Nice graphic. It would be nice if they also added a chart showing details by age groups. Did they have anything like that in another graphic or in the accompanying report?

It would be an interesting statistic to be aware of.

Thanks for making it bigger, I feel like there is more than 27 billion hours spent each month on the internet when you include everyone, it says there's 1.8 billion people who use the internet, id say everyone of them spends at least an hour each month, and some MUCH MUCH MUCH more than that.

That's actually people who could use the internet... people who have access to an internet-connected computer. My three-year-old has access to an internet connected computer, but he's not using the internet all that much.

Ahh gotcha, those numbers make more sense now. Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure if I agree with 1/8 people having problematic use/dependancy when it comes to the internet. I know a lot of people who use the internet, and a lot of people who spend plenty of time on it, but I don't know if I would call them addicted. People these days get bored easily, and there is just so many things you can do on it that it's the perfect thing to pass the time with. But addiction? I'm just not so sure.

          That's signs of problematic use.

Sometimes those signs are stupid. There's a certain culture that doesn't approve of using anything a lot, so they label it "problematic" or "dependency" or "addiction" to make you feel bad about it.

For example, they might say "how often do you check your email?" - and they're thinking that you check your email to see whether your friends updated their Facebook status or sent you a LOLcat or something. But some of us quite legitimately make our living online - and need to check our email frequently because orders come in, problems are reported, or we're awaiting the response to a question.

If you check your email every fifteen minutes looking for a LOLcat, you have a problem. But if you check your email every fifteen minutes looking for business-related communications, you're being a responsible professional.

Likewise, if they say "how much time do you spend on the world wide web each day?" they're expecting that you spend that time on some stupid forum full of funny pictures and old jokes. But if you design web sites, and you spend that time checking the sites you build while you modify the look and feel of them - it's not the same thing.

I pretty much discount any scare-tactic about how much people are dependent on anything.

Sorry, I hope you didn't take what I said the wrong way. I wasn't saying that it was wrong, I was just saying that I thought it would have been even more. But still 27 billion hours a month is a lot.
