How do you make money online?

At first, it is not particularly easy to make money online! It is very possible, but so many internet marketers will tell you that making money online will be easy, if you only had the product or service they are trying to sell you! This is simply not true!

Making money online is a skill, and just like any other skill it can be learned; like cooking, construction, or like the job you have now! You had to learn how to cook, and you had to practice to get good at it! You had to learn how to do the job you have now, and you had to practice to get good at it! Same thing with making money online; you have to learn how to make money online, and you have to practice to get good at it!

The process of making money online:

Find a Niche > Keyword Research > Make a Website > Build a Mailing List > Promote Related Products to Your Mailing List

You only have to set this process up once! Once you have this process set up, your website and your auto responder will automatically take each visitor through this process! You can then spend most of your time and effort on generating targeted traffic, because you know that once someone gets to your website, they will automatically be taken through this process!

The most VALUABLE ASSET an internet marketer could have is a MAILING LIST! I make almost 100% of my online INCOME from my mailing list!

Protect your mailing list with your life! You will spend alot of time and effort getting people to sign up to your mailing list, so you might as well just take a few extra minutes, and make a little extra effort to keep the people on your mailing list happy!

Only send something to your mailing list if you truly believe it will help the people on your mailing list! If the people on your mailing list get the feeling that you are sending them something just to make a commission, you have just shot yourself in the foot!

If one person gets this feeling, chances are everyone will get the same feeling, because everyone on your mailing list is getting the same email, since your auto responder will take one email that you have written, and send it to everyone who signs up to your mailing list!

The main purpose of your website should be to build your most valuable asset; your mailing list!

To get people to sign up to your mailing list, offer your visitors a helpful, useful, valuable, FREE GIFT, in exchange for their NAME and EMAIL ADDRESS!

Then, continue to send the people on your mailing list helpful, useful, valuable, FREE INFORMATION that compliments the free gift you gave them!

Up to this point, the people on your mailing list have received a helpful, useful valuable, free gift, and free information that compliments the free gift, and all they have given you is their name and email address!

These people really like you at this point, and they can't wait to get another email from you, because everything you have sent them so far has done nothing but benefit them, and they have not paid you a dime so far!

So, since they really like you, and they can't wait to get another email from you, you might as well give them what they want! Only this time send them an email that contains a link to a PAID product or service! Again, just make sure that you truly believe that the paid product or service will benefit them!

The people on your mailing list will be much, much, much more likely to buy from you now than they were when they visited your website for the first time!

That means that your CONVERSION rate will be much, much, much higher than it would be if you tried to sell something directly from your website!

TRAFFIC + CONVERSION = INCOME

So, now that you have maximized your conversion rate, you can concentrate most of your time and effort on generating targeted TRAFFIC!

    Great advice Matthew

Sometimes more experienced marketers seem to forget to explain the basics.

I make money via multiple revenue streams:

    Adsense
    Direct product sales
    Web services
    Affiliate sales

My approach varies depending on the niche, and of course if something doesn't work well I try other methods to see what will be most effective

Advertising and affiliate programs are how I'm making money online. Nothing fancy, just info pages and a ton of targeted traffic.

There are plenty of great ways to make money listed on this forum. Some take a little work to find though. I have found that if you take someone's idea you have to put a little spin on it. Figure out what is the most important step and then do it a little better.

How do I make money online? I sell public domain ebooks at Amazon. There are millions of books in the public domain. Amazon has about 500,000 books listed for sale in their Kindle store. It also only takes a few minutes to get set up with them.

Once you have an account you need to:
      • research and find a book to sell
      • format it for the Kindle
      • create a book cover
      • upload your book and cover to Amazon
      • fill out the other questions on the sales page
      • submit your book for a quality review
Once Amazon approves your book and it goes live you don't need to do anything else. Royalties are paid out once a month. You receive your check approximately 60 days after the month closes.

      Hi Matthew

Well, I make money online in several ways.

I provide product support for product vendors.

I sell a course showing people how they can do the same - so I actually use the method I am selling.

