A Simple Way To Make This Forum Run More Pleasantly

As much a this forum is a wonderful place at most times. There are always the odd bunch who don't think before they type and even those who are plain malicious and just want to cause trouble.

What I have found that I do recently and its occurring more often for me is typing a post.....but not clicking the submit button and then just closing the window

Yes thats right....its a great way to say what you want, blow off a little steam yet not look like a idiot or cause offense to others. I haven't perfected this method yet, sometimes some posts will slip through the filter

If others tried this, we would all be a little happier here.

Give it a go.....*yes this will require using your brain cells and a little will power not to click submit*

PS: I'm also curious to hear if anybody else here does this.

    Now, there's a good idea!
I do try and double check forum posts before submitting.

That's funny, I did this exact thing earlier today... I wanted to provide some quality content for a thread, but I was having a hard time formulating the right words to describe my thoughts about the subject...after reviewing and rewriting my post a few times, I just completely scrapped it... it kind of felt good.

Anyway, you bring up a good point. Sometimes people forget that they are publishing content on a resource that is visible to the entire world..

If we ever get an abusive or unreasonable email from a customer we type our reply, save it to draft and then open it the next day.

We never send the original reply.

Yes. Its true! I do the same when I am angry at work, or someone has sent me an email that is accusatory. I write the reply and then save it. When I come back the next day I often realise that I was being over-sensitive. In any case there is little to be gained by tit for tat.

This forum has really been both controversial and valuable for every user online and thus, it could both bring in either right or wrong information from different posters. Though still, majority of the users here are knowledgeable enough of their fields to help more people than jerk off so I'm still thankful there are still more people who check on their posts first.

    Thanks for the reminders Ernie.

This happens to me a lot of times. Sometimes, there is a topic and you think that you can contribute something. But if I cannot say anything good, I would rather not say anything at all. So with that, I end up closing the tab and looking for another thread.

As they say 'say helpful words, not harmful words'. Helpful words can encourage people to move while harmful words will only stop them from moving. Who would you rather be? Someone who propels people to move or someone who stops them?

This is a nice reminder Ernie. Thank you.

I know that feeling too. Especially when you get a nasty mail or comment from someone. The natuaral responce is to reply in the same kind of tone and of course add some censored words.

I like the suggestion of checking yourself before you hit submit or reply if you want to urge people on or simply be the bad guy and just hinder people.

    Life is a choice.

This is actually a common practice for me. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. I'll type my response, feel better, then just close it.

    Great advice!

I've done this too many times, either on a reply or when I wanted to submit a thread. Then again, sometimes I can't help myself.

I agree as well on this:

"There are always the odd bunch who don't think before they type and even those who are plain malicious and just want to cause trouble."

I used to think this forum was reserved for intelligent, entrepreneurs but the more I frequent this place, the more I realize there are some genuine, bona-fide forum trolls (with lots of posts too) who only speak to cause trouble and rarely have anything of substance to contribute.

    kk, but I whine sometimes.

I joined this forum earlier this month and by the way it has been one of the best decisions ever. The information here is priceless.
I have to agree with you Ernie. One of the first threads I visited had a newbie asking someone to mentor them and a lot of guys just completely abused him. I mean I can understand that people were telling him to work for his own success and not expect a mentor but some of the things said went overboard and this by people with thousands of posts.
Whether you are having a bad day or whatever else I think it is only fair you think twice about what you are saying to others.
    This was a needed thread.

I do this all the time on every forum I'm active on, not just here. And not just because I wanted to say something offensive

Sometimes I'll respond to something and then think "You know, do I really want to get involved in this discussion about XYZ?"

If I'm not entirely sure whether I want to post, I'll just copy & paste my response into a text file and come back to it later, re-read it and decide if I really want to say that when it's not in the "heat of the moment."

Sounds like you have way too much time on your hands.
A perfect example of why this idea is so useful...

Yes, Ernie, I do that a lot. And not just when I have something snarky to say. I'll often start to respond and realize that what I was about to say adds nothing to what others have already said. On the flip side, there are times I would rather ignore a comment, but one is made that I think has the potential to do more harm than good. Like this one...
100% of the time those old timers will dis what you have to say to push a product in their sig.
This is a rather bold statement. The guy has been a member for 10 days. Based on that massive experience he's determined that this is a certainty.

I don't pay a lot of attention to post count in most circumstances. We've got a lot of members with very few posts who have extraordinary levels of knowledge and experience. One exception to the post count thing is when someone comments on how the forum is/should be run.

I don't care how long someone may have been lurking. Until you get into it and start participating, you very likely don't even begin to understand the dynamic. (The exceptions are few and far between.) A very quick way to achieve the "Ignored" status you suggest is to come in here and tell people how the place works based on such limited experience.

By the way, Yukon, your daily post count average is much higher than that of many of the people you claim are "hung up on themselves." Your post would have benefited from the kind of "pre-submit" thought Ernie is suggesting. [Edit: If I had posted 7 messages a day for the time this software knows I've been a member, my post count would be in excess of 20,000.]

One way to make the suggestion in the OP more effective is to type up responses in a text editor. That makes it a bit harder to just click and submit the post without that extra second thought. It also keeps you from losing lengthy responses if something glitches or the thread is deleted while you're typing it up.

Ernie, your post and Paul's response made me do a lot of thinking.

I posted way too much here.

I know I still have a boat load of posts, but my daily post count has
dropped from over 14 per day to about 11 per day in just under a year.

I think a lot more now before saying something and don't post anywhere
near as much. Most threads, these days, if somebody has already answered
the question the way I would have, I just pass it by. What's the point of
saying something that's already been said?

I think if we all just took even just a second to think before we post, we'd
post less and the posts we do make would be more meaningful.

That is something I certainly strive for every single day and I want to
thank you for reminding me of that.

Yeah, this place would run a lot smoother if we all just did a little more
        thinking and less reacting.

          Your welcome Steve!

But please dont cut down too much on your posting. I don't think you have too much to worry about, your posts are always meaningful and helpful!

In fact sometimes I see a popular thread and don't have time to read it at that time and just scroll down looking for that Steve W photo (which you haven't changed in god knows how long ) and start reading the good stuff.

But I of course always go back and read the whole thread because there are many others who are just as helpful as you so dont get too full of yourself haha:p

I dunno, Steve - I think a lot of us here have learned quite a bit from you. Everybody posts things they regret, but I think you've probably helped a lot more than you imagine.

Ernie, I shudder to think what my post count would be if I posted every rant and argument and tell-off I've typed. That back button is surely your friend.

I don't know how many times I've lit into someone, then looked at what I've typed and said to myself that it wasn't worth it.

I do that all the time. Or, at least most of the time. A few years ago, I didn't do that. I just typed away. Hit the send button. Then....immediately I felt bad. Maybe I should have not replied or stated my opinion.

Nowadays, I advise folks to wait until tomorrow to publish their replies if they are upset in any way. And, in my case, by the time tomorrow arrives I am in a more 'meller' mood.

The first time I ever ran across the Warrior Forum, I came upon a couple of fellers here that were havin' it out. I was captivated. But, I have tried to avoid such things.
