Need help on 301 permanent redirect

Hello fellow warrior,

2 months ago, I did a 301 permanent redirect from non-www url to www version for my client's website, using the IIS method (they are on windows server)

Until today, the URL that ranked in google is still the non-www version, is it normal for google taking so long to detect the changes? anyone experience that?

Google last cached the website 7 hours ago, but the ranking page in Google is still non-www version.

Now my client is keep bugging me on the www version.
Anyone got any ideas? Any way to force it to change?

Did you set the preferred URL format in webmaster tools?
Have you actually tested that the 301 redirect actually works and sends the right headers?

      Hello Andy Beard,

      Thanks for your prompt reply.

I not yet set the preferred URL in webmaster tool, i thought setting the IIS / .htaccess will do. Going to do now.

I tested, when i load the mydomain.com, it will redirect to www.mydomain.com, so it should be correct. One quick question is, what is the "right headers" you are saying?

      Regards,
      Cheying

    For testing headers
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3829/ (firefox plugin)
Check Server Headers Tool - HTTP Status Codes Checker (online tool)

You need to be doing a 301 redirect

You also need to check different URLs, for instance

    hxxp://exampledomain.com
    hxxp://exampledomain.com/

    Those are all different

You should also clear up all internal linking that might be hard coded to the wrong version.

Weird, here is the result i got:

      Current Date and Time: 2010-06-28T01:39:46-0700
      User IP Address: 175.144.157.50

      #1 Server Response: http://mydomain.my
      The operation timed out

      What is the problem then?

That means there is something wrong with your redirects, maybe an infinite loop

    Hello Andy,

Thanks a lot for your answer. Can you please help me have a look on the site and shed me some light, please? I need it quite urgently, appreciate if you can help.

P/S: I tried to pm, but it seems like u turn it off, can we chat through skype? I won't use too much of your time, just give me some ideas on what's wrong and i will talk to my designer. Please...

I am available on Skype all the time, but here is the thing...

I have never even into an IIS server, let alone set up the redirects

Thus you could provide me with a URL in private, I could see the same header responses as you, but ultimately the only instruction I could give on how to set up the redirects correctly would be to search Google and find a suitable thread on somewhere like Webmaster World by someone I know I can trust.
