Hyphenated version of existing domain - is this allowed?

Is it OK to use a hyphenated version of a domain already owned by someone else - assuming the words in the domain are just ordinary nouns and not brand or trade names?

There is nothing to stop you using hyphens if the domain you want is already taken. You might also try adding a word to the end of the domain to see if that variant is available.

If it is a generic term that cannot be trademark then yes you can.

However you will always suffer some bleed to the unhyphenated version...so if you can make sure you get that one first if you are able.

yes if it's general terms, but generally hyphens don't do well and you'll have some users who will go to the non hyphenated domain. But sometimes, what can you do.

    Example: www.DogTraining.com

You can register www.Dog-Training.com. No legal issues at all UNLESS "DogTraining" is a brand.

I don't actually think a hyphen is an issue anyway, now that barely anyone types in a domain without first going to Google it is much less of a problem than it was 10 years ago when everything was about manual input.

But old traditions are hard to break, especially those that are completely wrong.

Yep, nothing wrong there. Hypens pretty much make the domain completely different even if it has the same letters, nmbers and words as the original.