I create niche websites in subjects I am interested in and contact like minded website owners to arrange JV's

      It's all going quite well

People have made some excellent points on here and I especially love the part about caring for your subscribers once you get them.

A well known UK marketer called Jon Street made 30k in a couple of days from an email list of just over 600 because he looked after them well.

      Matthew,

I follow the "plan" as the OP stated---with some slight variations.

HOW I make money online (my bread and butter) is by offering LOW COST information products in a wide variety of topics, niches and sub niches.

I actually have a simple 7 Step Formula:

      1) Choose a topic
      2) Write a HOTSHEET on the topic
      3) Expand hotsheet into 4 page "White Paper"
      4) Use White Paper for citations and "bullet points"
      5) Turn bullet points into subject headers
      6) Use the 7 MINUTE Article writing method to expand it
      7) Put your IP on the market and sell baby sell

As part of the first 3 steps, you'll automatically do the "research" you need and find web sites which will be useful in the marketing part.

A good topic is one which has a group of people with either a problem or a passion about the topic.

I'll give you an example. GOLF.

Golf is a topic, but it is a large topic...how about just one part of golf, the mental aspects.

So I'll use google, yahoo, bing and eBay to search for "golf mind", "golf mental" etc. And I'll bookmark the top 10 searches from each site. This creates a "resource" section I can pull from and cite if need be.

Next, I'll create a hotsheet, also called a "cheat sheet" or a FACT sheet. ONE page of facts and url's on the topic. What are the mental aspects of golf? Who is teaching these? How?

What products are being SOLD at amazon and ebay on this subject? By whom? For how much?

From this hotsheet I'll write a four page White Paper on the topic using a method I developed called the 7 Minute Article...

The White Paper will include the web sites, the amazon and ebay finds, it lays out all the information I'll be using for the SPECIAL REPORT I'll create on this topic.

From the White Paper, I'll make a list of as many BULLET POINTS as I can create. Could be a few or dozens.

Then I pick and choose these bullet points to make subject headers.

And then use the 7 MINUTE ARTICLE writing technique to fill out the report.

OK. I use Open Office to do the writing. Push a button and convert it to a PDF. Upload to one of my web sites.

Create a short sales page (using a template). GET my PayPal button. Write a thank you page and begin to sell. I'll start by using SIG files at the various forums that have to do with GOLF.

It is an EASY and SIMPLE way to get started and by using a tested and proven formula, one that has withstood the test of time (20 years for me, so far)...it is almost foolproof.

That is as in depth as time allows. Hope this helps.

There are really only 4 business models for online businesses:
    1) Advertising Model (banners, adsense, coregs, etc)
    2) Ecommerce (sell your own product that you create your self or buy from someone....this is very diverse from dropshipping to plr, to original product development etc)
    3) Lead Generation (you could call this "money at a discount"....the reason why companies pay affiliate marketers is that it lowers what's called the 'customer acquisition costs'.....if you have a list of 100 hot prospects that convert at 10% you know somewhere in there you have a product sale...it's just a matter of time)
    4) Affiliate Marketing (here you sell other people's products and the emphasis isn't so much on driving traffic to your site as the final destination; the merchant's site is the final destination)

In edition to 1-4 it's important to understand the different ways of acquiring traffic - the first two are the best as they are independent traffic sources:
    1) email
    2) type-in/direct navigation traffic
    3) social traffic
    4) pay per click traffic
    5) pay per view and other media buys
    6) Search Engine Traffic
There's more to be written of course - but, if you understand the 4 business models and the top 5 or so ways of getting traffic (build or buy)..you will be FAR FURTHER ALONG than the average person.....

I have been full time marketing online since 2007 selling Internet Education Products(similar to Internet College) globally and to offline businesses. This kind of information is in high demand. I did have to learn how to drive massive amounts of traffic. Using Google Adwords, Articles, Blogs, Forums, Social Media and Video Marketing. I think its pretty simple to learn but it is hard work. Doesn't happen overnight, must have your head and mindset in the right place to be successful.

I have never used anything, except email marketing, to make money online, and it has been working quite well actually!

