Two Offline Businesses That Seem To Be Popping Up Everywhere.......

In southern California, I spend a good chunk of my time in 3 counties, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Over the past year, more noticeably in the last 3 months, I've noticed a lot of these two types of businesses showing up:

1. We-Buy-Gold Type Store Fronts.

2. Web Consulting For Offline Businesses.

Now #2 didn't surprise me all that much just based on what I've seen in marketing forums and how often I get solicited by web consultants who want to help me with my SEO needs.

I know with the economy still being down and the price of gold continuing to set new highs that #1 would probably be a good business to be in, but I was surprised at how many I saw driving around yesterday. I did a lot of driving between Orange County and Los Angeles County yesterday meeting with clients and vendors and couldn't help notice the guys standing on the corner with the "we buy gold" signs.

Anyone else notice this where you live? And what else do you think is driving this?

I noticed the we buy gold stores here in New York City as well. Eventually the gazillion dollars the US government dumped on Wall St to save the financial system will devalue the dollar and create inflation. Gold is the place to be in anticipation of that happening.

I haven't really noticed the offline consultants here any more than normal. There have been SEO companies targeting the NY area for a long time before it became a trend amongst Internet Marketers.

I've noticed quite a few SEO companies popping up, and then quite a few clients/people on other forums complaining about bogues SEO providers who do not deliver.

What's driving it is twofold. The "we buy gold for cash" is marketed to the people getting hurt in the crunch right now. You see those commercials a lot on daytime TV. The only people watching the garbage on that is ladies at home with no job and possibly jewelry, and me.

Then if you listen to conservative talk radio, all those guys pitch the "buy gold and invest because prices blah blah blah".

One end of that business is feeding the other. The people underpaying you for the gold, and the people giving you less gold than you are paying for are most likely the same people, and if not, in cahoots.

They've been laying the groundwork for this for YEARS. I think the "we buy gold" guys have cropped up because the economic climate made the gold investment seem like an opportunity, all that radio advertising is now paying off, and there's a demand.

Problem is, MINING gold is too expensive. So basically, they just buy it off desperate people instead.

The gold stuff is everywhere in the UK.

It's because Gold prices have been going up and the US dollar going down - they make great margins buying gold.

I wrote about this in my investing in silver book recently.

Many people don't pay attention and if they get $50 for something they paid $50 for a few years ago they think they got a bargain - despite the gold probably being worth $100 now just based on its weight.

The web consulting stuff isn't that prolific here but there are thousands of SEO and web design companies. Every business I talk to gets calls every week trying to sell them online marketing or search positions.

I really appreciate the feedback gang. And what everyone has posted so far makes a lot of sense. I've noticed the "we-buy-gold" stores popping up even in nice neighborhoods. One of the owners told me that they are not immune to hard times. He had a guy pull up in a Porsche 911 with a bunch of jewelry because he was trying not to sell his car.

The traditional jewelry stores are getting killed. A few weeks ago, I was in the mall and I thought I'd get my watch cleaned in the jewelry store. I started talking with the owner and he said that business was terrible. He said he's been trying to keep the lights on by selling services instead. I was surprised because this was one of the wealthiest neighborhoods on Long Island.

Yeah, I imagine lots of luxury goods have to be suffering, especially when people are being reinforced that it was foolish overindulgence that led to the economic crisis. The true irony is that the foolish overindulgence is what actually drove the economy into its artificially prosperous state in the first place - it's responsible for both the rise and fall.

But I digress, I don't want to start an economics argument I can't hold up.

Another thing I find funny is how if you want me to buy your gold because our money is declining in value, why do you want my money for your gold? It's a cash grab, clearly. Because the truth is, since nothing is on any kind of gold standard anymore anyway, gold's not actually worth anything except as a manufacturing material.

As a "precious metal", its value is as artificial as the money people would use to buy your precious golden horde off of you. It's like investing in comic books. Sure that guidebook says it's worth X. But find someone to pay that price right now for it.

Anyways, yeah. We live in an information age, and people are still trading squishy, shiny dirt.

Good points Rod, I agree, here in San Diego, people are having these Gold Parties. Women and some men sell off their old Gold for cash and then the people selling it make money too, some pretty well I here.

Here in Chicago, there are tons of Gold shops and an increase in pawn shops as well. Many desperate people looking to get money however it comes.

I haven't really seen a rise in internet marketing service providers here although I do it myself. I'm always watchful to see newcomers though.

    Seeing this in UK everywhere.

Fortunate for me I am Bengali and my wife has loads of Indian Gold [South Asian Women love their Gold], we do not intend to sell since we would love to give to my Sons wife when he gets married [he's only 9 and it is customary to buy the gold for the future daughter in law ] but it would be a ridiculous price when he gets married to buy then.

Living an hour north of NYC, I've noticed quite a few more 'we buy gold' stores locally, however the web consulting for offline businesses hasn't really taken off. Maybe it's because it's quite slower and country-like up here, but many small businesses seem to be relying on traditional methods of marketing and advertising. Many of these businesses are from the pre-internet age and are still uneducated and intimidated by digital services, so I don't think we'll be seeing any businesses of the sort in the near future.

