why is my site loading slow?

I've seen all the cautionary tales that Google caffeine favors quick loading pages... my main domain loads slower than I want it to and I'm not quite sure what's causing it.

I'd remove something if I knew what to remove.

Wordpress 3.0 running latest thesis, no skin
removed odigo audio plug in, that seemed to speed things up a tiny bit

I'm not sure where to look

what causes a page or a site to load slower than another?

total kb?

too many images?

the site in question is a WP blog, could too many navigation buttons cause a site to load slowly?

I've been using CMS's of one sort or anyother for so long I'm no longer as up to date as I once was with regular old webmastering skills

Webpage content require bandwidth transfer, if your website homepage is size up to 1MB, and its downloaded over the 100kb/sec bandwidth connection by user… it would require 10 seconds to complete the website loading. Hope this helps.

Your website seems to have A LOT of content. This requires everything on that page to load, causing a slower load time. My suggestion to you would be to change the number of posts you display on the home page from whatever you have now (4 or 5) to just 2. That should definitely increase your speed.

There are two major areas you should consider.

      1.
I noticed there are various connections to other services like zemanta, flickr, profliatic and so.

Cut them down if possible.Your website's load time will depend on response from these services. That being slow, will eventually mean you're website being slow.

      2.
Reducing post count. This will improve the performance greatly.

More post count = more data fetch requests.

PS: It loaded smooth for me though.

        Wow, thanks.. zemanta can go
flickr stays, probably pull less posts or ditch the description

profilactic... hmm, I did get a job from someone who was looking for a guru that had accounts at all of those places...

it's not like I need to prove myself anymore so, it can go as well

        thanks gang!!

It looks like your pulling data from half a dozen other sites.

The home page has too many articles on it.

When the page first started to load, the browser said "waiting for and the site name" - this could be caused from a slow database server response. If your own a shared host, its normal for database driven sites to be a little slow - as your having to share resources with other customers.

      kev and proaffiliate, thanks!

      reduce number of posts displayed

I just hope that doesn't lower my local rankings, only way to find out is to test

a temporary drop in my rank is easily fixed, it's not like I dunno what to do about it

      thank all of you!