But, the reason I went into detail about specific actions that I take to make money online is because I was hoping that some other people would go into detail about specific actions that they take to make money online, instead of just making a general statement about a general technique that they use!

Thank you to the couple of people that went into a little more detail about the specific actions they take to make money online, but, by starting this thread, I was hoping to get more specific, detailed information about how other people are making money online!

Can anyone give a specific, detailed description of exactly what actions they take to make money online?

I created a huge superhero site last year which is about 55 pages with sections on History/Bio, Wallpaper, Contests, Art Galleries, DVDs, Toys, Statues, Online Games, etc. I specifically designed it for comic fans and not for the search engines. On the site itself, I put a lot of amazon products and adsense and have made quite a bit of revenue from both. The biggest amazon product I ever made a commission from was an Iron Man Hulk Buster statue which went for over $700. I made something like $22 or something for it. Only 4% of the commission which kinda stinks but oh well. Those are Amazon's rules.
But the problem is I'm trying to rank for a VERY competitive keyword and hence will take me a lot more effort on the SEO side to really go up the ranks.
The keyword I'm ranking for has 23 million competing pages on Google. I launched my site on July 20, 2009. I did very little SEO. The highest ranking my site ever received was #62 or page 6 of Google for its keyword which in itself is pretty impressive. How many people do you know who can build a site and within 3 months, get it ranking in the top 100 for a keyword with 23 million competing pages?
Anyway, my point is that if you enjoy creating websites and monetizing them and can get traffic to them, you'll score big. Just as long as you're getting traffic which is key.
I think I like Affiliate Marketing most of all. I'm not really a fan of people who make like 500 small Adsense sites and make nickels and dimes from each. I'd much rather make some massive sites, really monetize them and have people enjoy visiting them and hanging around playing the games, signing up for the contests, going through the art galleries and wallpapers, etc.
But that's just me. I'd have been smarter trying to rank for a smaller keyword with less competition though. But it doesn't deter me from making more big sites and trying to get more traffic. IM is hard work but it can be enjoyable. The only challenge or basically the biggest challenge for everybody involved in IM is getting traffic.
Can't thrive in IM without it.

I make the majority of my online income from a combination of affiliate marketing, and my internet marketing consulting business.

In my opinion, affiliate marketing is the best way to make money online. However, as some of the previous posters have stated their are a variety of ways to make money online.

The most important thing for anyone to do is make sure that they pick a business model, and stick to it. The main reasons that most new marketers fail is either lack of work ethic, or information overload.

Make money online is definitely not easy for beginners. However, it is absolutely for advanced and experts don't you think

In order to be success, you need to learning and keep learning. It will not happen in a day or month. One important reminder, don't ever try to go with the shortcut because it will not work and it will never will! Well unless if you are lucky? (if that's the case then fine...good luck!)

    Just my opinion

    Thank you everyone!

This is some much appreciated, helpful information!

@ JamieSEO - You are correct! Some experienced marketers assume that the people they are teaching know things that they might not, and yes, split testing different methods is good advice! Thank you!

@ moneykws - Thank you for the explaination!

@ imon32red - Thank you! I really appreciate the explaination of the specific actions you take to make money online!

@ sdentrepreneur - Yes, the "internet marketing" and "make money online" niches will always produce alot of money, IF the solution you are providing is the best solution to the problem you are helping people solve and it is a widely spread, irritating problem, IF you maximize your conversion rate, and IF you can manage to get enough traffic, since you are in such a highly competitive niche, perhaps the most competitive niche out there!

What I do, is go after a "sub-niche", which is a section of the "internet marketing" or "make money online" niches! My sub-niche is "make my own website", which has much less competition than the 2 previously mentioned, much broader niches, and less competition means that it becomes much more possible to generate alot more traffic using the search engines, instead of beating your head against the wall trying to promote the broader niches using non-SEO techniques, because your SEO techniques usually will not work for those highly competitive, broad niches!

@ Hanz - Thank you for sharing your story! Hearing about your success is very motivating to me, even tho I am not completely new, and I have been able to generate some online income!