Although I have heard about many similar services being offered, the one that first comes to mind is 'Let's Get Social' from Ryan Diess. He offers a course with just about all the assistance you would need to get started with the help of a proven system.

I am in the offline market here in San Diego and doing very very well. My business is actually very focused on our target market and we really only take on certain types of clients and primarily for SEO work only. We are not trying to be the one stop shop that does everything under the sun.

I do see a lot of Gold stores around so that means they are probably making good money and could probably use my services as well. I actually hear more radio ads and commercials for this stuff more than actual store fronts.

Jewelry dealers, etc. have been in the gold buying business for a long time. I'm guessing the local guys are cashing in on the big advertising $ spent by Cash4Gold, etc. Given the economy and the increased awareness of there being a readily liquid "cash for gold market", the local guys stand to profit. I mean, who wouldn't want to deal with a local guy/gal face to face rather than mailing their gold into a faceless company you see on TV.

They have had gold parties here in the midwest for about 2 years. my wife hosted one the other day. She had 10 girls here at the house who brought their gold chains, earrings etc, anything gold. Anyways the gold dude about 25 years old drives up in a nice 2009 mercedes, walks to the door carrying a briefcase. Come in and chit chats with all the gals, pulls out his scale, magnet, etc and proceeds to offer the gals cash. He paid out $10,000 cash in $100's,$50's etc, and my wife got 10% of what he paid out, so she pocketed $1,000.00. This was a saturday, the day after gold had hit a record high. I would guess he probably had a pretty good payday. Said he had 2 more parties that day.......hmmmmmmm

          Hi Rod,

          We-Buy-Gold Type Store Fronts
Just my generalised/simplified opinion based on the situation as is probably perceived by the majority (in general) -

Banks are not safe for investing large amounts (they can go bust) and interest rates (gains) are at all time lows. Currency values are probably being manipulated and are all over the place. Some economies seem destined to crash, possibly hyperinflate. Shares are currently volatile and risky. Bricks and mortar values are generally regarded as artificially inflated to the point of bursting.

Traditional investments are wobbly and insecure.

Where is it safer to invest?

Gold prices (check the 5 or 20 year graph)

I also think that it's a good time to buy when people are desperate, like in a 'worldwide' economic downturn (pay them less than market value) - so this would motivate people to go into this business currently.

I think these people have reason to suspect that major economies will crash and that the consequences mean that currency is less safe than gold. On the dark side, it could also be a possible avenue for laundering.

          Hi Colin,

I'm not sure I understand your point -

Another thing I find funny is how if you want me to buy your gold because our money is declining in value, why do you want my money for your gold? It's a cash grab, clearly.
Desperate people who need money and have a small amount of gold aren't concerned about money declining in value - they're off to pay an urgent bill immediately. The people buying gold ARE paying more than they did in the past, so they can use this to entice sellers.

          Dave said -

They have had gold parties here in the midwest for about 2 years
How long ago was the first major recent crash/bailout?

No, I was talking then about the people who are selling gold to investors. I assume they are taking cash for that, right? The people selling whatever it is they melt grandma's jewelry into. The people buying that gold aren't buying it to keep -they're turning around and selling it into that other market.

Hope I explained it better - it wasn't a point really, just that I thought it was funny. "Your money is turning worthless so buy gold! We accept cash!"

Interesting you mention it and I have seen it.

In fact they set up stalls in our supermarkets offering to buy gold jewellry with cash.

This has been going on for some time and they have two employees on each of these stalls so you have to figure they're making some good profits from this scheme.

I guess gold always has a ready market so it could be as simple as buying enough in a day at the right price so you can make a healthy profit.

The promise of instant tax free cash in hand for people who really need the money or just want to offload some old jewellery to get some spending money is probably quite enticing.

          Kindest regards,

I've just noticed it here in Australia in our shopping centres (or shopping malls as I think you call them in the US). It's only started recently with these little booths popping up and people handing out little leaflets to people as they pass by seeing if they want to sell their gold.

Hmmm? So, it's spreading. Wonder if it will come here, too.

I can just imagine trying to hand out leaflets asking if people want to sell their gold. I'm quite sure one would get a visit from the Yakuza within the week, and it might not be a comfortable meeting over tea and biscuits.

Its the same in Ireland. Actually it has really caught my interest, as there is something being overlooked here.

Apparently the gold I bought from some gypsies a few weeks ago is worthless because...while it has all the properties of gold they cannot identify. Though it passed the resistance to acid and every other test, they say it must be worthless because you cannot dent it. It passed every test as gold, apart from its resistance to pressure.

Hell, in an attempt to outwit the gold people the gypsy's are producing an amalgam of metals here that should be worth far more than gold, and nobody has seen the value. Imagine gold that doesn't wear out, and nobody seems to care. I only mention it because although I have been trying to track down the makers I have so far failed. I have a few rings made of the stuff and have had them tested at the local university and nobody knows what it is. Its interesting if nothing else.

    Cheers,
