Bringing REAL Value to a Niche (LONG)

Hey Everyone!

My brain has been on fire here for the last few weeks. I've been brainstorming sub-niches, topics, products, etc. WHILE learning Wordpress and a bunch of other things. This weekend I'm at a 10 hour per day seminar by one of the legends in my niche and I was up at 4am to do a little work here before I leave for the seminar. But I digress...

Here is what I'd REALLY appreciate some help with. I'm determined to put REAL value out into my niche. Yes, I want to sell products and I want to get SEO, but I want to really add something to the niche. My community is VERY tightly knit and it's really important to me that I do something real and build a real reputation.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the guys at the TOP of my field, I'm probably a 6-7 in knowledge. Maybe a little higher in some places and lower in others. I find that when I talk to average people in my niche online or at seminars I know a lot more than they do and can pinpoint their problems pretty quickly and recommend several perfectly appropriate resources that can get them on track.

What I would like to do on my site is pull information together and summarize the TON of stuff that's out there. There is a lot of conflicting information and different opinions and confusion. I'm not an expert (yet) but I am very well connected and very plugged in to the community and the knowledge base.

I feel my true value is:

1) Knowing WHERE the information is, understanding it and having a voracious appetite for finding it and understanding it

2) Being able to see the bigger picture and integrate conflicting ideas and make sense of things in a higher level way.

For example: Expert A says to do this and Expert B says to do that. "What should I do?" My response: "Actually, they're saying similar things in different ways. An approach that's worked for me is to take this from A and combine it with that from B and add in this from Expert C and put it together like this. Here are 3 resources I used to understand the topic better..."

It's a little wordy and corporate sounding, but this is what I came up with as an initial value proposition for my niche.

My sincere question is: "Is this REAL VALUE that will draw others to my site and what I'm doing?"

All feedback is appreciated and welcomed!

"There is a fantastic body of knowledge in [niche]. There have been a large number of great, foundational works over the years. The internet not only increased this body of knowledge exponentially, it lowered the barrier to entry for those with something to say on the topic.

21st Century [niche] phenomena like [brand] and [sub-niche] would not have caught on and taken off like they did without the internet and the social web. And [sub-niche] and [knowledge area] wouldn’t have spread in popularity and practice if the internet hadn’t encouraged the intersection of [these] communities.

It’s a very exciting time for anyone who loves [niche]. There are incredible opportunities for learning and sharing. Boundaries are giving way and different disciplines are learning from each other, combining and evolving. [mydomain].com was created to build on these trends – not by creating more information – by collecting, disseminating, and commenting on the wonderful body of knowledge that is here now and continues to grow.

[mydomain].com is dedicated to bringing real value to the [niche] communities by connecting it to helpful, revolutionary and evolutionary information throughout the internet, blogosphere and printed media. Although it’s probably impossible to be completely unbiased, this site is committed to leaving out the fragmented, political, us-against-them attitudes that pervade the [niche] world. If something has value you’ll find it here along with the source it came from."

That's my first shot at a mission statement/value proposition.

Thanks for the help!

Adam

    All great stuff, Marc. Thanks!

Uncovering the passion HAS been the major journey for me as well...

This has really been my struggle and has kept me up many nights. How can I bring REAL value that people will actually want to exchange money for?

So, what I'm getting from your comments is that you think the value I'm bringing is solid but the communication of that value and why others need it needs some work?

    Thanks again,

    Adam

    1. Going for real value is the right long-term strategy, IMO. People will eventually come to you because of the quality of your content and because of your reputation.

    2. To reel people in and to keep them engaged, make sure you don't over-complicate things. In general, people tend to respond best to "quick fixes" and instant gratification. I know, the world is more complicated than that, but at least for your marketing messages, try to simplify things and boil them down to "hot tips".

Actually, I have something in the works that you might want to try out in your marketing process. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you some more details.

      Thanks, Shane! I'll PM you.

REMEMBER guys, I'm not actually going to use that value prop publicly, I'm just trying to get a feel for if you think the CONCEPT of what I'm doing is going to be of value!

      Thanks again!

  • Hi Adam,

Thought you'd might like the view of a complete newbie...

I appreciate the niche you're going for is very tightly knitted but I personally (and it could just be me!) am put off by "corporate" statements like yours above. I wasn't put off by it, and I read it all the way through since I found what you were including was interesting, but unless that came from someone at the VERY top of their game I would be dubious and sceptical.

My point could be flawed since you've said you're well established in the community and those in the same situation as me, but in your community, might not be as put off.

Anyway, thought I'd give ya my two pennies (or cents!)

      Thanks for the feedback, Chris!

I guess I'll have to get back to work on my statement. Again, I'm NOT posting it on my site, it's more an INTERNAL compass for the direction of the business.

In other words, that's what I'm going to do. Is that of value?

  • I'd say definitely...It's so easy to get wrapped up in lots of overlapping advice from experts. Like you say, they're prob both/all right but I would certainly look for anything out there that would summarise their opinions.

Would be nice to follow your success with this