@ mlord10 - I totally agree! I am also into affiliate marketing, using a confirmed opt-in email marketing technique, which really maximizes my conversion rate, meaning I don't have to generate nearly as much traffic to make the same amount of traffic, compared to someone who uses a marketing technique that does not convert as well, which, in my opinion, includes just about all other marketing techniques! Good advice! The reason people fail is because they don't pick a system they truly believe in, and stick with that system until you get the results you were looking for! Every time you give up on a system, you are basically starting over, besides the experience you take with you, but who knows how much of that information is going to apply to the next system you choose to follow! So, I totally agree, pick a system you truly do believe in, and stick with that system! The grass is NOT greener on the other side of the fence, it just appears that way! Thank you, and good luck!

@ mnonline - I agree! If you have already made money online, whatever you did to make some money is usually easily duplicated! However, making that first amount of money is the hardest part! The hardest part is actually getting started, and actually taking ACTION! Nothing happens if you don't take action! How could anything happen with no action? It couldn't, which means that all the information in the world will not happen, unless you choose which information you want to implement into your own business, and here's the key.... You actually have to DO it in order to become successful!

I DO read every response, and I DO appreciate every "Thanks" I get! I'm sorry if I did not respond personally to your post, but I do appreciate the feed back!

"How do you make money online?" is a very popular question, and any helpful information you can give on this topic is very much appreciated, and I am sure more than one person would benefit from any helpful information you could add!

Do you have any other helpful, valuable information to add to this thread?

If so, we would love to hear it!

    Thank you, and good luck!

    This is a good read.

Historically, most of the money I've been making online has been from ad sales. I used to run a number of free, traffic-based sites (e.g. social networking/blogging community, search engine), where I could get large numbers of pages indexed by Google and sell text links.

I took a break from things after I graduated and started my job. Now, I'm trying to get back in and concentrating on ecommerce and affiliate/CPA sales.

Has anyone used Fiverr.com in their online money making endeavors?....I know each gig will only get you $5 at a clip, however, I'm really brainstorming ways to use this effectively....

This would be tricky to execute, but, with multiple purchases allowed for a single gig, it MAY be possible to suck people into a bit of a funnel here, where they need and WANT your service repeatedly....thus multiplying those $5 payouts.....

I used to make some pretty decent income from Fiverr.com, but competition is becoming more fierce. I really just outsource what gigs I have setup over there, and use the money I make to fund other ventures.

I've missed this place, you'd be amazed at how much time can be sucked up when your going to college.

The rest of my income I usually makes from short information reports that tend to focus on one thing in specific. I hope to launch my own WSO very soon.

In my experience, you just have to keep moving and not depend on one single source for your money.

Thank you Tonio, that is so true!

I'm glad you brought that up!

No matter what techniques you use to make money online, you are going to have to overcome obstacles, some large and some small, period.

The people that push through, and come up with the best solutions to their own problems, have alot better chance to accomplish their own goals!

There are going to be problems, believe me, I know! ;-)

It's what you do when faced with those problems that determines whether or not you accomplish your goals!

Thank you everyone, for your responses to this thread!

    Thank you, and good luck!

    Thank you everyone!

It sounds like alot of you are saying that you think it is smart to diversify, as opposed to relying on one source of income, which I think is a good idea, but....

Only after you have mastered one income earning method!

There is no sense in starting a whole bunch of different campaigns, spread across 17 different niches, if you start working on all these campaigns at once, but you don't see any of them through to completion!

Then people become overwhelmed, and give up on all of it, because they have so much to do that they don't know what to do next, and none of there ideas are working, and they have to deal with 17 different failures!

Don't get me wrong, owning as much online property as possible is a good thing, but I would not take on more than 1 campaign at a time!

Concentrate on one project at a time, plan your work, and work your plan, consistently and persistently overcome any and all obstacles that get in your way, don't just skip them, and see your project through to completion, until it is bringing in the income you wanted it to bring in!

Then go on to the next project, but not until the project you are working on is completed!

    Thank you, and good luck!

