How Do I Use a PDF File to Make a Website?

Need some quick help/direction.

I need to rebuild a site for someone - but all I have are PDF files that look like the web pages.

Is there a way to turn these into html pages quickly within the template?

You do mean PDF and not PHP? PDF files will not create a website.

And here is something - I don't know that these current files have a way of editing on the host once I do get them up - which will be most annoying.

I do have photoshop - but not sure that will be any help.

Build an HTML template to fit everything in.

Then, you can use Photoshop to open the PDFs and extract the graphics. And you can use Acrobat to extract the text from the PDFs.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

That sounds way to complicated Dan.

Honestly, I don't really know how to build html templates. I know how to fudge things that have been built (I'm a little backwards like that).

Anyone feel free to pm me who thinks they can work this for me.

I have these single pdf pages that look like the pages of the website. There is a working version of this website online - but we don't have back end access to it - can only view the page source which isn't telling me too much.

This is one of those deals where the original person who was managing the domain and hosting has gone poof - so I'm moving the site (or what I can of it) to a new hosting.

The person we got these pages from sent it this way to the web guy -
can you tell the web designer that is getting these files that they are all flattened pdfs that the previous web designer uploaded to the site,...(nothing was text editable) -- the web designer will know what that means...)
LOL, if someone knows "what this means" or how to work with these please do pm me. And a quote on what you want would be helpful too.

Well, the page source IS the HTML. So no point converting PDF's, you already have the HTML through that avenue. If the site was originally done in Wordpress that won't give you the wordpress version. And you'd need to download the graphics separately.

I am not sure about that... You have no idea what kind of idiotic things are uploaded as "websites".

A friend of mine, a graphic designer, wanted something on the web, so I gave him a subdomain on an old site of mine. Guess what? - He made some huge image files that looked as web pages and uploaded those to the site When I told him about HTML he thought I was crazy

I think Jill has a similar situation. Some self-appointed "designer" made this mess and now she has to clean it up.

Jill, find a good HTML/CSS guy, show him the site and tell him to code what he sees. I can't think of a better solution...

Dan was kind enough to spend some time piecing some things together -but turns out the site is an utter disaster (not because of Dan, lol).

Image files are used to show what should be words on the site. It's a disaster for SEO IMO.

I need to replicate the site and need a matching wordpress template to boot - so I did try to pm some designers here on the forum to get some quotes but if anyone did not get a pm for me and is looking for some extra work please do pm me.

Istvan, as funny as that sounds about your friend, this site is a close second. There is no folder for images - everything was all tossed into the main site.

                  I've seen worse.

But this one doesn't even have ALT tags for images. And the meta tags reference a website URL that shows up as an under construction site.

And virtually ALL of the text is in images. So there is nothing for the search engines to latch onto.

The kicker is that one of the earliest websites I ever did for a client was for one in the same niche. That was circa 1998 or so. And that had better SEO than Jill's client's site...

    Hi Jill,

The only way I know how to make a pdf a website is to have the pdf on the site and
have the html/php code open the pdf when someone visits the site.

I don't know of any other way to convert a pdf to html although you could
convert it to a word document and then take pieces and put together a
    website. Wouldn't be very fast.

    Have a Great Day!
    Michael
EDIT: Michelle, I thought I had that program on my system and did a search for it with no luck.
Chocked it up as old age and a pipe dream...lol

Don't know what kind of programs you have on the Mac, but if you have a word processor with a export as html, or save as html, then try this:

Copy and paste the .pdf (if is can be copied) into your word processor, then...
Save it as an html file.

The word processor should convert everything - color, spacing, etc. Of course you will have to tweak it some. Maybe a lot.

      Hope this helps.

    Jill,

Did you try the Internet Wayback Machine? They may have copies of the pages there.

      Thanks Dennis.

The site is still online under the dot com name. The issue is that contact was tried for over 3 months to make updates to the site, and there is zero response. So either the guy died or is dodging the bullet or is off in Europe spending his internet millions. Either way my client is not happy.

I got her the dot net, putting back order on her dot com, doing a redirect at the moment but need to re-do the entire site and put on a new host. The gal who apparently had the site files sent these pdf's - and Dan went in to inspect the source code on the current pages and found everything in these picture files - which when I was trying to look at the source code myself I was in some disbelief and thought I might be missing something.

I'm getting it all back in order to make sure she has control over it all, but will be also sending a CD with all the information so if anything ever happened to me she would have enough to get someone new on board.

Ah - I have a friend with a site like this - each page is just one big picture. Her "friend" who did it says that SEO is rubbish and text doesn't make any difference LOL. And again, she doesn't have access to the site to fix things up. Ooops. Happens all the time.

Hi avenuegirl, not to be a jerk, but are you getting paid to do the work? If so, I don't believe that you should be asking for support on it. Also, why can't you ask the individual to send you the source code to the website? You can get on im and walk them through the process if they don't know how to do it, or you can ask them for their ftp details and then just download their source locally. Once you have the source files it will be much simpler for you to make the appropriate edits.

  • Hey Jill,

I have an application that converts PDF files into a Word Doc and for the most part keeps the formatting intact including tables and images.

Once you move the site to the new hosting it should be easy to gain access to the admin backend. May just be a matter of changing the admin password through the database in order to gain access to the admin section.

Once you have access it should be relatively easy to take the information in the doc files and add it to the site as needed. Depending on the script being used for the site that is.

But again my application is windows based. But I would be happy to convert a couple for you to let you determine if the doc file is workable for you. Just shoot me a pm with a link to download a few of the PDFs if you want me to try this for you.

If all you want to do is copy content then surely just c&p what's in the PDF rather than faffing around with converting formats?
