What happens after Paypal limits your account?

For 10 years I haven't had a problem with paypal. Today they limited my account "To Protect Me" they claim. To remove the limits they want copies of my photo ID, SS card and a recent copy of a utility bill with my name and address on it. I have no problem faxing them a copy of my passport and SS card but as a travelling photographer living overseas for the last six years I can't produce a utility bill as I no longer have a permanent physical address. Luckily my account can still receive payments for my digital goods but I can't spend or withdraw any of it. Does anyone know what would happen if I just continue to do business as usual and wait out 180 days? I understand that the money frozen in my account now can then be transferred to my bank account but what about the money I earn from now until then?

Regards,
Steve

Weren't you given an option to add another credit card? Paypal limited my account a few weeks ago since I was out of the country and logged in to my account then did a couple of a transactions. I was asked to add another credit card and to upload proofs of billing. I just added another card then that was it.

As for the money you'd be able to receive them after 180 days. But I think it would be better if you just remove the limitation for your account. maybe they could just accept the ss and the passport?

I too live overseas and had problems with a utility bill. They accepted a credit card statement sent to my address here. One fly in the ointment, though, was that my credit card statement just had my initial and not my full name, so I had to contact Visa and ask them to change this (which at first they refused to do!!).

All was good in the end, though.

PS. Someone I know did not get his money after 180 days. His account was terminated.

I just got off the phone with paypal. Seems what triggered the limitation was I requested a new debit card last week and requested it be sent to an address different from the one I had when I opened my account all those years ago. They said to have my bank fax them documentation that the address I gave them is connected to my account and that should take care of the problem!

Thanks for posting what the final reason for them limiting your account. Too many people get on here with the horror stories about PayPal but in the end it's usually something that is easily fixed.

With so many scams going on now days, it looks like the reason they flagged your account was valid and meant to protect you.

Glad you got it sorted out.

      Thanks,

      John

Yes they were very understanding and easy to deal with and were simply doing their job. I have been using them for 10 years now and this was the only time they placed a limitation on my account. And I was still able to carry on my online sales as the limitation was only designed to prevent funds from being illegally siphoned from my account. Good on them for protecting their customers. I guess I panicked at first due to reading many of the horror stories on this forum.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Well I am glad that you sorted that out. So if & when that happens to me I shall know why and what to do about it.