    Hey Matthew,

Congratulations on your great post and emphasis on list building.

I've been marketing on the Internet since 2003 and have built a 100,000+ opt-in list within a specific niche and I have to admit, the $1,000 a month I invested over the years in PPC ads has paid off for me "big time"!

Building a list has been the best investment I've ever made in my life. It's literally a gold mine. For example, today at about 7:30pm (Miami time) I sent out an email blast for a product that I haven't promoted since last year.

It's 11:30 and I've already made 16 sales @ $37 dollars, or about $592.00 in 4 hours. Not too bad for sending out an email...It sure beats working for a living. LOL

Now I'm not bragging, I'm just trying to show the people who are just starting out in the online marketing game, the "awesome" power of building a list and cultivating a win-win relationship with the subscribers on your list.

I always jokingly tell my kids that the "Golden Rule" at our house is, "He who has the gold makes the rules".

But in the world of Internet Marketing, the golden rule is...

"He who has the LIST makes the rules".

If you're just starting out in this business. Print out the Golden Rule of Internet Marketing and post it on the wall in front of your desk.

You'll be happy you did and you'll make a lot more money if you follow that rule every day.

    Happy List-Building,

    Charles Denney

The best way to make money online is taking action.

I help offline businesses to set up online presence. My experience is to take action and do not keep going around trying everything new under the sun.

The main obstacle is information overload and distractions. The best description of information overload Ive ever heard came from Rich Schefren when he compares it with trying to drink water out of a fire hose.

Very true.... Focus, and take action

    Hello guys!

Knowing how to make money online through a business involves the careful steps of building your online presence. You need to observe a step by step procedure that drafts everything included within your business plan. Plans are a prerequisite for taking action. It allows you to view your business from different angles and be able to distinguish the right course of action for each.
Planning how to make money online by creating an Internet business will involve the following factors:
Goal setting - Your business plan should start with goals. This is where you list down what you hope to achieve by engaging in your online business. It does not have to be strictly professional. You can cite personal goals that you want to fulfill as you roll out your business. Just keep in mind that your goals must be paired with a time frame. It should also be feasible enough to be done within the said time frame. Make your goals realistic.
SWOT analysis - Every business plan, regardless if it's offline or online, needs to undergo a SWOT analysis wherein the business and its people's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats will be identified. It's through these four pillars that you can have a closer look at the possibilities you can take advantage of at the moment, as well as identify parts of your business which must be addressed and improved immediately.
USP identification - USP pertains to unique selling proposition. This is your online business' key differentiator and will ultimately answer how to make money online through your chosen endeavor. Take note of what makes your business stand out from the competition. Highlight these key features and work around an effective strategy that would enable you to sell these to your market. These days, consumers are more concerned with what products can do for them. You should also incorporate some business branding in your USP so that you can create market recall.
Action plan - When you already have your goals, have identified your strengths and weaknesses, and have already understood what would make your business unique, the next thing you need to work on is your action plan. This tells you how, when and where you will be rolling out your marketing campaign. This is what springs all your planning components into life. Just remember that there should be some metrics involved in your action plan so you can eventually evaluate the efficiency of your sales and marketing endeavors.

    Wow, thank you everyone!

Now that was the kind of feed back I was looking for!

@ Charles Denny - It looks like you have it figured out! My conversion rate is pretty good, but how did you get the traffic you needed to grow a list of over 100,000 subscribers? That is very impressive! Do you have any specific advice?

I am planning on building a blog to try to build my list a little faster by getting alot more search engine traffic than I have been getting from my website!

I am just afraid of taking a hit on my conversion rate, if I give my visitors other options! If a visitor has any other options, besides taking my free gift in exchange for their name and email address, its possible that I might take a hit on my conversion rate! But, even if my conversion rate goes down a little, if I am doubling, tripling, or quadrupling my traffic by making a blog (I would still have an opt-in form on my blog), it could be worth it!

What are your thoughts on that?

    Thank you!

