Best strategy for releasing a new e-book product?

I'm working on a product (e-book) in the Affiliate Marketing niche - i suppose it could be compared to something like Jonathan Volk's latest Facebook PPC guide.

It will be a high quality product with a lot of valuable info, so it isn't really something I want to just give away.

However, I'm having a hard time deciding how to go about promoting/releasing it. Guy's like Volk have a built-in customer base...he has a list, he has a well known blog, he has a reputation. This alone will sell his product for him.

I, on the other hand, have none of that. Therefore, I need to get the word out about my product. So, I've come up with a few scenarios that may/may not work:

A) Give away a few copies of the e-book in exchange for some testimonials; use them to build hype for the official release of the product.

or

B) Sell the e-book for a limited time at a reduced price...then bump it up to full price.

or

C) Make a condensed version and give it away using a squeeze page to built a list. Then try to sell the full version to the list and release it to the public.

I've never done this before and I want to do it right the first time. I know it will be rather difficult since I'm not a "guru" but hopefully the product speaks for itself.

I've started doing what I call a Teaser Version. This is where I show somebody all the bookmarks, Table of Contents and the first chapter. One big reason for somebody not buying is that they don't know exactly what they are getting.

If you give them a Teaser Version, they can see what the ebook looks like and they can see what contents the ebook has. They are then more likely to purchase your ebook.

I also like the 'teaser' approach. But in addition I would offer, say, 10 copies on this forum in exchange for a testimonial - and follow-up on all the people who who get the free copy so you do get 10 testimonials.

Do a Press Release - lots of free Press Release Sites on Google.

Look for JV forums - there are a few you can join for free and ask people to promote your ebook. You'll need an affiliate program set up for this.Clickbank seems like the easiest and you can then list it in ClickBank Marketplace.

    Hope this helps

I've been a fan of the "teaser" or preview approach for years. It's what got me hooked on reading fiction ebooks back when ereader.com was peanut press, and it gets me all the time with Kindle books now too. As an author/publisher, it really helps with my Kindle book sales, and it has boosted sales of PDF books too.

Good advice that what I did with my product, as a matter of fact I have just started a thread for my product on the "Classified Ads" forum, here on the warrior forum, and the link goes to an affiliates page I created offering tolls to promote it, plus there is an opt in box on nthere for an "affiliates list that I am building for all future promotions!

If you go to my sales page in the bio scroll down you will see a link to my affiliates page, go check out what I mean, its great to grow an army of reliable affiliates, so next time you may have that list to promote to!

If it were me, I'd probably go all three routes. I'd certainly want some good testemonials to use on the sales page plus I'd like some critical reviews before launch to make any last minute changes. I'd probably make a post in the War Room offering the book free to the first 10(20, 25?) respondents. I'd also include in the post that any feedback/testemonials would be appreciated and that you will link to the peson's site if the testemonial is used.

Next, I'd go with option C. Start to create a list before launch. Hype your product and give people a sample of what else they can expect. Follow up with regular emails through launch and beyond.

Then I'd go to Option B and do a WSO. Offer X Warriors the opportunity to purchase your book at $Y before it goes up to $Z. You might even find some JV partners.

Press releases are good places to promote because these also are highly recognized by the search engines. As for the choices you've provided, I would go for the second one. That has worked for me as well to give my readers little excitement.

I would say 'word-of-mouth' is still by far the best marketing method there is. Now, the trick here is HOW to get that effect? Like what Verdi mentioned, letting 10 copies out in exchange for genuine testimonials will certainly add value to your product. Once you get the testimonials, next is of course to tap on Social Media traffic. It's free, and it's effective.

Lastly, you can also use 'Press Releases' method to get back traffic to your site. However you need to be very good with your writing.

My personal preference? Social Media Marketing, Viral video marketing, Blog commenting, forum posting. Works all the time.

      Hey fadhlibiz,

I am in the process of marketing my product, and I am very interested in viral video marketing, How do you personally use this to best effect?

I created a promo video, for around $3 at Animoto.com, then joined tubemogul.com, so I had a video hub service to 4 top video marketing sites, You Tube, Metacafe, Yahoo video, and Daily Motion, but I have always wanted to improve on this form of marketing, and it sounds like you have a successful formula to this?

Use all three, who says you have to stick only to the one. You may also consider setting up affiliate program to your product to increase the sales...

It's also usual to have a well established blog or a website before launching anything, just for the fact that you need someone to buy it...

You actually have a nice game plan right there. But I'll do the plan A and C the most. You need testimonials to build credibility since you are just starting out yet, and no one knows about your product. When people sees the testimonials, it gives them some confidence about your ebook. Regarding your plan C, build your list as fast as you can. That should be your number priority online before anything else. So, in the future if you want to launch another product, you can just email your subscribers to check out your brand new product, and you can also tell them to promote your product in exchange of the commissions.

