Why "High Traffic" Should NOT Be Your Goal Online

Alright this is geared more towards those that are newer to the IM scene. All you salty vets will already know this.

When I first came online, I thought it'd be great to have LOTS of traffic. I was still "learning the ropes", so to speak... and I thought that having tons and tons of visitors showing up on my website would naturally lead to big paydays.

Can you relate to that?

That's Not The Case.

What I learned... pretty quick actually... is that you can have 1,000 daily visits to your site, and still not make a penny. If the traffic that you're getting isn't TARGETED to what your site is about -- and what you're offering... it's not good for anything.

It's all about conversions. I actually had a site a while ago that only got 50 visits a day... but it made me a lot more money than my very first website - which I was able to bring in 200 visits a day for.

Keywords

Probably goes without saying, but everything online revolves around keywords, and keyword phrases. You have pay attention to WHAT internet users are searching for... and HOW they're doing it.

Commerical Intent

You gotta be able to look at a keyword and immediately figure out how likely THAT particular searcher is to want to buy something.

The "immediately" part comes with time... so don't worry if you're new at this

Let's check out an example:

For the "weight loss" market, which keyword phrase would be more likely to end with a purchase?

1 - "ways to lose weight"

2 - "lose 10 pounds fast"

And the winner is...

#2!

In the first example, the searcher is likely just looking for some general information about weight loss. They are still in the "research phase".

But in the second one, it's pretty darn clear what the searcher is looking for. They want to lose 10 pounds, and they want to do it fast. If you put a related offer in front of that searcher that satisfies that need, you're golden.

Little lengthy, but oh well. Hopefully someone found it useful!

    Excellent post Jake!

Here is a video I found some time ago on YouTube from Chris Rempel (The Lazy Marketer) which, exactly as you mentioned Jake, shows the importance of targeted traffic. This is extremely revealing.

Thanks, Jake. I've been preaching the exact same thing for years. Perhaps if enough of us keep saying it, it'll finally sink in.

When it comes to anything you can't sell directly, keep this in mind.

    Researchers look for nouns.

    Buyers look for verbs.

    Ways to lose weight? Noun.

    Lose 10 pounds fast? Verb.

    Dog training methods? Noun.

    Stop your dog's barking? Verb.

    Green energy options? Noun.

Build your own solar water heater? Verb.

The exception, obviously, is actual products you can put on someone's doorstep. In those cases, it's a scale depending on specificity.

Bonus tip: "free shipping" is pretty much the king of buying keywords for any product. Anyone searching for "Canon EOS Rebel T2i free shipping" is basically just trying to find a "Buy Now" button to click.

And you can even dig a little deeper or niche a little father...add more words to that in the beginning and/or the end and you have:

How to lose 10 pounds fast.

How to lose 10 pounds fast for people with Type 2 diabetes.

Very nice... Caliban, that's as elegant a way to describe buying vs. non-buying phrases as I've seen in a long time. Well done...

    Super summary.

There's no doubt that 1000 highly targeted visitors in a month is BETTER than 1000 non targeted visitors in a day. I'd rather have 2% of 1,000 buy something, than 0% of 30,000 buy nothing. Should really make perfect sense to anyone.

Great post. Unfortunately, what seems to sell in sales copy is the boast of thousands of visitors without regard to conversions.

Everyone, including me, seems to have to learn the hard way.

    Stay great.

    Generating traffic = easy
Generating targeted traffic = not easy

One thing I am doing now is having friends read my sales copy and have them tell me what it's about before I slap a title tag on it. Nothing irritates me more than a title tag that I click on only to find something similar to what I thought I was finding.

Targeted traffic is definately what you want to get. However, as I see it there are really 2 kinds of traffic that you are shooting for.

      1. Those that Buy - targeted

      2. Those that link - This is the real advantage of things like social bookmarketing because most of the people there can link to your page through bookmarketing or their own personal blog. This brings more targeted traffic.

Everything else is worthless. Or at least not worth very much.

I have always gone for quality instead of quantity. You could make 1 sale with 10 highly targeted visitors, but you can make 0 with 1000 un targeted visitors and the same amount of time is spent generating either.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say, I think the word you're looking for is "extraneous," as opposed to "similar." On the other hand, if you meant to say similar, then you have my sincerest apologies.

This is very true, give me 50 visitors a day to my website that are targeted over 500 who aren't any day. That is why I do not understand why so many people focus on traffic, and do not focus on increasing conversions.

Of course you need traffic, but you can make 6 figures on less than 50 unique visitors per day if you know what to do with that traffic (hint: build a list).

Very true, completely agree that less visits but higher targeted traffic is more valuable.

A great way to measure this is with tracking software - I use hypertracker as they are extremely flexible and very intuitive.
