What Is The Most Important Thing in Internet Marketing?

So here's the deal. One of my golf buddies confessed to me that he wanted to get into the marketing game because he's seen what I do with the stuff I hired him to code.

His site is a beaut! But after two months of design work and a month of waiting. He has no sales. It is a brightly lit billboard on a dirt road.

So now he confesses that maybe us marketing nutbags must have a secret weapon or something to get people to throw their credit cards at us.

As he missed the putt, I said "yes that's it. We do know things that the average Joe doesn't. And, we know just the right words to put on a web page or in an email."

Now I could have told him to hire me at the start...but I did not want to hurt his feelings because this guy has been great to me and he is a superior coder.

Because I care about he guy I'm going to suggest that he should backup and focus with a proper Marketing Plan. Hopefully, I will hear the words, "show me how"
What do you think?

What is the most important thing in internet marketing? Sending Targeted Traffic to your website.

At least that is what has been so important for me while I am building my online business. I don't even have page 1 rankings yet for any of my websites, but I have still found ways to send targeted traffic to my websites, without spending a penny. Targeted traffic turns into income in one way or another, depending on how you are monetizing your websites.

The most important thing in IM (as in any business) is finding what you enjoy. Blogging, affiliate marketing, forum marketing. If you do something constantly - you will succeed. That is my belief

      Not really.

Yes, you must love what you do (so you don't lose motivation and momentum), but you gotta do it right and with a business mentality. Otherwise, every flower shop owner in the neighborhood would be a millionaire since they all love flowers.

i think it's just working hard and not to quit as the most important things. there's so many other aspects for a successful campaign, it's really hard to put as the most important. know your target audience, and target them like mainstream said, but there's so many ways to do so via, seo, build backlinks, ppc, etc

Find the starving crowd/audience (targeted traffic) and then send them to your site. Once they arrive then you can start testing and tweaking in order to try and improve conversions.

Nothing takes place until the traffic starts arriving.

Yeh, good one. I remember Ken McCarthy who runs the Systems Seminar once saying something like "I'd rather really know a market than marketing" to really drive home that point.

What's the site...if he doesn't mind sharing. If his work is as good as it sounds he could probably do better just creating sites for others while learning the marketing side of the business.

If you think you can make money online without spending any, you'll never make money. You need a small budget. Even if you start out with $50 a month, join one safelist and a decent autoresponder service. Start small and try to create enough referrals to cover that $50.00 a month. Then, the next month make your budget $100. Keep doing this until you are spending several hundred dollars a month on advertising, and you're generating over 10,000 hits a month. THEN you will make some real money, and you'll have a system in place to support your advertising dollars.

I did this same strategy my first six months online. That was six years ago. Ya, I had a lot of traffic, it sure wasn't targeted traffic. Safelists, traffic exchanges. No one bought anything. Then I got smart and decided learn copy writting.

If you want traffic to your site go with safelists for sure. If you want to make money online you need to learn marketing and write content. Traffic isn't going to get you anywhere unless there is a payoff for the person going to your site.

If they don't see value in you, they won't come back.
      Create Value.

    Awesome Advise guys & gals.

The only thing I would add is:
Although most tell you to pick one thing and stick to it,
Do not put all your eggs in one basket!
Once you learn that "one thing"
move on to something else because everything changes quickly.

To me the key is having a plan and sticking with it. The plan should of course include goals - both short term and long term. And everything that you do should take you a step closer to those goals. I believe that having a real FOCUS is the single most important thing in Internet Marketing.

Just keep adding good quality Article content to his sight and the money will eventually start rolling in. Internet Marketing is a numbers game. Also Back links from Forums such as Warrior will build his ranking. Its all in the numbers. Unfortunately some people do give up.

      Weed out your weaknesses,
      Capitalize on your strenghts!

What I mean by this is, if you are good at creating content, then you should spend a lot of time writing articles. If you know things that you are good at that most aren't, also a good thing to capitalize on.

I'd assume since your friend is a good coder, he's probably got some heavy duty HTML or PHP skills. He could very likely create a video course and sell it on Clickbank and other marketplaces and make a killing out of it, since video courses are the fury these days.

There's no sense wasting time on learning something or doing something that you're no good at. My dad told me long ago...