1.The best options I would recommend is either giving away a few copies to build up a list and get testimonials.
    2. Sell it as a WSO at a reduced price
    3. Start to build a list, maybe giving away a technique as the bribe then offering the product as a backend product...

If done correctly all can work to your advantage!

I would Create a lite edition(teaser) and give it away.

It would be smart to get on some JV giveaways,
      mattwolfs blog has updated giveaways

also do adswaps and send everybody to the
landing page to download the lite edition.

Then you can market the book to your list
also you will be growing your list in the IM niche

so you can market other products aswell

oh and if you do your keyword research.
and it is something people are searching for
create a good page with good onpage seo
and hire a company, like mine, to get you on front-page of google for that keyword.

      good luck.

some ideas for keyword since im feeling genourous are facebook marketing, facebook ppc, social media marketing.... you get the idea. good luck once again

Agreed on the teaser. Try creating a smaller more condensed version of it. Give it away for free but make sure you capture emails before the person downloads. Then at the end of the teaser version, try and convince the reader to visit your site to buy the whole edition.

Do some press releases. Also offer few free pages to read from your ebook that creates some curiousity. I do not get impressed from the reviews. because, a lot of people can use fake reviews. So, if you want to have a great launch and want to get good sales then should build some curiosity.

I was recently in the same situation and here's what worked for our product:

    1) You're idea to give away copies for testimonials is a good one. If you can get video testimonials all the better. Have your testimonials above the fold if in video format, strewn throughout the website if written. Definitely put a few testimonials right below the "send payment" button.

    2) As you mentioned, drive traffic through well written articles to a squeeze page where you can catch emails. You can give away "10 secret tips" from your ebook (but of course don't mention that the information will be repeated once they buy!) It may be best to make a video of you talking about why they need this FREE product, and what they'll get out of it. A web cam is sufficient. Just have some music in the background and edit in fast cuts to keep their attention. Video converts way more than simple text on squeeze pages. One of our squeeze pages converts at about 40% because of a well edited video (you should start doing this yesterday!)

    3) Most importantly, you need traffic. So make your funnel good and wide with tons of feeder sites, good key words, and a slick sales pitch.

With any luck you'll be selling right off the bat. BTW, if you need a testimonial I'd be interested in writing or taping one. Just let me know. Best of luck!

You must have come out with a great ebook ! You rock !
Try all marketing strategies that you mentioned, and do relevant tracking on your product website. You can either try one strategy at a time to trace if it works for a couple of weeks. But I suggest you try all at the same time, to cut short the time of getting your ebook sold.

    ALl the best !

    Hey,

I have my product on Clickbank, I personally think that is a contributing factor however, I also think its a numbers game!

If you can get yourself well established on Clickbank with quite a few products and sales of a high quality, you get trusted on your information more, therefore attracting even more affiliates, sales, which of course raises the bar on your business reputation, and of course 'gravity', on your products CV!

    Hi,

    Here's what I usually do:

    Focus On Affilliates

They will do all the things mentioned in this thread for a cut of the sales. Build a great affilliate area, give them promotional materials, keywords, PPC ads, squeeze pages, everything you can to make it easy for them to send you traffic.

Affilliates can reach places on the Internet you never even know existed.

Bottom line, if you can recruit an army of affilliates, they will send you all the traffic you need.

      Hey Sam,

Totally agree, at the end of the day by recruiting an army of affiliates, you basicilly are outsourcing your traffic generation in most cases for free, via Clickbank, paydotcom, etc....

I recently paid $20 on this forum to start a thread promoting my affiliates page, and I have recuited 3 affiliates to the list, it doesn`t sound a lot but the threads not going any where soon!

On social media sites can build a list, I am going to expierment in someway using an opt in to my affiliates list, but the point is as you say get that team of affiliate doing most of your promoting for you on each product while you grow your lists and new products lines as the army of affiliates grow so does your business!

The benefit of NOT being a Guru is you have no reputation and thus very little to loose if you do anything less than reputation worthy What I mean is go with any method that you feel might work. Don´t get hung up on "do it right the first time".

You don´t mention what kind of release you had in mind nor what your budget is (big releases cost money) so I am assuming you refer to just letting your product out on the market as opposed to a risk investment of creating a bombastic multi JV operation (which are not always successful). Thus, if one must choose, I would go with C since it does multiple things for you. Give it some time and build your list which you a single optionmay profit from even if your current product flops.

This is what makes this forum so great. It's like having your own personal consulting team.

I do agree that if it's your first product it's not so important to get everything right as it is to just get it out there. You'll learn more from the process of just doing it than you will be over obsessing about getting every detail of the launch right.

While all of the suggestions have been great the experience of actually doing it will ultimately tell you what works and what doesn't. Take the methods you have and run with them. Maybe the next time you'll want to refine your approach based on your experience.

Check out Jeff Walker's Product Launch Blueprint (not an affiliate link). He makes the excellent point that if you use the umbrella approach with multiple paths to success you can screw up 80% of a launch and still come out okay.
