Warriors - they're waiting for YOU to show up and lead them

Fellow Warriors,

A couple days ago I posted a poll asking people to share what monthly income level they are aiming to reach through IM. Over 70% of poll responders chose the top option, which was listed as $10,000+ per month of income.

Several people commented that their monthly income goals were much higher than 10k per month, although the poll was really designed for newer folks.

Regardless, based on the overwhelming number of people who clearly want to make a significant 5 or even 6 figure monthly income through IM, I was left with the following question in my mind:

If people truly want to earn that level of income, why are most here playing so SMALL?

If you look around you'll see it's true. Look at the majority of the dialogue here, heck even the majority of WSO's here. People are selling themselves short at every turn.

Instead of using our God-given gifts, skills and talents to make the difference we know we can make for customers, our default is often to find another marketer's product to affiliate market because it's "easier".

Instead of digging deep into the real wants and needs of a niche, our default is often to create surface-level "solutions" that look and smell like they will make a difference, but often fall way short of providing any serious help.

Instead of playing big by charging what we're really worth and providing far greater value to a smaller group of dedicated customers, our default is often to charge much less and take the typical mass-market approach.

I'm certainly guilty of these behaviors as well.

To my thinking this goes even further and has everything to do with self-worth. In other words, do you feel you truly have something valuable to offer your customers? If not I guarantee you the behaviors above - or ones like them - are present in your business.

This also has to do with what you believe YOU deserve. Even if you say you are aiming for $10K, $20K, $50K, $100K or more per month....do you truly feel you *deserve* to make that much?

I hope the answer is "yes" for you because it should be. Yet the ultimate proof as to whether we believe this for ourselves can be seen in our behaviors toward our business and our customers.

We must acknowledge there is a prevailing belief system that says you have to get to point A before you can get to point B, C or D.

I'm here to tell you that this thinking is nothing more than societal conditioning. It is only true if one decides it's true.

We chide the gurus because their massive success is 'proof' they are "opportunist" and "greedy". But the truth is their massive success is a direct result of giving up beliefs. The reason for their success is they've given up the belief that you have to go from point A to B to C to D.

They've done what every successful person ultimately does: they've removed self-imposed limitations.

When this happens the sky is the limit. When this happens you don't have to just take steps anymore, you begin taking massive leaps.

Here's the bottom line:

There is a group of customers out there waiting for YOU to show up and lead them.

They need your leadership. They need your gifts. They are the perfect audience to benefit from your skills, your talents, your guidance.

Above all else they need you to play BIG and not small.

Go forth and lead them. Yes, right now. They're waiting for you.

Best regards,
Ken

Great post. Unfortunately, I can think of one main reason why people won't get of their arses and lead. Wan't to know my take on this?

They don't have the right mental attitude to begin with.

You can look at a guy like David Deangelo.

He's a good example of a guy that not only has a great mental attitude, but he teaches other men how to develop their own.

DD is a great internet marketer that spent many hours researching and getting to know just who is target market is. How to reach them, and from a recent interview with DavidD/Eben Pagan, what they are thinking about the very second they read the headline to your sales page.

What's more, you can draw some very interesting paralells between the people who WILL take the time to do research (inner game to the dating gurus) and those who focus on the get rich quick techniques.

The kinds of people who focus on the quick techniques usually don't last that long with their own business because they suffer from instant fix fobia. There are lots people in this forum that will fit that mentality more than others, but I think we all do this at one level or another.

Why? Because that's our nature as human beings.

The key to being successful at anything is being able to catch ourselves when we make mistakes, have the knowledge to understand it's not failure, and make the necessary course corrections, which are:
    • Knowing why we want to start an online business in the first place
    • Being able to do what you say you are going to do (plausible because it more of a charactor trait).
    • Giving credit, where credit is due
    • Understanding that knowlege isn't spit without a solid foundation to launch from and take action on ones ideas and asperations
    • Keeping your sense of humor about IM and not taking things so damn seriously (too many folks here right now, I think need to REALLY lighten up & start asking yourself the questions in your heads. Hint: expect an answer.
    • Never. And I mean never forget where you came from.

    ..just to name a few.

The last one simply means that when you DO get the foundation in place, when you've decided why your doing what you are doing, and you've made the decision to go for it, you stick with it with that never-say-die spirit you have.

Then, because of your 'inner IM game' you DO NOT disrespect the people that helped get you where you are. If you do, you're usually on your way back.

I think it's interesting to see people come and go. To see the forum's majority attitude shift, and watch some of those leaders simply leave for a while because they already know there's no sense trying to help people that don't have their foundation set.

"Self worth" is a good start. But inner strenth and self respect goes a lot deeper because in a sense, no matter what happens, you know things will be ok, and you don't settle for less.

An' dats all I gots to say 'bout dat

      Grant,

Fantastic insights. I certainly agree that the right mental attitude to begin with is critical.

And I loudly applaud your bullet point list. Bravo.

Ken, leading is scary. Not everybody is cut out for leadership. It means
taking responsibility not only for yourself but for others.

I don't consider myself a leader. If people come to me for help, I'll do my
best to help them, but I simply consider myself a hard worker who has made
a plan for success and sticks to it.

As much as I enjoy what I do, it's still just business. It's not like heading out
to A.C. and hitting the craps tables for a few hours. It's still work. And as
such, it's hard enough doing it for yourself without having the responsibility
of being a role model for others, even when that role is thrust upon us.

But like I said, leading is scary. It's a lot easier and safer to be a follower.

You know what Steven, you're absolutely correct in saying that a common perception held by many is that leadership is scary.

But in the very next breath I will say this to those who operate with that mentality:

It's an unacceptable COP-OUT. If you aren't willing to lead your customers in some way you should get your butt out of IM immediately.

Heck Steven, you said it yourself. You don't consider yourself a leader, yet you've made plans and you stick to them. Guess what? THAT is leading. In fact the way you lead is often the most effective way - by example.

Perhaps best of all, you're willing to stand up and share. You share your successes, your failures, your wins, your losses...you share it all. Again, that's leading.

I'll go so far as to say that ONLY people in this industry who thrive are leaders.

I don't care if you're a copywriter, a ghost writer, an affiliate marketer or an IM guru. If you're thriving it's because you're leading in some way (remember, not all leadership looks the same).

Ultimately leadership comes down to one simple thing - a willingness to make a true difference for others. This doesn't require a loud voice or a big stick. Just a commitment to something greater than yourself.
