Question in selling Amazon products

Hey guys,

Here's the situation, for example I am ranking #1 for the keyword "blue widgets" beneath Amazon (#2) which is selling the same line of blue widget products.

Is it good to monetize your site via Amazon selling the same line of "blue widget" items? Or would you rather find another related long tail keyword phrase wherein there is no Amazon competition?

Thanks!

I would just put an Amazon affiliate link. Remember, if someone clicks your link then anything they buy at Amazon that day is credited to you. Plus, you've already done the work of ranking for it, so why not try just adding anchor links before you spend the time looking for a new product?

Thanks. How about if Amazon is a notch above you would you still advertise the same product? I'm just wondering if the Amazon competition (or other shopping sites) will affect my conversion in the end since I'm selling the same product.

It might well be possible to rank higher than Amazon if you build backlinks to your site, as a lot of their individual product pages don't have many. Also you could add in extra value stuff like reviews, making sure your description shows this, to make people more likely to click on your site.
But then again you might find a variation on the keyword that gets to the top easier - one of these things that you won't know will work till you test it out.

Some people aren't ready to buy yet and they won't go directly to the Amazon site. Give the people what the amazon page is lacking. Give them a reason to come to you first.

Yes, I would still advertise the same product - but in a different way. If you can make video reviews of a blue widget, then tap into the youtube market, water mark the video and provide a link back to your site in the video description.

From there, maybe sign up on a tubemogul account, and blast that review video out to a dozen different video hosting sites.

Having targeted keywords on sites like break, metacafe, dailymotion,,,, will help you gain more pages in the search engines.

    Couple of quick notes:

1 - You can actually outrank the Amazon site by building some solid backlinks to your website/webpage as mentioned by Lynn

2 - Amazon's webpage titles and description that shows up in the search engines are always plain because usually it is the product name and some other boring information. What helps them get clicks is the fact it is Amazon.

You on the other hand are not restricted to using a boring page title and description so make sure to add some sizzle when building your meta tages and that will capture people's attention so they end up clicking on your link instead of the Amazon link.

    Respectfully,
    Tim

You can tell the link is working when you click on the link and see your affilifate id in the link.

If you are ranking that well for "blue widgets" have you thought about finding another affiliate merchant who also pays commission for "blue widgets" other than Amazon? One who may have a longer cookie life and higher percentage commission/sale?

      Good Luck.

Yes, I thought of that as well. I've used offervault.com as well as google "product-name affiliate". However I only saw the best offer at Amazon thus, so far that is my best option.

I am not using the Amazon widget and instead use text links and embedded links to some images. I've read that Amazon widgets don't convert much but would you still put it on the page?

Thank you for all the suggestions.

Most people are well aware of Amazon and if they search keywords on
Google there's a good chance they're looking for independent reviews
before they make a buying decision. So you have a chance to give them
          what they search for.

          cheers
