Hi All

I am in the process of redeveloping a website, and I am trying to choose a new color scheme.

Does anyone know of any online tools, where you can play around with the color scheme on a basic template, to give you an indication of what looks good?

Also, does anyone have any advice or able to provide me with some general rules or principals that I should be taking into consideration when trying to decide on a color scheme.

Cheers

Jake

I personal like clear white color background, because for me it's hard and feel noisy to see websites that are too complicated. However, it also depends on what niche/market you are in and who is your targeted customers. Different customers might need to use different color to get their attention. I suggested that you could go to Quantcast.com to check out your customer base. Just my thoughts....

Thanks cswjohnni, I will check it out.

By the sounds of it though, there doesnt appear to be anywhere on the web, where you can play around with the color scheme of a mockup website, which is suprising.

There could be a market oppurtunity here for someone.

There are wordpress themes that enable a colorwheel on the admin end. These allow you to change what ever colors around.

I agree with the above that the colors should suit the niche. I also think some people need to stay far away from trying to design their own sites. Not saying you're one of them .

Once you actually start messing with color combinations, you can get sucked in for hours. This I know from personal experience.

Thanks all for the responses, especially your Melody Christie. That "I love your site" link was really helpful.

  • I wouldn't mess around too much with the color scheme to be honest. There are formulas that have proven valid over and over: page background in light gray, content background in white, content font in black and title in dark red. Pretty much the color scheme of the Warrior Forum itself.

No need to reinvent the wheel or to fix what's not broken.

If you are using anything out of the ordinary get a couple of colour blind friends - you are bound to have friends with the more common colour blindness problems - to have a look at the site. You might be quite shocked at how little they can read. Apparently, approximately 8 percent of men and 0.5 percent of women suffer from some sort of colour blindness.
