Alexa IS Trash - Complete Trash...

If you are going around making statements about sites based on what Alexa says I can guarantee you that you are wrong. Way wrong...

You would be much closer to the truth if you visit sites like this one:

Compete

The Warrior Forum has done nothing but increase in traffic for years now, there has never been a month when we've went down in traffic. Further, the last 7 months has seen an outright explosion in traffic.

But Alexa has us DOWN BY 64%...

LOL...

64%? Even a raw newbie knows that is totally ignorant.

Check attached images for a picture much closer to the truth. Compete is far closer to the actual truth than Alexa could even dream of.

We've seen "The Death Of" all kinds of things. When is someone going to come out with the Death of Alexa? :-)

Alexa rankings are virtually useless because they are simply so hit-and-miss. I never pay attention to Alexa rankings. PR is much more important.

Alexa has always been easy to game, and the results have been unreliable for MANY years.

Stats are just stats, and only as useful as the reliability of the source.
PR, Alexa, Webalizer... all easy to game, all irrelevant in most circumstances.

There's only ONE stat that's important in marketing.
      No prizes for guessing.

        I hear ya Allen.

I stopped using Alexa when I found out it makes all its judgments based on who has the Alexa Toolbar. That really doesn't help all that much.

      Hi Allen,

Surely there must be someone around with the guts and the cheek to bring up that thread about rants/blogs...

PS Perhaps a lot of people (in IM) have dropped their use of the firefox addon that had the google PR/Alexa toolbar thing in favour of the other addons that have PR as well as lots of other stuff (EG firefox for seo) but not alexa - so their visits here won't affect alexa ranking anymore.

I had that addon until about 12-18 months ago.

Seriously though Allen, about that adjustment for the bottom section ...

I know you are getting a handle on it, but did you know there was a bit of a bug in that section for the stats? I was in the VB forum the other eve to ask a question, and I saw a post about it. I think someone said they are trying to fix that now.

But then again, I didn't look at the date for that post. It was for the 3.7 version though so it's fairly current.

Just thought you might want to know.

SBI or SiteBuildIt tells all their member to get the Alexa tookbar. Then people in the SBI forum check out each other's sites and especially the SBI owner's sites.
Alexa ratings got through the roof.
Nice tactic to fool the uniformed.
I had a SBI site that ranked high in Alexa a long as I was active in their forum.

Is Alexa useful. Yes, if you know how to game the system.

Subtly yes. SBI recommends getting the tool bar. It is viral from there.
If you tell hundreds of newbies to use a free tool, they will especially if you are their mentor.
If newbies in a forum check each others sites, AND they have a toolbar to track them, ratings will go up. The more you post in the forum, the higher your Alexa rating will go, JUST AS MINE DID when I had a SBI site.

If the owner's and owner's child's websites are mentioned frequently, people in the forums will look.

Can you spell TOP ALEXA RATINGS?

PROOF, SBI! - Proof Of Success they tell you how effective their SBI system is and prove it with high Alexa ratings.

LOL, the key in my post is that it is not opinion. You go to the SBI site and they are proud of their Alexa rating.

    Allen,

I didn't think too many people went by Alexa much anymore anyway. Lol any fool can look at the bottom of the forum and gather what kind of traffic you get here. It's been growing since I registered that's a fact, but as you say it's grown by leaps and bounds for the past couple of months.

Thanks for that reference to. I didn't know about that one.

      Hi Mary,

The number on the bottom of the forum is misleading actually. It still shows you logged in for a while after you leave. However, that's changing by the day, I keep having to adjust the time so it doesn't get too carried away. More and more each day 'are' actually on when it says they are on so I have to keep adjusting.

Alexa ranking have always been flawed Allen because
they are based on the installation of a toolbar.

The vast majority of people do not have the Alexa
toolbar installed and therefore the Alexa traffic stats
are based on a very small sample size.

In my view it's a statistically invalid measurement.

And...It's a windoze toolbar, meaning those that use a Mac can't even install it. So, sites dedicated to Apple and Mac, which likely have a higher percentage of Mac user, have really under-reported stats.

I gave up on Alexa in about 1999, when I site I had that got about 100 people a day was rated as getting more traffic than another site I had, which was getting about 30,000 people a day. It wasn't even close.

IMO, Alexa is a trinket, for amusement purposes only.

My blog doesn't even show on Compete, so maybe I need to start driving more traffic!

I must admit, and I'll probably hang my head in shame, but every-so-often, I will go and see how I'm ranking on Alexa. I guess it's because it was the first site, of that type, that I'd come across! One thing I didn't know was that, with the toolbar, it gave you a better result!

Guess I'll have to wait and see!

    Allen,

I'm not sure exactly how compete does it, but the precise thing they claim to do is really impossible!(It would require communication with EVERY site, or EVERY visitor, or interception of ALL DNS traffic(which is only good for domains)) I have been saying that for YEARS! The SAME is true of alexa! SO, is alexa dead? In a way, it IS. Then again, so is ac neilsen(which works the SAME way), and compete. BTW Alexa would LIKE to communicate with every visitor, but they are "dead" because they can only SAMPLE those which they DO get. BTW with a site like warrior forum, newer visitors are LESS likely to show up, ESPECIALLY now! That is because the marketers that installed alexa because they visited the site, were probably already warriorforum members.

I have two sites. One I have only just got ranked with Google, and gets about 10 visits a day. The business is not even trading yet.

The other established for nearly 3 years, is highly ranked on the first page of google for some massive keywords, and gets a hell of a lot of traffic. Alexa somehow ranks the one I only just put up higher than the other.

[[Clearly people with the tool bar don't like my other site!]]

NB: Even compete seems to be a bit off too for my sites. And another a friend of mine owns.

I've seen the stats on two sites in particular. One averaged 10,000 uniques per day and the other averaged about 800 per day. Alexa ranked them both essentially equal in traffic volume. Yes, all the above posters are correct - Alexa's numbers are crap, based on users who have the toolbar installed.

I was told awhile back that Alexa no longer basis it's stats on the toolbar, apparently they redid how they calculate the stats and isn't based on the toolbar or at least exclusively.

I don't know, I never paid attention to Alexa or it's stats, never thought it was accurate anyway. Though if what I was told is true the toolbar is no longer a factor in it's stats calculations. Though I don't know, I never bothered to go read their site to see how it works now.

Alexa has never bothered me with their ratings. I had a site that was ranked number one on Google, number one on Yahoo and MSN for my main keyword and I had more traffic than I ever had. According to Alexa, they made it sound I had no visitors at all and my site was almost non-existent.

Besides, someone I admire and have high respect for, told me a long time ago, they don't go by rankings and etc, they just do something daily to get more traffic and promote their product and it all adds up over time.
