Id like to know about optimizing videos for search and getting more views. elements of a typically successful viral video & how to adapt videos to local businesses , a dentist for example and meke them appeal to the youtube crowd without loosing the message and traffic techniques generally.

The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to "virality" is that you don't want it be be generally viral. You want it to be specifically viral.

YouTube - startlearningjoomla's Channel

This is one of my first commercially successful videos on YouTube. It ranks organically #2 in YouTube for the most competitive keywords in the Joomla niche, and if I recall correctly it shows up #3 for just Joomla.

No one knows about us unless they are looking for Joomla training. But we like it that way. Specific virality over general wins hands down.

Use the same rules as you would in a blog post or a new page of your website. Keyword research, proper titles, good solid content, and don't leave the viewer guessing as to what you are going to talk about. Tell THEM!

Tags are your best friend right now in YouTube. Remember when metatags were the "in thing?" on Google? Well Google owns YouTube and history is repeating itself.

It's not so much about super-specific-awesome-tacular keywords on YouTube. It's about understanding your audience.

Search something like... Shoes into Google. Now do it on YouTube... Very different eh? Yeah I love Kelly.... SHOES! Let's get some SHOES!

Once you've got your videos all SEO'd up... Spread it around. Videos are like cookies. Delicious, warm, and totally sweet. So... Offer it to people who talk to YOUR target market. Dentists deal with a specific farm radius so you want to make sure to steer keywords towards local areas. Videos also have a feature that you can specify WHERE the video was made... or intended to be viewed.

This sits in the realm of video editing. I use Premiere Pro CS4. I know super geek software. But most editing platforms should be able to do it. That is actually a great idea for a video... THANKS! I will get back to you on that Kieron.

I have always wondered about the power of video marketing for most people, off course there are some videos that are mega successful, but on average if you have a link in a good video how much click throughs do you get?

I know there are a lot of viral adverts for things that the video seems in no way related to, is it just a case of creating a thought provoking or amazing video and putting a link for anything in it?

This works just like page rank. The more people that are looking at the link provided by the author the more people will click through.

For example. The biggest social media site that has the greatest click through to a video is Twitter. Because of the intimacy created there.

I tell you about that to tell you this. If you have appropriately tagged video on YouTube with specific keywords sprinkled with a few broader keywords you will get traffic to the video. If the videos content is congruent with the title and keywords used in the tags the url you mention in the video will get traffic. If the url is congruent with the content, title, and keywords then you up your chances greatly. I always get immediate traffic from my videos to my website every time I upload a video. The market, competition, and how well I position myself depends on the intensity of traffic I get. But needless to say, my traffic grows every time I upload a new video.

Now it takes time to move up in rankings in YouTube. Just like Google.... BUT it doesn't take as LONG. If you want to go pure organic and not use PPV, then you are going to have to spread your video around to others who WANT to see it... IE: keyword and competition research. Learn how your competition interacts with the market. Pay attention to how your audience acts and reacts to the dialog. Most of the time you simply need to position yourself properly, understand your product, and your audience, and the rest follows suit.

A tip? Start friending your competitions subscribers. If your competition doesn't have many friends and subscribers, then you are too specific... go broader and make your own niche within the YouTube space.

Yes that is a way to do it, and yes it is a more advanced topic. I have been trying to figure out a cheap or free way to do it.

Camtasia can do it, though it is a very fickle editing platform, and I do it all the time with Premiere Pro. (basic layer approach)

I did it with this video since I didn't have video of this guy talking.


I took the audio he recorded, edited that, used a nice looking background as my basic background, used an image from his Facebook profile as the thumbnail and used title sequences for all of the text.

You can do the same with the video and create a basic PIP by shrinking the video layer itself. It works well if all that is there is your talking head.

If you want a full video of you standing there in front of a green screen and you want your whole body showing, then yes, it would be a more advanced technique, but I also don't want to make people think they need to over produce either.

The biggest thing is having as high of quality of audio as possible. Think of it as a podcast with pictures.

I used traffic geyser when I first started. It's great! But I would recommend using TubeMogul first to get your feet wet in the area of distribution. It can be a strange beast and the amount of initial feedback you get will be HUGE.

When you've got your bearings with TubeMogul then move on to Traffic Geyser.

It can do very well with getting good solid targeted traffic and make Google think twice about overlooking your content.

Great question Eva. I create a separate account put my own information of what I think should be on there, and it usually gets their attention and they have me change certain aspects of the channel... SEO, Titles, Playlists etc.

Video gets peoples attention better than any other way I have seen. Statistics are nice, but when I get an immediate response 5, 10, 20 minutes later. I KNOW they are excited about what I am doing.

Separate accounts are very important. It tells YouTube and even Google that this is the only subject this channel is talking about. I have had videos featured by YouTube because I kept solid specificity in the channel. Viewers really appreciate it too.

I am sure there are books out there that explain that stuff and why, but I like getting my hands dirty and testing each piece so I know it for sure.

I've got a couple of YouTube questions which I'm hoping you can answer.

