Raising Cash For Charity?

I don't how I got embroiled in this but I've been "volunteered"
to help raise cash for an Asthma charity.

So, the project is to have a Wordpress content syndication
plugin created and sell it to as many bloggers as possible
between now and 19th July. All the proceeds going to the
charity.

What I need to know...

1. Who are the most influencial bloggers? People who would
be willing to spread the word to help raise cash for charity.

2. Would you as an affiliate be willing to do a promotion for
zero cash... knowing that 100% of the profits were going to
a charity?

3. Do you have any suggestions or ideas for getting as many
people on board as possible?

4. Would you be willing to offer a blogging related bonus that
could be added to the charity one time offer package.

Thanks

John

    Hi John,

    1. I'm not sure.

    2. Absolutely, yes!

    3. Not offhand.

    4. If I can think of anything, I would be more than happy to contribute. Maybe writing a few custom blog posts, if nothing else.

Best of luck on the project!

    Hi John

It should be really simple raising money for charities but it's actually a lot harder than one would think! I think it's because there are so many charities and so many people doing things for charities, i.e. sponsored run, sponsored walks, etc. It also (and shameful I know, but is true) depends on the charity. Children's charities/cancer tend to raise more of a profile because of their nature etc.

Anyway, let's focus on the positive.

There are many marketing activities you can do:

First of all, you need to create a "wish list" of people you would like to help you promote it. Ideally people who have a large leadership within their blogs. An easy way to do this is to check out how many comments they have. Generally the higher volumne of comments can often mean they are generating a lot of traffic to their sites, which is what you want.

You then need to contact these people, either directly or by asking if anyone knows them and getting an introduction.

I would really recommend also leveraging Twitter and Facebook. I'd be happy to post a few links for you to my Twitter followers (I have over 43,000, so would reach a fair few).

You need to make sure you're monitoring everything so you can see where your results are coming from, track everything etc.

Wishing you the very best of luck, I hope you raise lots of cash for them!

Feel free to PM me their link to post to Twitter.

I actually run a fundraising business for charity organizations myself (in my sig).

I have a lot of articles online about different fundraising methods all pointing to one of my blogs. The traffic isn't huge, but I would be more than happy to write a post on my blog about your efforts.

    Just let me know!

1a. Mom bloggers who are also internet marketers: Alice Seba, Lynn Terry, Nicole Dean, Melissa Ingold, Jackie Lee, Amy Bass...to name just a few off the top of my head who are also WF members.

    2. Sure!

    3. I'd be happy to write up an online press release and post it on PRLog.org, as well as email it to a list (I can compile one) of Mom bloggers and 'asthma bloggers'. Anyone who wants to help me contact people on the list is welcome to volunteer to help me

I think Kevin Riley deserves to be a part of this worthwhile event.

      How about it Kevin?

The plugin is being written by Andy Fletcher, a mate of mine in the UK and it sounds very cool. Does some powerful content syndication and traffic generation - details coming soon is what I hear.

And it for a really good cause.

    John,
not much on blogging but am willing to help out any way I can - many members of my family suffer from Asthma so I know what they go through. If there's an email where I can send a bit of $$ let me know. I 'force' my kids to donate part of their allowance each month so they can get in the habit of that instead of spending it all on themselves so I'm not talking about Trump sized donations but figure every bit helps.

Also, I have MRR rights to a WP membership plugin I can offer as a bonus - just pm with the details or give me a shout on skype.

    Thanks for helping out!
    best,
    --Jack

John, good to see you doing something like this. I have been giving some thought to setting up a charity via means of internet marketing by applying certain tactics. This is for a little down the road though.

Once you're ready to roll with this I'd be happy to mail my list. I think that other marketers coming on board and mailing their lists when the time comes would be a great way to drive the traffic that you need.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your kind offers of support. I think it's time for me to provide a little bit of back story to how this all came about.

A few days ago I was sat in a beer garden, enjoying a cold pint with my old man, when we were approached by a slightly crazy looking guy with a charity bucket. He wandered around the whole beer garden and must have been lucky if he collected a couple of quid. This got us talking about charity workers and their lack of economic sense...

Why do so many people raise money for charity at less than minimum wage, when they could just get a job and donate what they earn?

Unfortunately for me, the conversation didn't stop there and I foolishly (ok, drunkenly) proclaimed about how much better I could do.

"Prove it", was my Dad's response.

To cut a long story short, I now have a bet going with him. That I can't raise $10,000 for Asthma Research (my Dad's an asthma sufferer so it seemed appropriate) by 19th July 2010 (1 month).

I figured what better place to start than twisting the arm of a highly respected Warrior Forum member to help me spread the word...

Unfortunately, the best I could find on short notice was John Taylor.

So thank you again, I really appreciate the community spirit for what really is a great cause.

    Cheers,

    Andy

We're talking to the charity's fund raising co-ordinator on
Monday to see if we can organize direct payments to them.

