Am I wasting my time trying to engage my list?

Hi,

I've been split testing a few variations of my follow up emails, but my list's response declines with time no matter what I seem to do.

I've tried all content follow ups, all freebies, a mix up of content and goodies, and then variation of the above with some promoted products.

My question is will your email list response (open / ctr rate) drop off no matter what you do?

Advice appreciated.

I think it's normal that people lose interest as time moves on. It's difficult to say exactly what is happening without seeing, but you want to protect your niche. Have you considered asking your customers?

    Yes.

I work for a company that does newsletters for offline companies. That has been our experience. Only advice I can give is to keep signing up new people.

People get bored, I think. Or lose their enthusiasm for a particular subject. Get their problem solved, aren't interested anymore.

Yes, they said, old people will ignore or unsubscribe, you need to definitely keep getting new subscribers...

My experience has been the same with my list. A word of advice. I went full bore with my list far too early I think. Each month I produced a very complete and well made newsletter which I think was very valuable and very engaging - it was a lot of work each month. My ROI was pitiful mainly because my list was just too small. So I stopped the newsletter and focused on just drip feeding short notes to my customers and have put my emphasis into building my list larger. So, I will keep my existing members engaged with more frequent but shorter little blurbs and once my list is large enough, go back to the newsletter and go more aggressively on the sell.

I would keep signing up new people and make sure your content is outstanding. As a matter of fact, I would continue to make each email better than the last. That should at least help some. If people feel your emails are valuable and help them, they will want to stick around.
