e., Amazon affiliate)?

And what if you aren't trying to get subscribers?

I've never used RSS; it's always sounded kind of intimidating. Just wondering if it's something I should be doing.

It's like this, you have a website and you bookmarked it, you'll gain a backlink and lots of visitors that like the topic. You submitted it to RSS directories, RSS sites will crawl your initial pages. You pinged it, ping sites will check your updates, RSS sites will check if you have new posts. Search engines will crawl your new pages or new site. Everytime you pinged it, web 2.0 sites will be updated and so search engines too. It's the reason why many of us uses ping sites in our wordpress sites to automatically ping new posts. It is so alarming to these sites if you use autoblogs with several posts in a matter of seconds that is why most of the autoblogs uses time in between posts. When many of us uses the same content at the same site then most probably most sites will be banned or deindexed nowadays.

What about the subscriber thingy? Of course, your list will not be growing..it's important for at least get a sale or getting them in your list. Don't let them go away without getting from them something unless you're a genius getting huge traffic easily and not bothered about people who don't buy from you.

Ooops, I think I am now too far explaining things but maybe you'll learn something..have a nice day!

Well, actually, in my question I was trying to clarify that RSS feeds are appropriate for any kind of web content the same way Ping services are.

I'm surmising from the discussion that, yes, they are.
