Examining Your Article Competition....

Hello Warriors,

When your picking your keywords, what do you look for to know you can rank on the first page with an ezine article? What do you look for in your competition?

For myself, I typically choose keywords with less than 50k in "quotations". After I have these keywords, I narrow it down by going to the first page to see what kind of sites are on the first page.

If, on the first page, I see a web 2.0 property(squidoo lense, blogger blog, etc), or another article from ezine, I give myself the automatic greenlight.

So, what do you guys look for when contemplating keywords used for articles?

    Yeah that is pretty much what I do when targeting those long tail keywords. I do check the allintitle: as well.

    As for analyzing the competition I check the page rank as well as the backlinks then determine whether i can rank for that particular keyword.

    I usually pick a keyword that is high volume then i write an article with the keyword around it. It really depends what works for you.

      I think just looking for "high volume keywords" is shooting in the dark. You should always be looking into the first page competition as well as targeting your specified numbers.

    I think you're on the right track with your parameters, although 50K competition is at the extreme high end for me. I would only mess with that much competition if I were trying to break into a highly competitive market and didn't necessarily need to have immediate results.

    If your competition numbers are below 5000 for exact match and there are other user sites such as article directories, forums or free blogs on the first page you can usually take it to the bank if you can get a keyword optimized domain name. Of course you also want enough daily searches to make it worthwhile. I'll do anything with over 1K per day although admittedly I try harder if the daily searches are greater than 3000.

    Another option is that if an actual exact match keyword optimized domain name is unavailable you could go the free blog route, where that same keyword might be available.
