Ask Lee McIntyre about that one. He started with the idea of selling t-shirts online and now makes millions. (but not with t-shirts)

I'm making money online selling t-shirts, but it's not much money. I've found that t-shirts are such low-profit products that you have to really be selling a lot of volume to make real money with it. I mean, you might have 100% markup or more on a shirt, but even then you're only making $10 per shirt.

One thing I found that helps startup tshirt companies is getting shirts printed on demand. I'm not a fan of the digital printing sites like cafepress or zazzle, but if you can find a company that does actual SCREEN PRINTING on demand, then you can get your business automated while limiting your startup costs.

Just do a search for "on demand screen printing" or something like that and you'll find the service.

You can make money, but IMO only if you focus on a niche. Third party sites like CafePress, Zazzle etc.. are more expensive BUT the overhead is lower because you don't have physical inventory.

Price is not a significant factor in selling t-shirts. If someone needs a cheap t-shirt, they can go to a big box store. Customers buy t-shirts online because the design is super-cool and amazing and they just have to have it. Your task is to get your t-shirts in front of people who will love the design.

I agree with those who said that it's hard to make money with t-shirts. Cafepress has a forum with a lot of good marketing advice for sellers (you don't have to join to view the forum).

I designed some stuff and set it up on Zazzle a while back. I still get a sale rolling in every once in a while, but it's hardly worth focusing my energy on.

I always wanted to start a t-shirt company. I hear it's hard, though.

  • When you first get started use the direct printers like CafePress. Then once you increase in profits then you can buy in bulk where you will make profits.
