What GoDaddy Extras Are Actually Necessary?

Believe it or not, I have never used GoDaddy to purchase a domain.

Checking out their website, right after you search for your domain, they make a compelling case trying to sell you on a package for .info, .net, etc.....with huge savings for those packages....

Then, there appears to be a series of a ton of upsells....

Is it necessary to have all these additions to your 'domain'?

For example:

1) Certified ($2.99/year)
2) Private Registration Helps protect yourself from spam, scams, prying eyes and more by shielding your personal information from public view.
3) SSL Certificate ($24.99/year)
4) Drive Traffic To Your Website ($29.99/year)

...just to name a few....

Are these really even necessary? Do you get them added?

This site takes a simple domain purchase, and, by the time you are done, you could be spending in excess of a few $100/month....I guess it's good that they are providing options....but, they don't really even expound upon things like "Drive Traffic to Your Website"....

Personally I just buy the domain, using a discount coupon of course, and skip through all their extra sales pitches.

Whats going on battle (Navy here...we chatted before in he past)....ummm yeah you really dont need all that extra stuff. Me personally I bypass all those extra offers. It kinda reminds you of going to get your oil changed you really dont need all the extras but they make it sound like ya do.

Other than that I've never had a problem with them.

        Hey Desmond,

I've never actually purchased a domain from GoDaddy....I 'thought about it' once before, but, their series of add-ons and upsells is a bit...err....overwhelming....

At least initially, some of them seem necessary, but, then you get into vague add ons that seem intentionally structured to take advantage of all the internet newbies they probably suck in from their commercials....

This will be the second time I'm stumped in their checkout process alone....

Would you just pick "Standard" here?

Under their privacy and domain protection section:
        Standard (Include)/Deluxe ($9.99/year)/Secure ($24.99/year)

And, do you all do your hosting through GoDaddy, or, say, another service like Hostgator? Any recommendations?

Do you fair well with coupons? I should just Google something like "GoDaddy Coupons"...

When I started using eJunkie, I encountered a coupon for like 3 free months of the service Those coupons can be real rewarding, and definitely worth the few minutes to do a search...

Godaddy's sales system is an excellent example of how to offer up-sells. Yes, it's a bit much, but it works, and we can learn a lot by watching their system.

That said, I never purchase any of their add-on offers. Obviously some people must, otherwise Godaddy wouldn't keep offereing.

GoDaddy extras? I don't even think GoDaddy itself is necessary.

No really... you're on the right track if you've yet to purchase something from GoDaddy. While I do have domains through GoDaddy (I've been too lazy to transfer), every new domain I've purchased in the last several years has been elsewhere, such as through NameCheap.

To find out why, just Google "GoDaddy" and "spam complaints" on this forum and elsewhere... and read their TOS. Their policy (or at least it used to be) was to lock down people's domains and hold 'em for ransom (a couple hundred bucks) for spam complaints. Except it seemed that even folks who weren't spamming were having some problems.

GoDaddy has a right to do business in any way they please. I support their right. I just haven't supported their business with my money very much in the last few years (other than those couple renewals).

If you do decide to go with GoDaddy, you can probably skip the extras. I've never purchased a single one of their add-ons.

      Cheers,
      Becky

p.s. And as Don said, it's a good example of upsell marketing.

Were these spam complaints from websites hosted on godaddy or using godaddy email services?

It's been a while since I've looked into these accounts. However, IIRC, the folks weren't using hosting nor email services. They just had a domain registered with GoDaddy, and they had to pay fees to regain control of their domains (around $200).

i would suspect that Godaddy had a reason perhaps a T&C or TOS breach
i have over 275 TLD's on Godaddy and have never once had an issue in 7 years

Necessary is a strong word. Well, nothing is necessary for a domain except the domain itself.

What could be good, just if you want it, is privacy protection (the cheapest option).

All the other options are useless if all you want to buy from GoDaddy is your domain.

I never buy any of the add on services. None of them are necessary. Just the domain that I want and use a coupon code to get it.

    No.

    3) SSL Certificate ($24.99/year)
    This one is nice, though.

Well i think its a great marketing idea to have private listing. Why?
You have to place your contact information on your sales pages right?

Plus its free now, what of the next biling cycle?

Namecheap offers it free for every domain even if you buy just one.

I used to get all my domains at godaddy but the interface has just gotten so much worse the last few years. I moved to namecheap and am slowly transferring my domains as they expire.

Much better interface and free privacy and I do not have to wade through all those sales pages.

Like everyone else here - I usually just buy the domain names with a coupon, I guess a lot of people must go for the upsell since they can afford to run all those "racey" tv ads

Though I am a brand newbie to Warriorforum, I have done business with GoDaddy for over four years with about 40 domains. As stated by others, once you have an account it was an easy thing for me to stick with GoDaddy to manage all of the accounts with or without the extras. Since all of my previous domains are for exiting non-internet retail businesses, I also found GoDaddy an easy tool to provide for non-web savvy local business people, including their Website Now tool.
This is my first week exploring internet marketing for myself with an exclusive online business, so I am eager to learn from all of you about managing websites and marketing. I just purchased by first website from Host Monster, so I'm wondering how the this site and its services compare with GoDaddy.

Godaddy is awesome. I find there service really good, always get fast feedback from any tickets submitted, people on the phone are always helpful and I even get the odd phone call from them asking me how things are.

Their online system is a bit much in terms of upsells and I did get dinged for something that I don't think I actually clicked on since I've went through buying domain names 50-60 times or more. I called them up asking why I was charged for something that I didn't ask for and they said I must have checked something in the system. I asked for money back for the charge and they quickly had me go through the process for the refund. Kind of a pain in the you know what but quickly it was over with.

I still say they are the best!

I buy my domains through go daddy with a coupon.

Have bought so many, I just scroll down to the botom of each page and click next, never bought any of the addons.

You can change the name servers during checkout to your hosting company, however, I usually do this when I'm ready to use the domain.

I use this site for coupons, this person checks the coupons a couple times a week, so they are always valid.

Live Godaddy Promo Codes / Coupons

I just noticed the $6.89 coupon has now been increased to $7.49. Since yesterday.

Then I use HostMonster - Web Hosting for my hosting needs.

  • No. 3, the SSL security can be useful if you need to lock down your website content or have a high level of sales or believe your site may be targeted by hackers for some reason (though hackers can always find a way round security setups).

    Everything else is unnecessary.

Yes, they give you free private registration if you buy 6 or more domains, but you'll have to pay for them next year at renewal time, and the extra cost can REALLY add up!

    Good luck!

Namecheap gives you free privacy with each domain for a year. After that you pay for it. I don't use privacy, but it's a better deal than the Godaddy deal is for privacy.
