If I were to create a search engine, would I earn more money that creating a website?

I'm thinking of creating a search engine cause I've heard you earn way more money off of it instead of a blog or website in general. How would I go about creating a search engine and earning money off of it?

Search engines are difficult to succeed with. I'm not saying you can't but consider how your search engine will be different. If it's based on google, yahoo, bing, whatever there probably isn't much point. How will you get traffic to it?

Websites allow you to choose from zillions of topics and then specialize. While search engines might seem like a good way to go, many have gone under shortly after launch, it will be a difficult road. But I'm not saying it's impossible. Anything can be done, just some things are more work than others.

    Doris,

This is not a good idea. You should build an affiliate blog instead. You should be making money probably by the end of the day.

P.S. To everyone who is not Doris: this is a joke - 2 posts ever, both thread starters, one of which asking why he/she is not yet making money on a one day old blog. I call shenanigans.

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

I'm with Colin on this one. I smell a troll.

I would like to second on this. Otherwise, create a personal blog and then build your brand from there where you share about both your experiences, things you learn and also your expertise to "help" people. Plus, you could include your affiliate offers there worth sharing to your readers.

That way, you could earn money in the shortest period of time and you'll just enjoy every part of it rather than learning through all the process of attacking Google for instance.

If you want to develop your own search engine you can take a look look.com, ask.com, sky.com for reference.

Can you be better than Google, Yahoo etc.? Looking forward to use your engine in a couple of years.

You cannot earn money from any type of site you don’t know how to build or manage it… you can only earn money from a site you can understand yourself and maintain easily (unless you have the kind of money to outsource it all).
That is why so many people start blogs: they are more manageable. Maybe it will take time until it makes you good money, maybe you will need to create dozens of blogs until you find a good niche; but it will pay off, eventually, if you keep it simple (meaning: don't spend more than you earn). Post one good and unique article/comment off your blog with a link to it, and one article inside your blog every week or twice a week. You will slowly see results.

You can also build a niche targeted search engine / directory... it makes more sense than competing head to head with Google.

Edit: In any case, you can start off with a php script you buy + domain name + good web hosting

If you really want to go down this path, then k-search is the script that i used for my meta search engine, its pretty good though it does cost a few $$. As with any kind of site you have to:

      1. Find a way of getting people to know about it (comment on blogs about alternative search engines, write articles)
      2. Make it easy to use and have a different slant from the rest (use your imagination!)
      3. Find a way of monitizing it (ads)

      I hope this helps.

You could try to build vertical search portals, such as YouTube for video search, Amazon for online product search, etc.