    Matthew,

That was a very helpful info. Though it is the most fundamental, many internet marketers including myself tend to view our subscribers not as people but as "a list". Especially I used to just spam them with affiliate promotions without really offering helpful information. It took a while for me to realize how important it is to treat your subscribers with respect and make their time worthwhile whenever I send something to them. Better late than never, right? : )
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2257498].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author matthewzinda
That is another great point Joseph!

You invest all of that time and effort into getting people to sign up to your list, why not take an extra 5 minutes, and look up one more thing to make sure you are giving people the most updated, relevant, accurate, helpful information!

That is why people signed up to your list in the first place isn't it?... For updated, relevant, accurate, valuable, helpful information!

If you don't give it to them, they are going to listen to other people, owners of other lists that they have signed up to, and pay no attention to you, and even unsubscribe from your list!

It takes a whole lot less time, effort, and money to keep someone on your list than it does to try to get someone to sign up to your list!

So, make sure you protect your list with your life!

Act as though you are on your own list!

What would you want to get in your inbox?

How would you want to be treated?

Q - Why did you go into business in the first place?

A - Should be to provide the most people with the best solution to their worst problem!

If you keep that in mind at all times, the money will follow!

    Thank you, and good luck!

I haven't made any money on-line yet, though have run a successful off line business. The key for me was the understanding of my customers, everything about them, having a clear strategy, vision and plan and most importantly knowing my strengths and weaknesses, using my strengths to my advantage and understanding my weaknesses so that they don't limit me. I absolutely agree with the opening poster about building a list - it's the most sensible way of going about building a sustainable business as it maximises your value per visitor.

I used to do purely thin affiliate marketing when I first started out - it paid the bills for a while but once I started to build a list my revenue (from the same amount of traffic) more than doubled in one of the larger niches that I was working in. That was the lightbulb moment for me!

For me, being diverse has always been my thing. Im not really a Master at one thing, but Im a pro at a lot of things..

    1. My first way I started making money still works today. Simple adsence sites with a specific keyword base. I make 3 unique posts..then setup wp robot to keep adding content. It takes about 30-60 days for each site to make money, but then each site averages 75 cents per day or $23 per month. So scale this out...I have 105 sites that Gross me about $2415 per month.

    2. I still do simple clickbank review sites. I use a screen record program and go thru the entire purchase...then I show them what the members area looks like. Then upload that to youtube and do some SEO to get your videos ranked. And I put my affiliate link in the description and I offer a $10 rebate (that they claim after 60 days because of the return policy)..and out of 100 people that buy, you might get 1 person that remembers to ask for the return.
depending on how many reviews you do a month..(lets say 2) and how much time you spend on seo (lets say not that much) ...I make between $300-500 a month with these.
    3. CPA. this is my baby. this is where I make most of my money. the secret to CPA is to match your offer with the right audience.
an example of this is..... I pay 2 people on a regular basis to tape my flyers to redbox machines in my local town of Phoenix AZ... These flyers say "STOP.. Dont spend money on movies...Get Free Movies in Phoenix Only....and have my affiliate link to netflix.
another example that I do is...i take another flyer with my affiliate link for a mortgage offer. I (pay someone) to tape the flyer in the laundry rooms of appartment buildings that say "I can get you your own home for less than your paying here."
another great cpa offer is gamefly? can you think of where lots of people are that play tons of video games? well I use college campuses...its total madness..

    4. Craigslist. if you can post lots and lots of ads...you will make a killing. Many people call the craigslist tactics black hat or grey hat, but If ur willing to do that, you can make some serious cash. just promoting cpa offers.

    5. Offline. This is a new area to me and its starting to be my favorite. I have focused the past 3 months the majority of my time on a strategie that I am not ready to talk about yet...sorry. But you can not beat providing "Real Value to Real People."

What has always worked for me is to work a system until I know it inside and out...then I hire people to do it for me....then I move on to the next..and the next. Its been a 7 year journey for me...3 years of hardly making any money followed by 2 years of working a trillion hours a week and never sleeping..and leading to the past 2 years of all my systems are now working for me.

Whatever your goals are...dont ever quit!!!
