Why most of the wordpress themes are so crap?

Hi there.

I was just browsing through the free wordpress themes and I hardly can find at least one what I'm looking for.

There's a feeling like all those wp themes designers target teenage audience when designing themes.

I'm looking for good wp theme that will be good for health niche but in the same time is not locked to weight loss only and doesn't look too silly (like most of them)

Please recommend something decent. (source or theme in particular)

Thanks

Most of the time you get what you pay for. And since a lot of wordpress themes are free - I expect the majority of them to be poorly designed.

There are some exceptions, but to find a good free theme you have to dig and look around.

    Suffusion.

    I cant recommend it enough.

Its clean, simple, massively customisable, and very professional.

If you want an example then then links 2 and 3 in my signature below are built in that theme, both without any customisation apart from the in-built options.

Teenage themes - either that, or gambling, or adult-themed, is most of what I found.

These blog theme designers don't seem to bear in mind the purpose of online marketing - to MAKE MONEY. They seem to treat WP as just another platform for your FB or Twitter opinion, only in more than 160 characters. It's like just another social network to them.

If their livings depended upon it, I'm pretty sure their designs would be different. Just my two cents.

        Agreed.

By the way most of the threads are pretty flexible but only if you know PHP.

Um... for the overwhelming majority of the internet, that's precisely what the "blogosphere" is. Blogs aren't by definition money-makers any more than Twitter and Facebook and web sites in general are. That's sort of like complaining that almost all the cars at a used car lot are for casual drivers and commuters instead of commercial delivery drivers.

          Well.... okay But nonetheless...

They are that way, by definition, but with so many businesses and even individuals turning to blogs as their sole content manager for their websites, you'd think there'd be more IM-friendly themes out there.d

Granted, as others have mentioned here, you get what you pay for and the garbage ones are free, but the paid ones aren't always anything to write home about. WF seems to be rife with threads about affiliates who have hired freelancers to code their websites/blogs and they still turn out to be a hassle.

So yes, people who sign up for a blog for the sake of a blog only might write windy and worthless content just like they do on their other social networks, but I think the IM niche is big enough someone could fulfill a few themes here and there. Even if they offered a free version and upgrades for a paid version. I'm sure there'd be IM'ers lining up out the door for a paid version that WORKS. Am I wrong?

      Here's a thought...

Maybe the so-called 'designers' don't give a rat's behind whether their theme is any good or not. Like the profile spammers, I mean "link builders", they just want the backlink in the footer and usually in the header code as well.

They don't even care much if people use them, as long as the thousands of "free theme" sites pick them up.

If you really need a free theme, look for samples from real designers and learn to customize them for yourself.

I can think of much worse places to start than Cutline, it you want a suggestion...

I agree too. I'm using it in my blog that's listed in my signature. It seems to be a lot more stable and less buggy than a lot of the old free versions.

I added my own pic for variety but so far I am unable to fault it.

Most themes you can change the graphics easily. A guns'n'ammo
theme is easily converted to a peace-and-spirituality theme. You
just have to know how to change the graphics.

I work mostly with Atahualpa these days, which is a bit complex to
learn but extremely versatile. I don't recommend the latest versions,
which has a bevy of new features but presented problems with what
I wanted to do, but I'm finding version 3.4.6 works well.

The problem that I find even with most paid themes is that the person designing them is usually a graphic or web design student and ends up making portfolio and designer themes, when all I want is something that focuses on the content, not on the clever design.

Themeforest is a good example. I have bought a few good themes there, but look how lopsided the catalog is, because all the designers are making personal portfolio sites I guess, and that ends up being what they sell.

I just bought Thesis myself, and love it. It's not sexy, but probably the most simple, elegant, and clean theme I've used. I don't even want to change it at all.

I use Woo themes for the sites I build and sell. I've got developer licenses for quite a few more, but I like Woo the best. It's really worth it to buy a good theme to me. I got very tired of looking through free themes and never finding what I wanted.

Checkout Elegant themes. They are almost free. I have yet to come across word press theme service that offer you much for so little money.

      To the OP

You are quite right about the quality of wordpress themes

      They are rubbish.

Unfortunately the paid for themes are only a little bit better. They never really "scratch where I itch". They always just miss the mark.

      So...........

You have to edit them to make them look like you want.
Hours of struggling with weird php and css which is the very thing you are trying to avoid.

But the whole point of wordpress is to make it easy, right?

This is why many site builders still use html based websites. We can get them looking the way we want them to.

      Good luck in your search

  • IF all you worry about is the content, then the standard theme should be all you need.

remember, wordpress was a blog software first, a cms second and then people discovered that you can make simple websites with it and that made it useful for IM purposes.

I also agree with that sentiment, though sometimes you can spend hours searching for something that meets your needs.

I found one free theme out of thousands that actually fit my MMAblog. Its sort of a Japanese theme set up so it works for something related to martial arts. As it relates to my other niches I can’t find anything that fits or is even in the ballpark when it comes to free themes but you get what you pay for I suppose.

  • mainly the graphics is what will make a certain type of theme.
if you want a soccer theme, you would use soccer balls and green grass.
If you want a health theme, put health related images on it,
    etc. etc.

what makes one "theme" "suck" and another one not?

I have never seen a theme that I thought "sucked". I look for those that I like the colors/graphics, etc.

When I first sought out to work with WordPress Themes, I ran into two major issues that many reading this can relate to:

      1. Not the design I wanted
      2. I was unfamiliar with the coding to customize themes.

Therefore, I came up with a solution which was to go ahead and buy two WordPress frameworks (Headway and Thesis).

I then spent some time learning WordPress and how the foundations works; from page structuring, seo, plug-ins, posts, pages, etc.

Next, I decided to go ahead with Headway Themes first so I could customize my own site and make them look, feel and navigate however I wanted them to with their Visual Editor.

An example of a site I created from scratch in a few hours using the Headway Themes framework for Wordpress is at Website Video Marketing Creation Tips, Resources and Tools.

I then decided on getting Thesis for any "site development" that was out of my league for other projects, such as html interactive sites where I draw everything out in google docs and then collaborate with my site developer who is a Thesis editor.

It **seems** Headway can do what the site developer does in Thesis with the html functions and hooks, but since he works with Thesis, I keep it that way while in development.

This was the best solution for me because it allows me to create WordPress pages and posts myself with visual ease and convey what is out of my league easily as well.

      All the best,
      Scott

Like already mentioned, the new WP3 has a design built-in with a custom header, which means you can change it within the wp dashboard. You can also look for others using the tag "custom header".

And if you want a free and easy header maker try XHeaderPro. It comes with premade header templates, or it's easy to make your own using pics from a stock photo site.

Well, depends on what we wanna do with wordpress themes. I find that you can just delete certain things off side bar or any other parts of the themes to easily customize it for your own use.

I usually just start by looking for a theme with the kind of look I want and edit the images and php code to suit my use.