That way we avoid extra processing fees, more cash will get
to the charity and the payment will be transaparent.

Thanks for all the offers of help so far. John and I have had lots of questions about how people can help so in an attempt to answer it one more time rather than to everyone who PM's/Skype's us ...

Donate - OK, ok we won't have a donate button until tomorrow but it still remains number one regardless!

Donate a product - If you've got something that will complement a Wordpress plugin targeted at bloggers who want to syndicate their content and generally raise their profile and you are happy for it to be sold at a massive discount to over 1,000 people let us know so we can include it in the OTO bundle.

Agree to run a promotion to the charity page - Whether your list is 2 or 2 million people, sending that traffic to the offer page between 5th and 19th July would be massively appreciated.

Sign up to beta test the plugin - The plugin will be in beta 28th June to 5th of July, the more the merrier (but a pox on anyone that sees this as a free way to get a plugin that is being sold for charity!!!!)

Digg/Stumble/Web2.0ify us - Check out DogScout's post above and help raise awareness.

Tell us what we're forgetting - We don't have all the answers and we don't pretend to so if you think we're missing a trick then let us know.

      Press releases

if someone writes one, I'll release it on a paid PR site. (and pay to have it near the top... (but I doubt I will over bid Willie Crawford. Lol). Using the words 'public service' in the PR almost guarantees it a Google page 1 position. As well as the page(s) it links to.

There are also hundreds of free PR sites. Again using 'Public Service' in the body seems to over ride even the fact the PR service is a less than a premium one.

If an article witer wants to write a few articles on asthma and make a resource box linking to the site, That would bring traffic, especially if it were good writers with a reputation at various article directories?

The only problem I can see here is that some people will always have that small shadow of doubt that you are giving all the money to charity. Especially if people don't know you or haven't heard from you. So for affiliates doing it for free...it may be hard to find them unless they personally know you.

However, if you set it up that the proceeds go to the charity direct... like bank account or something on their site that points to yours to make it seem legit, it will help people to make that decision to contribute.

There are some big names out there and they will certainly help... it's just a matter of finding the right people that are in that frame of mind to want to help.

Couldn't agree more. We are going to be working on that ASAP tomorrow.

The hardest part to balance is wanting the money to go direct vs knowing that some people are going to buy from us and then issue paypal disputes to get a refund. So if our contact isn't IM savvy we'll probably have to settle for the logo on their website option to avoid putting them through that.

If anyone has got alternatives, please speak up!

Have you seen the Chip-In Widget?
    ChipIn

There's a plugin called WPFooter that you can post the widget code into after each blog post?

Thought these might help with the set-up?

      Hi Andy and John,

Is there a consequence if the fundraising goal is not met? It is a bet after all. Something outrageous can certainly make for a good story and create some buzz for this fundraising initiative.

I am in for posting some blog/microblog posts and bookmarking. I will also encourage some of my fundraising friends to get involved.

      Have fun with it!

    Thanks for everyone's continuing support.

I'm currently working hard to recruit sponsors who
will be willing to promote the charity offer for zero
commissions and I'm getting some great responses.

Please do tell as many people as you can that they
can sign up as an affiliate here:
    WP Syndicator

Check out the great graphics that Karl Warren has
very kindly donated while you're there. :-)

    Thanks

Speaking of FaceBook, you would also have this featured on FaceBook Causes and have the capability to invite your co-marketers to support this.

    I hope this helps too.

Thanks, I just wish we had time to organise all these
things. We are very much relying on the goodwill of
ohers to help spread the word.

And, as we're launching the Asthma Charity Challenge
in less than six hours from now, it's all hands to the
      pumps!

Just a quick note to be mindful of accessibility issues if using WP; some themes are better than others. This might not be as big of an issue for an asthma organization but I wanted to mention it anyway.

I built a website and much more (pro-bono) for a new non-profit organization as well. They did not want to use wordpress because of potential accessibility issues vs. current html standards.

    Just a quick update...

In less than 4 days, we have managed to raise
just over $6,500 for the asthma charity.

With all the help and support we are getting from
this amazing community I have every confidence
    that we'll reach our target.

    Thanks!

Just discovered this thread. I've got asthma, so I'd be more than happy to run a blurb about in my newsletter. I've got over 10,000 subscribers. It's not about blogging, but some of 'em have to have a blog. PM me some promo material if you're still looking for help spreading the word.

I'm interested in this but I don't know if those of us that use AlertPay can contribute.

This is one thing that gives me happiness and unfathomable joy.

Somehow I missed the latest additions to this thread.

@MarkAndrews - Thank you so much, I'd take you up on the offer but since we're only running until 19th July I'm not sure we'd really have time to take advantage of this. If you think it's worth trying though I'd absolutely love to hear from you and will do everything I can to help!

@dougp and King Shiloh - PMs on their way
