750 uniques, 250 clicks, 100 opt-ins, 5 sales - Here is how!

To make long story short:

An old Squidoo lens was getting about 20 uniques per day for months... but today I got over 750 uniques!... and I didn't do anything special.

So what exactly happened?
A while ago I saw an infomercial about "Working from home", sorry I won't reveal the name of the company... It seemed shady but I wanted to find out more. There weren't many results on Google, so I went directly to Ripoff report site. Sure enough the product was listed there, with hundreds of horrible comments.

So I created a Squidoo lens (could have been a free blog as well), I named the lens the same as the product I saw in the infomercial. In that lens I talked about making money online, threw in some affiliate links and an opt in form. I also had a section: Here is what the customers of XYZ have to say about this product...

Today, on a Saturday this company played their infomercial at least twice, so many folks hit up Google to find out more about that super money making program... Sure enough I was there, on the first page, listed BEFORE the official product website.

This is how I stole $100,000 paid TV traffic

More details on my blog.

What do you think of this technique?

EDIT: I do not want to take credit for it, I did not invest this technique. In the original post (on my blog) I mention that I heard of this from Jay, a great marketer.

Sounds to me like it would work. What you just did could be defined as a variation of the Conduit Method. You basically intercepted targeted traffic from the search engines via SEO.

Good job on picking that up!

The variation I speak of is a way to intercept the traffic of people looking for a specific keyword via optimizing a site/article/blog for a specific keyword with SEO.

The original method was named by Chris Rempel (a warrior here) and you can find it in the War Room private section of this forum.

      I don't agree with you.
I mentioned the comments from another site and linked to them.
Ripoff Reports is not down, Yahoo answers is not down...

I think the only way they could take it down is if you register a domain name with their trademark in it.

You're certainly free to think what you like but mentioning a
company's name in a product review hardly compares to using
their trademarked name for personal profit.

Well, if I haven't tried the product - I don't call it scam.

      Here is what I do:

I tell people that I have been involved in ...(Making Money, Losing Weight...) for the past 78 years (3 months, 2 days ) and I know for a fact that such results cannot be achieved within the time frame or without investing money or effort - whatever the case might be.

Then I offer them a freebie (the link tells them to my squeeze page). Sometimes I do promote another product instead. Sometimes I have both, product links and squeeze page links.

People obey the authority. If you come as an expert or an authority - people will buy from you, click on your links, they'll do whatever you tell them to.

Imagine you want to buy a Ford. I tell you that I have been working for different car manufacturers for the past 10 years... the last 2 years I worked for Ford and I quit because their car quality is so horrible... would you still buy a Ford or would you buy a car I tell you is the best?

This is EXACTLY the type of stuff that I used to start out my business. You can literally do this with anything that there is a "buzz" around.

The possibilities are endless. I never even thought of doing it for infomercial products though. That's an awesome idea. The prospects are HOT when they jump online after or during the TV spot.

That means they're revved up and ready to buy. Grabbing that organic traffic and redirecting to your product or opt-in page is a recipe for fast success.

Exactly! And it actually does build a "long-term" business in many cases.
Let's say someone ranks very high for Viagra - this company will advertise for years and years to come.

Most of the people who run infomercials will also do the same. If they are already spending $100,000+ on their 30 minute TV ad every other day - it only means the business is going well for them, so they will advertise for a while.

And many of these folks give you their toll free number and their URL - thinking you would visit or call directly, they do not rely on SEO traffic (that's not what they're paying $100k for) so in many cases they will be VERY easy to outrank.

And yes, infomercials is just one idea. There's also google.com/trends, new clothing brand names which get hot and become trendy for a year or two (think Diesel, Lucky 7, Ed Hardy)...

      Ha! Someone caught onto that
The truth is - I don't really have an opt in box in my squidoo lens.

I have an image (screen shot) of an Opt-in box which is link to a page, which is pretty much empty and has that same opt-in form in the middle.

      Dean:

The easiest way to do this is to create a screenshot of your sign up box and crop it right down. Then either upload it to your own hosting, or somewhere like Photobucket and place the image on your lens. You then just have to link the image to your landing page/sign up box and you're good to go!

      Alex:

Yeah this stuff works. I know the product you're on about and I know the lens you are on about. I also have one about this product and experienced a similar burst in traffic (although not as much as you). I'd pretty much given up on that lens...what a pleasant surprise!

This will work not just for products but for any sexy news story related to the products you sell.

When a new story hits you often have a couple of days before google has a ton of different stories indexed so the quicker you get your content indexed the more likely you are to get some valuable traffic.

This is an old ppc trick actually, but it does work great for stuff like Squidoo or blogs (think tags).

And when you're doing your tags, don't forget the variations of the domain name, especially the following:

    domain
    domain.com
    www.domain.com

There are others, but based on years of Adwords marketing, I can tell you those are the ones that will get you the most traffic.

I have entire documents about how to find these types of domains which someday I may sell as a WSO - although they are so insanely profitable I cringe at the thought of doing so.

By the way, when I ran CrazyFox domains a while back on PPC, they sent me a cease and desist.

    LOL

And when you're doing your tags, don't forget the variations of the domain name, especially the following:

      domain
      domain.com
      www.domain.com
      www domain com
      www.domain

Ha! I also got a cease and desist from Crazyfox... that's why I don't concentrate my "efforts" on that infomercial... there are plenty of others

        Too funny. Yes. Tons more.
We actually designed an online database to keep track of them and what type of platform we're using them on.

This is similar to Jonny Andrew's Money Siphon System, but I have to admit I never thought of doing it with infomercials.

I guess I'll have to start watching more tv. Great idea.

TV is a great place to get ideas. I did something similar about a year ago. I created a squidoo lens on a product I saw featured on Oprah. Because Oprah is already an authority figure people were ready to buy this product. All I had to do was make a nice lens with content, videos and of course the product! Every time they rerun that show on tv I get a spike in traffic to that site.

EDIT TO ADD- re: the opt-in form, I just got an email from Tiffany Dow on how to do this. Might want to check with her

Unfortunately I wasn't the one to come up with the idea!
BTW, this lens still brings traffic, opt-ins and sales!
