Hey guys, I want to create an article directory but I don't know which route to choose. Should I host it with wordpress, if I were trying to make a big directory like ezine and articlesbase.

    here is one option:

Wordpress Article Directory Software & Plugins: Article Directory Software for WordPress!

    haven't tried it.

I have an article directory based on joomla (not too easy to implement), and have seen some based on pligg and article dashboard.

I have a pligg site and it is a pretty cool script.

Do you really want to create an article directory? There are tons already, to make yours stand out you will need to have very strict editorial control to ensure unique content, quality articles etc, but this will seriously eat up your time. You will also spend lots of time guarding against spammers who will use automated tools to submit spun articles to your directory, and reading this tortured english will probably drive you insane.

Unless you have an extremely good idea to make a unique article directory then I would advise you use your valuable time elsewhere. Also if you reject some articles the author may choose to exact revenge by clickbombing your adsense ads, which may result in you getting banned.

An article directory is a serious hassle, I would stay clear of it...

Unless you are an exceptional marketer with a unique angle, my advice would be to stay away from article directories. They're a tremendous amount of work. That being said, why reinvent the wheel? You can get a free article directory from Article Dashboard.

This free plugin & theme is meant specifically for article directories, but can also be used as a regular directory with some tweaking.

No offense sir, but that is just a god damn awful suggestion. The free Article Dashboard platform was abandoned by its creator, and the platform is easily hacked.

If you are considering starting your own article directory you would be best advised to come up with a list of feature requirement's, then hiring a developer to do a custom job.

I own a number of article directories powered by different platforms. My answer to your question is; IT DEPENDS!

It depends on your purpose/objective/reasoning for launching one.

It's really a not such a good idea to recommend products you haven't tried, used, proven or dis-proven.

Article Dashboard can still be downloaded. However, because of the security breaches, it is up there as one of the most hacked type of sites on the Internet. Unless you know coding, don't touch it!

This is a good WordPress set up. The only caveat is - it is a resource hog that way it comes out of the box. And, you will need coding experience to change the standard Red and White layout.

Chris, you're pretty passionate about your position I see.

CDawson, there are a number of ways you can go. As Chris suggested, you can hire a programmer to do a custom job. Or, you can hire a programmer to do a clone job, were you have them to clone EZA or some other site.

Another option to look at is this site: Article Directory Script | Article Directory Software and Directory Script Their script is easily customizable and you won't have any of the hacking issues you have with most of the AD scripts.

          Agree

If I may ask... where did I use the word "recommend"?

            See your above comment...

Right after you posted the link and then said, "Here is one option"

Unless I'm grossly overlooking something, posting a link and then saying, "Here is one option" is pretty much a recommendation, however slight. Or, am I behind the curb on recommendations?

I personally don't consider "options" recommendations, although I can see where some might.

Article Friendly is pretty good. Support is good and the community of folks who can help you customize it is also pretty good.

Of course, a custom job is really the way to go if you care about security and really want to stand out.

                  Bretski,

Thanks for bringing up Article Friendly. I researched it as soon as I read your post and ended up purchasing it. I'll be sure to keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks.

We do run our article directory on Article Friendly script and it is indeed really good. The script is easily modified and support is good. It can be hard work to get it started but that is with any website you start.

No, it is not recommendation. It is research. I took the time to go out there, google it and find a possible solution.

Like I didn't have idea if it was good or not, I added a side note saying that I hadn't tried it.

I wouldn't dare to say where you are in the curb though... at least not in public.

mmmmmm I don't like custom jobs for big projects... it is expensive, you are the beta tester, and there is never further development...
