Paypal and moving to another country.

Hi,
I have been using paypal for a long time now.
Now, I will be moving to Pakistan for about 3 to 4 months and want to use it there also.

My question is " What do you guys do when you have to access paypal in a different country?"

Is it a hassle or is it easy?
Can my account get freezed?

What should I do? Is there any procedure to follow?

  • I had a hard time changing my address when I moved down the street, they unverified my account and froze my money.

    It is taken care of now but it was a big hassle, you should try calling them first, and maybe take all of your money out before you change the address.

    anyone else have this problem?
  • well, actually I am not exactly changing my address.
    I will be there for only 3 to 4 months.

    will it still be a hassle?

    could I mail them instead of calling? I am from India and calling them would be too costly.

    • I won't bother changing for such a short period of time. I have just opened a 2nd paypal account in a differnet country but I am here for at least another year. You really need to have a bank account in the new country before its worth adding the paypal a/c - you can presuambly still access your paypal account from the new place and use internet banking to access your bank a/c so ithink its a lot of trouble to change over

    I had asked this question , because I had read about paypal account being frozen, but I am not sure about the reason.
  • How would paypal know that youve moved countries :and why would it matter unless you are closing your linked bank a/c I really don't see the problem

    • Paypal would know about it because I would be accessing their account from another country.
      And I dont even have a bank account linked with paypal.

      So, do you mean that my fears are baseless and I am actually safe from my account being frozen?
  • I truely can't see any requirement to remain the same country to access your paypal account. That would be bizarre! I have been using my NZ account almost exclusively from Australia for the last 18 months with no problem.
  • I wouldn't change the account if there's any way to avoid it. I really don't think you will need to. Instead, you should withdraw everything but a small amount before leaving and keep withdrawing frequently so you don't tie up a a large amount if you get frozen (although that shouldn't happen).

    I was living in the U.K. and had my paypal account there. I went to Spain for a couple months and was able to keep operating my U.K account with no problem.

    Then I went to the U.S. for a few months, opened a U.S. paypal account and tried to transfer a fairly large amount from my U.K. account. They froze the U.K. account. I was freaking out but I soon calmed down. I just went through the steps they asked me to do and got my money fairly quickly. Even if you get an account frozen it's a precaution and they are not going to keep your money if you're legit.

    They do sometimes freeze accounts if they are accessed from another country especially if it is one they do not support. My cousin had his frozen 'cos he was accessing it from the US while his fiance was accessing it from Pakistan. They activated the account once he explained the situation. In his case it was most probably because the account was being accessed from two countries in a short time span.

    In your case, I would say just login and access your account from Pakistan. Do not change your address as Pakistan is not supported by PayPal and that will get your account frozen.

    If there is any issue, just give them a call and let them know you are traveling.

    • The other thing to do is make sure you have skype. You can buy a telephone number to run on skype and use that as your contact phone number on PayPal. If you do need to telephone then use skype as it costs cents to do.

      When I moved to China, it wasn't a country that was supported by PayPal, but it wasn't a problem. In answer to Lissie's question, they can tell which country you are in by the IP. Some people would say use a proxy but it really wasn't any problems.

      My account got frozen like everybody else's in the UK when you hit £4,000 in income. It doesn't matter if that is done in one day or 10 years, they have to freeze it to prove your identity. European law. All you need to do is send them certain information, and that is then sorted.

  • Oh, well then maybe I should just relax and hope everything will work out fine.

    I was just worried because I am subscribed to a few membership sites where I am charged monthly. If somehow my account gets frozen, all these memberships will be cancelled, which will be scary.

    Do you think sending an email to paypal would be good enough or do you think it could backfire. I mean, suppose my mail reminds them to freeze my account. I know, it sounds funny, but they could do that.
  • I would recommend just using a proxy that is based in your home country when accessing your PayPal account. Ever since I had my account frozen that is what I do when I traveling.

    I wont have my computer there. Could be using cybercafe or my friends computer.
  • Thanks for your advance. You can use your active Paypal account from any where of the of the world to get & send payment in the Paypal to Paypal. In this case you must use the same features as your verified country.

    If you would like to go Pakistan & you want to use the Pakistani Bank account, in this case you may not found the same features of the Paypal. Due to International Money Laundering law, the Paypal made various features for various country. Thanks
  • Paypal is worldwide and accessible anywhere in the planet as long as there is an internet connection. You can do the usual Paypal to Paypal transaction, you can also be able to withdraw money but of course it'll go straight into your registered bank account in which case you must do online banking or money transfer to actually get the money into your hands. It's better if you have the Paypal Access Card (Business) as you can use it anywhere though it incurs a small fee if used abroad. :-)
