Is This Wrong?

I have been working with this company on their SEO and been doing a lot of keyword research on the products they carry. This one product they carry has a pretty large market, and it appears I have a pretty good chance of getting them listed first page for one of the main keywords in this niche. Along the way I have found numerous keywords where I can pick one and build a mini site on and probably do pretty well with. Is it wrong of me to do this? I wouldnt have found the niche if I wasnt working for them. I would not be competing directly with them. I dont know, just wondering what others thought and if they have been in this situation.

    I don't think it's wrong as long as you keep your promises to them and get THEM to the top, it's not wrong if you take another one of the remaining 9 spots available on the first page of Google.

    You can always use that for leverage and sell the leads you get from it or monetize any way you want.

    I'd love to hear everyone else's comments on this matter.

      Thanks for the input, even though it wouldnt be wrong, I dont think i would try to rank my own site on the same page that i would get theirs on. If I was to go through with it, it would be a separate keyword altogether, within the same niche, a micro niche.

        They would do it to you i'm sure. IM is a business and in every business there is competition. Why spend the rest of your life making them rich instead of worrying about you and your family. I say do it and if you have a good relationship just don't tell them your doing it. When you start making good money quit on a positive note. If they found you they will find someone else. Make yourself rich then worry about doing it for others. It sounds mean but that is life I don't think anyone would blame you for it.

    Whether it is right or wrong can only be answered by your ethics. Typically, if you have to ask, it is wrong. I have, however, seen plenty of cases where this occurred, and the mini site was then sold to the client. So, it may be a bit underhanded, but it is not at all unheard of.

    I wouldn't say it's wrong as long as you aren't trying to rank on the same pages that you are getting paid to put him on. I do think it would be highly unethical to compete with him in any way.

    I think the questions you have to ask yourself are - what would you do if you were in their position? Would you be mad if you found out what was going on? Would you hire you again?

    I doubt they will hire you to do anymore work for them in the future if they find out you do this. They will assume that you will end up doing this for every project they may send your way in the future. So you need to figure out what is in your best interest; to keep working in seo as you are or run with this idea.
