Black Hat SEO site teaches basic business strategy
One of my favourite Black Hat SEO sites (no link since there's an expensive membership component to it that I don't want to detract from this post) has just written a blog post about basic business strategy. Or, more importantly, everyone's lack of it.
Since its such a powerful lesson I'd like to repeat it here for everyone's benefit.
Basic business strategy as so many people see it -
1. Build a website
2. ?!?!??!!??!?!
3. Profit
1. Write articles
2. ?!?!?!?!??!?!
3. Profit
A few years ago it was probably this simple. Everything on the Internet was rubbish so you only had to be slightly better than rubbish and you were quids in. No one knew much about SEO so spamming some meta tags was pretty much all it took to be number one for a heap of traffic delivering keywords.
Unfortunately people got smart and the days of slapping up a few webpages and taking it to the bank are pretty much over. Its time to go back to basics and figure out how to actually make money at this thing.
Business strategy 101
1. Profit
That's right. Figure out why someone who isn't your own mother will pay you money for X. X can be a product, X can be a service but this is where you start.
"I will run a membership site" is not a product or service (example shamelessly stolen from another thread on this forum) and once again falls into the first type of Internet business strategy outlined above.
"I will write articles" is not a product or a service (although its a bit closer). Its one components of the product but doesn't tell the whole story. I could sit down in front of Word right now and churn out loads of articles on all sorts of subjects but that won't put money in the bank.
Once you've figured out what you can do that other people will pay for you have to figure out how much it will cost you to provide.
Money In - Money Out = Profit
If Money Out > Money In then move along, there's nothing to see here people.
So please stop buying into hype and fads. Please stop chasing after the vague promises. Figure out what you can do that people will pay money for and figure out a way to charge them for it that makes you a profit.
