Moving site hosted at GoDaddy to Hostgator

Hi Guys

I'm being really thick!!! I have a site at GoDaddy but I want to host it now at Hostgator. I already have another site hosted there on the 'baby' account which says I can host unlimited domains there. However, the stupid things is where the bl**dy hell is the login on the hostgator site??? I've looked through the sitemap but nothing. I know once it's installed you go to cpanel but until my site is hosted there, I can see where you go to specify the name server???? Help!!

Cheers,
Phil

Since your currently hosting on GoDaddy, is that where you BOUGHT the domain?

If so, you change your wesite information on GoDaddy by changing the NS information. It automatically will be switched to HostGator.

Where ever you purchase your domain is where you change Name Servers.

No, that's what I mean, I can't do that because my site isn't hosted yet at hostgator, GoDaddy doesn't have the /cpanel thing, I can only do that ONCE it's moved there. So where can I go / log in within hostgator to tell it which domain I want hosted there, if I go to "host domain" then it's going to try and charge me for a new account.

Have you set up the website in your HostGator WHM ?

      Try this:

      Go to www.YourHostGatorResellerAccountURL.com/WHM

Go down to the "Packages" tab and click "Create new Package"

Set up the parameters of a standard website you'd like hosted in your reseller hosting account with HostGator.

Go back to the WHM, go to the "Account Functions" tab and click the "Create a New Account"

Enter the domain you want hosted on HostGator, and specify a username/password to log into your WHM/Cpanel with

You're done. Edit your account as normal through Cpanel.

Also, if your account was originally created with GoDaddy, you'll need to change your nameservers THERE to be ns1.yourreselleraccount.com ns2.yourreselleraccount.com

Hope this helps. If not, PM me and I can try to help you further.

EDIT: Just saw what Peter said. I agree, HostGator support is great. They can get you up and running in no time if we can't help you.

Ah, thanks Pete, that sounds right. So how do I find out the NS1 / NS2 server info for hostgator to tell GoDaddy where to move it to??

GIve HostGator a shout via Email, and you should have your answer in an hour or two. They've always been very prompt at answering mine.

OR.. Go to the HostGator main site and click on Live Help. A techie can give you the information in a matter of minutes.

Ok Pete, maybe I'll email them then. It just seems weird that there isn't a place where I login to the site with a user name and password, I know you can do this with your existing site via cpanel but if you are moving one then it's different - very odd.

James - tried the yourdomain.com/whm/ thing but again just get a "page not found", I assume that works once your site is already at hostgator??

      Oh, no no, sorry.

I meant YOUR HostGator url. You said you already have a reseller account with hostgator, right? You need to set up a new account from within your current reseller account WHM.

So if your current hostgator URL is www.philbobaggins.com and your new site is www.philsnewsite.com then you need to go to www.philbobaggins.com/whm and set up www.philsnewsite.com from WITHIN that account.

Ok mate, I'll give that a go. Thanks very much for your help

    Phil,
You need to add this new domain to your account at hostgator in your cpanel (addon Domains). Once you've added it you can upload your website into this domain in file manager or by ftping it.

He said in the OP that he had a 'baby' account. That isn't a reseller account, and /whm won't work.

If you have an account already set up at HostGator (and you do, you said you had a baby account), log into your cPanel from the domain that you set the account up under originally: http://domainname.com/cpanel or http://domainname.com:2082

Navigate to Addon Domains to add your other domain name.

NOTE: you must already have purchased the domain name from somewhere first. You'll also have to set the nameservers to the HostGator nameservers for your account. Those will be listed in your welcome email, or you can contact HostGator and they'll tell you which to use.

Ahh I see. I didn't realize "baby account" was a standard web hosting package.

    Hi Phil -

They don't have the classical login from the Home page like others. Since your using a shared IP plan (baby) you will be using the same DNS for the addon as you use for the original site.

To locate this info if you haven't saved it by copying it into a text file or just can't find the email they sent here's where to find it.

At Host Gator you login to pay your bill at - https://secure.hostgator.com/billing/

Across the top of the page you will see a row of Tabs. Mouse over "My Sites"
and it will expand. Click on - Domain. You will see the domain name you currently have hosted with them for your baby account. Right after the domain you will find a [?]. Click on the - ?. That gives you a whois on the domain name you are already using on Host Gator. You will see the Name Servers you are using now. These are the Name Servers you will enter at GoDaddy in your domain manager for your the domain name your moving. Since it's an addon domain the name servers will be the same.

Also if GoDaddy is the registrar for the site that is already on Host Gator you can see the name servers for that domain in the domain manager and just input them into the name server info for domain name of the site your moving to Host Gator as an addon.

I had the same reaction yesterday Phil. Signed up for the first time at hostgator and then couldn't for the life of me find the login. I checked the sitemap too. Finally had to wait until I got my welcome email before I could do anything.

Their email said I had to go to the IP address/cpanel - don't see why they can't have a login on the site.