Firstly, do YouTube channels or videos get page rank the same way that web sites do i.e. from backlinks etc or is there any other way to increase the PR of a YouTube channel? And what's the advantage in having a channel with high PR?

How does YouTube search work? I understand it's based on video title, description etc, but how much influence does the number of subscribers, comments, views etc have on the search results? Does the channel PR influence this?

Also, sometimes when I search in google for something, YouTube videos appear on the first page search results. Does google determine which videos it displays, or does it source this information from YouTube?

Do you have any thoughts on Sony Vegas. I'm setting up to start using videos and I have Sony Vegas, but haven't used it yet. I hoping it can handle green screen editing.

Also, after searching for a camera that has an external mic input, I finally found the Kodak Zi8, but haven't picked it up yet. I noticed Maverick mentioned it. I know price is not always an indicator of quality, but I was (pleasantly) surprised at the price. Any downsides with it? And, I was considering pairing it with a wireless mic, but haven't really found any info on that either positive or negative.

Sony Vegas is very similar to Pinnacle. Pinnacle was actually one of the first video editing programs I used till I got the CS4 Master Suite. Pinnacle was great for awhile but it is buggy. Sony Vegas is suppose to be better, and I am sure it is.

I the post production world people use Final Cut Pro Version. (latest) Any forum like creative cow will have nothing but Final Cut guys. After Effects is the only Adobe Program that is used. The reason why make sense, but in a few years really high quality video editing will be even MORE accessible and we will all have to kick it up a notch. YouTube is already showing 1080p video without any signs of slowing... so yeah... crazy high def.

External mics are another thing all together. I am gonna be honest. I need to brush up on mics. There are lots of options... so much so it can make ya kinda dizzy. The production side of things can be a rabbit hole you can't get out of... But a fun rabbit hole depending on how much you dig video.

I will do some digging and report back here, but I am sure there are a lot of people here who have messed with more of the audio portion. I used a $100 Snowball USB Condenser Mic. I find a nice quiet room or record in a closet, or even car in the garage. All decent semi-controlled places.

I am playing with my Mikey. A mic that attaches to a iphone/ipod. If you switch it to airplane mode you don't get as much electrical noise. (some people can hear it. I can't... whatev) The Mikey does a great job, and it is by Blue, and they are top notch when it comes to sound quality. I got mine on Amazon for $50. You can buy it at a retail store like Musicans Friend or Guitar Center for $75.

Are there any strategies available for communicating directly with people who have subscribed to your channel? I have 1500 subscribers to my channel - but have no idea how many of these subscribers are on my 'list.'

Any thoughts?

Great Question Paul,

YouTube will remind your subscribers through email a few times a month of videos that you have new videos. For some reason you can send messages to friends on YouTube, but not subscribers.... odd.

1500 subscribers is not easy for many niches. Congratulations on that btw! I would recommend that you make a video specifically for the subscribers. It can be something like... THANK YOU FOR 1500 subscribers. It give you a chance to really reconnect with your audience and lets you as for feed back as well as make a solid call to action to go to the site and register if they haven't already.

Or offer information of value to your audience. You would know better than me.

Do you have some kind of ebook or something? Any new free awesome information you can offer them? If so you can work that in. That way you can get your registration rate on your site as high as your subscription rate on YouTube.

Do you know anything about the 'bulletin' feature. If I read it right it's supposed to allow you to post a bulletin that appears on the home channels of your friends and subscribers - but whenever I've posted a bulletin I've never seen it come up anywhere else?

Do you recommend anything like automatic Friend Adder (forget what the software is called). One of my rivals has 15,000 subscribers - I thought about using Friend Adder to boost my subscription rate?

Or is that spammy?

Bulletins don't seem to do much as I see it. I have yet to see anything I post in bulletins show up anywhere but on my channel. If it's suppose to show up anywhere else it's news to me. The only thing I can think of is if it connects to Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Auto Friending programs are fine as long as you read the T&C's of YouTube. They say you can't message, friend, comment, etc. more than humanly possible. As long as you follow THOSE guidelines you are fine. Be extra careful though. You don't want to upset YouTube and get your account banned. The few times I have used any auto friending program I made SURE they were people I would have friended already and I made sure I followed the T&C's.

Plus friending is good for your channel if you don't try to get every single person on YouTube on board. Be sure you really understand who your audience is. Think about relative virality over general virality. You want everyone in your niche to know you and subscribe... but not EVERYONE else.

What video sites have some form of revenue sharing, like what youtube has through their partner program?

Break.com has a payment program, but its very limited. And I think it only applies of your video makes it to the home page.

I'am looking for something where I can put my own banners in the video, or link the video with my google adsense account.

This is YouTubes Video Targeting Tool. It gives you the opportunity to put an ad to your website in other peoples videos.

There is no such thing as putting adsense in your videos unless you are invited to be a partner with YouTube. There is viddler, and metacafe that have adsharing. Also E-How does the same thing. Check those out.

Ryan I will PM you shortly about Promoted Videos on YouTube. It works like charm, but it is a totally different animal. If you are familiar with PPC then you are way ahead of the game. I would recommend brushing up on it too.