"Don't do what you enjoy doing, do what you are good at"

Since I have a super natural skill at driving, I drove trucks for a few years but having to wake up at 6AM every morning and going to bed at 3AM every morning for days on end wasn't really what I wanted out of life.

Your friend already has what it takes to be successful online, well above average computer skills. Heck, he could sell his services on sites like guru.com or rent a coder and make a killing just doing that. He could even get set up with CB and have other affiliates promote his skill. I'd pay to know what your boy knows in regards to computers.

    Hey SteelHead,

There isn't "one" most important thing. Internet Marketing is made up of many aspects, each one linked to the other. Each one unable to function properly without the other.

A quick buck online is up for grabs for anybody, but long term income is another ball game.

e.g your friend might have a great looking site, but without a step by step plan...he's wasting his time.

Without getting into the intrinsics of Internet Marketing, here are a few "important" aspects that immediately come to mind. (perhaps others can add to this)

    1. Business Plan - Set clear goals, break each goal down to achievable steps e.g. product/s choice, target market, traffic generation etc.

    2. Be Prepared to Invest time and Money

    3. Be Persistent and Consistent

    4. Be Creative....seriously think outside the box, it's great to follow the lead of other success stories, but don't stop there.

    5. Create or follow a system, systems work.

    6. Momentum - Tweak, test, discard, implement....keep it moving and growing.

    7. Customer Service, Customer Service, Customer Service!

    Cheers Marianne

Well if you have all the traffic in the world you would already know what to do with it. If you didn't know what to do with it then there is a serious problem and you should rid yourself completely from internet marketing - maybe standing on a corner with a Styrofoam cup would be more suited for that type of person.

Traffic is key. Without traffic you have nothing. Anybody that has or currently pushes volume will tell you the same thing. Landing pages, websites, graphics, code, etc... is all easy to obtain. Traffic is not, unless you spend a lot of money, or are very clever in the way you generate the traffic.

<shrug>... I was looking at it from my perspective. From the way I look at things, if you have that much traffic, then you should already have the knowledge to know what to do with it. All the traffic in the world would be a hard thing to obtain without a decent amount of knowledge.

I get what you are saying though... You can have a crapload of traffic and if you don't know what to do with it, then you are not going to make any money from it. If that is the case, send the traffic to me ;]

A better answer to this thread would be the simple fact that there are a bunch of little bits and pieces that make everything important.

Most internet marketing newbies are trying desperate to make their first dollar online, and this could be the main thing why they are not succeeding in this business. Desperation gets you to constantly search for the next big thing, the next perfect course that will magically help you become rich over night. Desperation is the key to failure.
And this is not the way to go in this business... Even if you have the perfect eBook, or the perfect software that does all the work for you, and you have all the knowledge you need in order to make money, this is still not enough. And what I am about to share with you is the most important thing in internet marketing. Most people do not want to hear about this, and because of this, they all fail in making money online.
But this crucial thing is not to be applied only in internet marketing, it is also important in the real life in general, because if you have this, more good things will happen and you will see how your life changes for the good.
The most important thing you need to have is a positive mindset. Yes, you probably think this is not such a big deal, but it is a very big deal. Without the proper mindset, you will never succeed; you will fail over and over again. And that's why most people do not make any money online, because they do not have the right mindset, and they give up too quickly, before the magic happens.
Keep in mind that a positive attitude and perseverance, and understanding that internet marketing is a long term business is the key to success.

You got excellent advices here. We have our own opinions, for me, the most important in internet marketing is to know your audience. Even if you don't know how to create a product and generate traffic at first, but by knowing your audience, you will have some idea what to give them. Also, focus on list building. I've never seen someone became successful online without a list. Gurus, super affiliates, online millionaires, they all have thousands and hundreds of thousands of subscribers list. You can earn money decently if you have subscribers, but if you have huge mailing lists, and a well-built relationship with them, you can surely earn big bucks online.

Focus on list building. I don't generate huge amount of traffic, but I'm consistently adding 10-20 subscribers in a day from small amount of traffic from 50-100 visitors a day only. Once you have at least 00 subscribers, time to leverage your effort and do some ad swaps to exponentially grow your list. That's the most important for me, know your audience, build your list, provide valuable information to your subscribers and audience, then leverage your efforts.

      Hope this helps.
