Be careful with domain registration

I read somewhere in the forum (some guys promoting a programme called 'Profit Instruments') that one of the ways to get to the top of search engine is to register a domain that is close to the name of the product. For example if you are trying to promote Sony Bravia 353535, then register a domain with the name sonybravia353535.com with the title and description close to the Sony main site.

DON'T do it.

I have received letters from lawyers who will go all the way to sue you for copyright issues. They will sent you hard copies of your webpages plus statistics of your site to show you the number of visitors that went to your site. You will then have to engage your own lawyer to write to them (which will cost you more than the earnings from that site).

If you think by telling them you are not aware of copyright laws and you are just a high school kid working part time for your school fees will help, you are wrong. The kinds of letters you will get from the lawyers will scare the **** out of you.

And what are you going to make out of the affiliate site selling TVs? $14000 per month? You got to be kidding! More like $140 per month.

Do it the proper way, you might have lesser traffic but you can sleep better at night. Don't take risk with copyright laws. I thought my site was ok when 5 years past without any issues. But when i receive the lawyers letters, I realised how much i wasted building the site with someone else's name in it.

And who says you cannot rank well with other ordinary names?

Good advise. What I have done to avoid that problem is to register the domain atgreatsavings.com and then use several subdomains like
    cordlessmike.atgreatsavings.com
    cfmemory.atgreatsavings.com
    homemadestuff.atgreatsavings.com and so on...

It is not copyright problems so much as trademark

An interesting case is how Mike Filsaime got hold of MikeFilsaimeSucks.com that was ranking for his name, and someone was trying to profit from it.

It is amazing how many people use WordPress in domains not realising that in the past Automattic have gone after people as well.

Trademark holders have to defend their trademark, and lawyers are retained to do it so they will come after you.
