Advice on Monetizing a High Traffic Self Improvement Type Site

How would you monetize a content site on a self improvement / personal growth type topic that had 6 figure page views per day?

If you had a list for the site (and I get it now that I'm probably an idiot for not having developed a list these past years), how would you monetize the list?

(It is more of a personal growth type site, but religious ads seem to do to pretty good on it currently.)

Any advice is appreciated.

If you're getting thousands of page views per day, then you should at least start with google adsense. This will easily make you enough money to pay the rent.

But remember, google adsense is just a middle man.

Over time, you will want to observe the ads that are being placed and click on a few of the intriguing ones. Check out their affiliate programs and consider replacing the adsense ads with your own ads for these affiliate programs, this will create much more profit for you.

I don't think you will want to be clicking on those Adsense ads. It's against Google's terms and conditions to be clicking their ads on your own site.

It has Adsense but I'm trying to be less lazy and actually test out other things that might make more money.

I looked at some Adsense alternative sites and got ADD just from looking at the lists. There are so many other programs it could take a year to test them all and in the end I'm not sure they would pay any better.

I will check out the affiliate programs that have adsense ads on my site. That is a good idea.

Depending on the number of unique visitors that you're getting you may want to investigate selling some ad space on your site, don't use it as the only income method, but 10,000+ page views per day is a pretty good number to start selling some ad space. It's pretty hands free once you've got the clients and the system in place.

Paula is definitely right. You don't want to be clicking on adsense links on your site, at least not from your IP address. And I'm not suggesting that you click on the ads repetitively so that you can make more money from google, I'm just saying that you can get a good idea of what other people are advertising within your niche by checking out the adsense ads on your page.

Those people are putting ads on your website, through google, for a reason... maybe they are trying to funnel your traffic to their product or even an affiliate product... learn from them, cut out the middle man (google (which pays practically pennies per click)) and sell your own stuff or become an affiliate.

If you are making money with adsense already, then it should be obvious that you can be making much more...

I would like to try selling private ads. Actually people have emailed me in the past about buying ad space and I never followed up because I don't have any process in place to set the ads up.

Where would I start to sell private ads? I thought I could maybe put an "advertise on this site" on my site. I also thought about Adbrite. Adbrite seems easiest even though they take a fee because the advertisers could set up their own ads and Adbrite would handle the payment process.

If you are making money with adsense already, then it should be obvious that you can be making much more...
    That would be nice.....

Along the lines of what Statelizard said, diversify. I've been involved
with your market before and have read some things about monetizing
it. Of course nothing is absolute, but the best results from that market
are seen from recognizable names. That's my collective impression about
it. There are always exceptions, of course.

So perhaps a combination of adsense and relevant affiliate offers. Along
the lines of recognizable names, you may want to check out Nightingale
Conant. They do have an affiliate program, but some years ago when I
checked it out they paid quarterly which didn't appeal to me. But they have
a lot of names people generally recognize.

Another approach is to Google/Bing some keywords/phrases in your market
and look at the top 3, or so, sites. Then see how they're monetizing and
maybe get some ideas from that.

Have you considered selling eBooks, CD's, videos, courses, MP3 etc that can help people with their self improvement?

You have developed a large amount of traffic here and, if you have a lot of returning visitors, you have developed a large amount of trust.

With that much traffic, and with how you want to be more involved I would stay away from Adsense. I have tried it on my own sites and I never liked the ads that came through. If you personally developed it I would immediately create a survey of to get a feel for what your masses want, and more importantly, what they are willing to pay for.

Personally I love video. It connects with people in a way that few can describe.

Creating a channel, content foundation, (pulled from analytics on your site) and a dialog with your audience you can build a list quickly, effectively, and with a dramatically low cost. At that point you can create a product that THEY asked for and when you do, you will be praised for it. No pun intended.

Affiliate marketing is great, and many people make good money from it, but product creation allows you SO much more control, and you can ALWAYS find affiliate products to sell in conjunction with your personal product. But don't build it first! Find out what they want and what they are willing to buy FIRST!

If they come... You will build it...

About half the traffic is from bookmarks, but I don't know what that means in terms of the best ways to increase my income.

I haven't really worked on monetizing the site enough in the past so I haven't really considered much of anything, but I'm open to products like that.

Another approach is to Google/Bing some keywords/phrases in your market and look at the top 3, or so, sites. Then see how they're monetizing and maybe get some ideas from that.
A lot of my competitors go the banner ad route. Many of them have even higher traffic numbers than I do. But my site really wasn't designed with banners in mind. I think the reason I get my traffic with less work than some of my competitors is because I don't have a lot of banners and flashing monkey ads. So I'm trading off maximizing monetization in the short term for more bookmarks, return traffic and natural links in the long term. Things like other text ads or books, CDs, etc would probably all look fine, though.

One of my competitors in a marketing guy with all sorts of new gimmicks every week for making money. But I'm not sure in the long run he is making more money than I am (he could be making a ton more, I don't really know) because he seems to have employees plus he puts a lot of effort into his site while for me it is semi-passive income, plus I have other sites set up the same way.

but the best results from that market
are seen from recognizable names. That's my collective impression about
it. There are always exceptions, of course.

That is a great tip. I will check them out.
