LEGALLY streaming music?

I am interested in making a site dedicated to playing music but I want to LEGALLY stream music. I know there are some decent choices like Last.fm and etc but I really would prefer direct access to a stream URI so I can make (and style my own) (maybe Flash) player. My goal is then of course to add my affiliate links

Anyone know services that provide the above? Free and non-free? With no player or scripts attached?

They keep changing the rules on royalties for this stuff. Especially when it comes to the internet aspect.

Make sure you read up on it and do your due diligence.

Assuming you do it legally, it will cost you a fortune to make it happen. Pandora finally made money after 10 years and it was due to partnerships and technology to take things offline.

And now that we have Pandora, do we need another version of the same thing?

Not trying to discourage you, but unless it's music you own both the recording and the underlying composition for, you can burn through a lot of money rather quickly.

Jeez, Pandora has been around for 10 years? Where the hell have I been? I stopped using them recently now that they have an ad playing between every other song.

Here is an interesting article posted on Tuesday July 6, 2010,

"Google announced in May that it had acquired Simplify Media and was planning a cloud-based streaming music solution. This followed Apple's acquisition of streaming company Lala in December.

Recent reports have surfaced suggesting that Google will also expand last year's OneBox initiative. Instead of pointing music-based searches, however, to third-parties like Pandora and MySpace, Google will handle all the fulfillment itself on an à la carte basis to be followed by a subscription service at some point in 2011"

Approach a few up and coming artists and ask them if they want their own website or portal to stream their music?
