Custom minisite design or pre-designed Wordpress template?

I'm launching a new product soon and would like some feedback from buyers of any IM product.

I've been looking at themeforest.net and found several themes that would work for my product, but it's not the typical "minisite" look and feel.

My question to you is how much does the actual website design matter and is it even part of your buying process? I understand initial impression and visitor retention, but to me, it's the product, features, support, and what it will do to help me that are really important. That's what makes me buy, not the design of the website it's sold from.

Do I really need to spend more money on a minisite design (avg price $100+ for a decent package) that may give me less than a feature-rich Wordpress template for under $50? I'd rather spend more on copy-writing, but that's why I'd like your opinions.

So here are my questions:

1. What appeals to you more...a single, long page with all product information on it or a common website with 4-5 pages of content that you have to navigate?

2. Does the website affect your decision to buy a product? (Only the design...not copy)

3. After you buy a product, have you ever gone back to the product website?

Hopefully, this will turn into a great discussion that will help all IMers learn how their buyers interact and decide on purchasing.

I look forward to your thoughts and answers.

    Hi OMI,

I would like to answer your questions:

    1) This is a hard question and will probably depend on your market or niche or you but I prefer the single page design.

    2) Actually yes. If the website is horribly designed or obviously an overused template I steer clear away. It makes me feel the owner didn't bother to make their site presentable and he probably neglected a few aspects along the way too.

    3) Depends on the product. Like if its software and your waiting for version 2.0 or something.

I hope I have answered your questions.

    Thank you.

    Aljiro
