Google Content Network, Most Pointless Change Ever

Hi,

I've just logged into my Adwords account and an announcement popped up, this is what is said.

New! The Content Network is now the Display Network
The Google Content Network has a new name: the Google Display Network. You can use the Google Display Network to show text, image, video, and rich media ads across YouTube, Google properties, and display partners.

I wonder why the name change?

I think they changed the name because the Content Network has been thought of as a waste for many years by most experienced Adwords users and in the process, I think Google wants to shake that perception.

When I met with the Google Content Network Team in Nov. at Adtech on NY, they eluded to the fact that big changes were coming. When I saw the name change, it made me think about some of the statements they made at that time and it all made sense.

Google has done a tremendous job recently with making the Content Network a better quality product.

I think the name change is to solidify the perception that the Content Network is now a more viable product and they are anticipating the future of it being their main advertising revenue driver replacing Search.

At least that is what I gathered from conversations I had at the Adtech event. They expect the Content Network to eventually be their flagship product.

That is why they bought Youtube, that is why they wanted to get into social media, and now they are really bullish on mobile.

All of these elements will drive advertising revenue within the Content Network.

Think about it and it makes more sense.

Hmm, pointless enough you decided to log into the Warrior Forum and create a new thread telling us that the Content Network is now the Display Network?

It doens't matter what they call it. Until they do something about the massive amount of click fraud, I'm still not going to use it.

Google also shows ads in Adwords/Adsense format that don't originate 100% from within the Adwords system. That might have something to do with the name change. I think the "big changes" that Tommie referred to had a lot more to do with that than a simple name change. Frankly, I don't think such a minor name change warrants more than a passing notice, but the fact that Google has expanded into taking ads (and revenue) from sources outside of Adwords and running those ads within the Adsense framework was very big news for Google as a company in 2010.

I'm not up on the Content network at all but was thinking about trying it. People have been teaching to run image ads inside the content network and get very cheap clicks (.02-.05) I dont know if it is true but I would think thats a factor. Google seems to want everyone to pay out the a** for clicks. You have Perry Marshal saying that $1 a click is going to be the standard or something like that. All you will have on Adwords is the corpy types with deep pockets. I guess that what Google wants, nothing but boring coporate ads.
