Straight Talk on Internet Marketing

Ok...

Here is the deal as I see it for a lot of the new people out there.

It does not matter WHAT Product you choose to buy, join as an affiliate to promote, niche you choose etc.

You have to generate visitors and traffic...Yes I realize that you all know this.

But here is the bottom line....it comes down to two principles

You either pay for your traffic...so figure out how much you want to spend on a monthly basis and develop a plan...do some more research on effective marketing and do it.

OR

You have to generate traffic through free methods. Which is Content Generation...I don't care what it is. Squidoo, Blogs, Websites, HubPages, Social network sites....what ever.

At the end of the day...before you pick a product for your business make sure you know the business...and how it is that revenue is generated.

If you have "Advertising" dollars to spend then focus on PPC techniques that get results and do that first...then move on.

If you are on a limited budget...and cannot contribute to an "Advertsing" budget then focus on learning "Bum Marketing" methods first until you generate some cash...then move on from there.

There is no need to get overloaded with information. Keep it simple. Every product that is being promoted has bells and whistles...and unless it is specific to a "True" need to help you manage and grow your business such as A Keyword research tool, an affiliate manager software etc...then do not mess with it ..YET> When you see a sales page for stuff like that...if you are new...hit the big green back arrow and don't even read it. Why?
Because you do not need that stuff...YET>

Thoughts?

    Great overview Sean,

I think the 'Traffic' is what a great deal of new people don't seem to understand... You need to build that traffic just like a brick and mortar business... it takes time, and effort.

I hear so many newbies crying... I did what you said, I setup a blog, lens, linked them to clickbank products, but I have no sales!!!!!! waaaaaaa...

There is more of an art-form to building solid traffic than people think...

Not to mention rolling up your sleeves and getting into it. Digging deep and staying with it.

Sean you missed my best methods:

1 - Find people who already have access to the traffic you want and work out a win-win way for them to want to send you it (help them make money, pay them for advertising etc..) it doesn't have to cost money.

2 - Word of mouth and offline marketing. Some of my best online revenue comes from bringing offline customers online.

      Good post Sean.

I would like to second what Andy said, particularly about JV'ing with the folks who already have the traffic and lists. With rare exceptions this has been my sole strategy for both traffic and sales since starting in IM....to the tune of over $5 million in sales over the last handful of years.

Bottom line - it costs nothing and it works. Do it.

      Best regards to all,

          Sean,

Thanks. In my experience joint ventures with marketers who already have traffic and a list is by FAR the cheapest most effective way to build an internet marketing business quickly.

To give everyone an idea of how powerful this is, when I started out training in real estate I got my traffic mainly by posting on a real estate forum and getting a few eyeballs here and there. I did pretty well with this but it was HARD WORK.

I happened to connect with someone who had a list of 12K people. I said to him, "Hey could we send your list a few e-mails and get them on a teleclass?" He agreed even though I didn't have a JV track record.

Side note: The myth is that you need a track record to get people to JV with you. You do NOT...as long as you have something valuable that fits with the philosophy and goals of the list owner *and* matches the wants of their subscribers.

On the very first JV we did over $30K in sales, which we obviously split. But that shift in both my mindset and approach to my business literally took my income to an entirely new level within a couple weeks. Not months, not years. Weeks.

JV's are that powerful. And yes they can be that easy.

          Best regards,
          Ken

Can you elaborate on your methods a bit? I've thought of "accidentally" dropping flyers in places like bus stations but I'm not sure if it's worth the time.

    Very true Sean..

    I often say...

There are only 2 things you can do as an internet marketer online...

    Generate traffic
    Monetize said Traffic

    The rest is just horseplay

Yes, this is a good post - a nice reminder to be patient! I have a blog that's three years old that has steady traffic - but that's after I put in the effort to get it there.
