Trouble with computer speed

Hi Folks,

My computer is getting down to a slow crawl. I ran Registry Patrol. It found 533 errors and fixed 35. Not real impressive, is it?

Anyone familiar with "double my speed dot com" that is advertised on the radio constantly?

Or is there a program that you would recommend for this purpose?

All help appreciated and thank you in advance.

JD

    Sure you don't have malware?

Try Malwarebytes and run a scan.

    Hi JD,
Have you tried using CCleaner? It's a free software that cleans out your temporary files and other garbages on your computer. It's also super useful for removing trialware that you couldn't get rid off through Control Panel. You can look for it on CNet.com. Another really good free software also on CNet is call SUPERAntiSpyware. It scans and removes malware or adware thoroughly with a very user-friendly interface. You don't have to upgrade to the paid version if you remember to download updates and then scan everyday or so.

    • I would agree with bizwebwriting about CCCleaner. I use CCCleaner regulary and the result is my laptop perform very great. I use it especially for disable and enable software that run on start up.

Also try Revo Uninstaller if you wish for uninstall any software from your WinXP computer. It will clean out the registry too when uninstalling. It's also available in free version.

Thanks Steve and Tiffany. I downloaded the Malware, SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner software. So far, I have run the malware and it found no problems.

In process of running SuperAntiSpyware. When it completes, I will run CCleaner.

FYI, the biggest problem is in the operation of the scroll bar, very hesitant and very jumpy. Haven't experienced this before.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

    Format Your drive
You might want to format your drive.

Back up everything, on a CD, and wipe the hardrive, formatting it, then reinstalling Windows.

This will be a fresh install and make your computer fast just like it is brand new.

Or get a New hardrive, where you can install windows on.

hopefully you have an antivirus program?
    if not, look into microsoft.com/security_essentials

malwarebytes is a great suggestion too

Don't spend your money on any of those "tools" to speed up your computer. Find out what is slowing you down.

check your msconfig ... start run type msconfig and check your startup programs

uninstall any unused programs in your add remove programs

    when is your computer slow?
    at start up?
    surfing?

what do you have for ram?
    free hard drive space?

do a defrag ... programs, accessories, system tools disk defrag

what operating system are you using? do you have all your updates and service packs?

a lot depends on why you could be slowing down

All the above suggestions should help you. Sometimes after a while it's best to just back everything up and start over with a clean install of Windows. I do this about once a year and it's always amazing how fast your computer is after a clean install.

Did you try shutting down your anti-virus program and your firewall to see if they are slowing your system down. I recently had to remove AVG from my system. There latest update was a disaster and took my pc to a crawl. I'm not sure if they have fixed it yet or not. I would also suggest the program " HijackThis ". I run "HijackThis" on occasion and google everything I don't recognize.

This can also be a sign of a pending hardware problem (memory, hd, dvd player) Something that can be very difficult to diagnose.
If all of the above fail there are various software test you can run to test some hardware.
Just Google for this and you will find tons.

cccleaner and malewarebytes are a must really , I have also been fortunate to be in the beta of Soluto....

then there are other things to consider like, defragmentation, how long time you had your operating system installed (i aimed to reinstall once a year) ...these are a few key basic housekeeping duties that you should consider

    hope this helps.

Hey guys and gals, I really appreciate your taking the time to help me solve this problem. A tip of the hat to Mrsray, Ken, Scott, Matt and TPFLegionaire.

1st an update: finished scans with SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner, both found quite a number of problems and fixed or quarantined those. Computer seems to be doing a lot better.

Running Windows XP w/ 500mg ram (which I believe is one of my probs.)
I have done all updates and service packs.
Slowness is primarily in scrolling. Page loads are ok. Plenty of hard drive space.

I will check out the several things recommended by Mrsray ie: startup
I did a defrag not too long ago.

      Again, thanks,
      JD

Scott: I did remove AVG a few weeks ago and replaced it with Avast. Seemed to solve the problem I was having then.

Another thing you should do, is defragging your hard drive(s).
This can be done by right clicking your hard drive etc.

There is also a great program to do this, called "Ultimate defrag", which I'd recommend.

    I hope that helps,

All of the above are great ways to clean out unnecessary files and data on your computer. How old is your computer? Maybe you should do a little bit of investing and just get a new pc instead of wasting your time going through all these programs. I'm sure you can find a new customize computer for a decent price now. Good luck!

One of the first sites I ever created included a great ten step guide which I directed many of my computer customers to so they could revive that old XP machine.

10 Step Guide To a Faster PC

Often these steps increase speed well beyond the original settings when the PC was new.

ram is pretty cheap these days... do you have any slots left for another stick of ram?

I personally reaload my pc at least once if not twice a year. I know... people say that you shouldn't have to do that but I know that a fresh reload will definitely take care of any weird problems... and 1-2 GB of ram can make a huge difference.

As far as the hanging when scrolling... maybe update your video driver?

Is there any particular process thats taking up more cpu power than it should? Go to your task manager and look under processes. Sometimes you could be hit by a trojan. I had this problem once. Download Adaware and it solved my problem.
