What to charge in this directory?

I am going to make a directory of one of my websites with Tavern in the
url. It is a domain name I tried to sell and that did not happen. It is
currently at #2 for it's main city tavern keyword in the local listings.

So the searches in this town for Taverns is about 1,000
and Bars around 2,900 according to Google.

I don't know how much to charge per month. For featured listings
with 100 words of advertising, address and url, how does $39.95 or
$49.95 sound? They can also have one other link back to their site.

And listings with just the business name, address and phone number
for $19.95.

And then someone mentioned display listings, which could go for
more than the featured listings...

I was also thinking of having a few banners of my own down one side.
Affiliate and CPA. Any comments on that?

Let me know what you think, please. Thanks.

That sounds good, but to some extent depends on the rates in your areas.

Have you checked the cost of listings in your local yellow pages, the newspaper, the free ads, and the like?

If you're also doing something to market the site, including making it a community resource with articles about the businesses, interviews and other such things, then I would price it less than the yellow pages, but make it competitive.

I would also have a menu of choices for what they can buy (like the display ads) which is what the yellow pages do.

I would also consider picking one or two businesses to get a free test in order to get testimonials. Or you could do a 2 week trial to get businesses to come on board.

But I would definitely start with looking at the rates in my area first and seeing what the businesses get for that price and then seeing where mine fit in.

Thanks for your suggestion. I had not thought about checking local offline listings, somehow.

I have just changed the site over from another design to the directory and put up about 20 listings so that it does not look bare bones. This will give some of the businesses a few leads before I contact them about paid listings.

The site is at #2 in Google, but I would still do some marketing for it of course.

      Thanks. Your suggestions were helpful.

Thanks Christopher. That was great information you shared. Although my site won't be as big, and the town won't probably send that much traffic, it really gave me a good example and the additional suggestions were helpful as well.
