How Did You Make Your First Dollar Online?

Fellow Warriors & Pro Internet Marketers:

Can I ask you 2 simple questions?

Ready? Here we go...

1. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR FIRST DOLLAR ONLINE?

2. IF YOU WERE STARTING OVER AGAIN TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR FIRST DOLLAR ONLINE, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE?

The reason I'm asking is because this past Monday, my youngest son made his first online sale at Fiverr, a day after his 15th birthday,

That's right! He made a grand total of $5.00. But Wow! He was sooo excited!

Our whole family was so excited. This was a moment of great celebration in our house.

You see, my oldest son and I have been making full-time incomes as Internet marketers for many years now, but we can still remember that amazing moment and feeling of euphoria when we finally made our first sale and first dollar online from a complete stranger who we had never seen or met face to face.

Although nowadays, making money online is a common event for us, making that first $1.00 is to a great degree, the equivalent of "losing your virginity" as an Internet marketer.

Making your first dollar is so important, because you finally KNOW deep down inside, that it's possible to make real money online, and that YOU can really do it!

So, for the good of this forum and for the benefit of all those "Newbies" out there who still haven't made their first dollar online...

Please take a couple of minutes to give back and share with everyone your wise and sincere answers to these 2 simple. yet profound questions...

* How did YOU make your first $1.00 online?

...And...

* If you were starting out from scratch today, what would you do to make your first dollar, as quickly as possible?

Thanks in advance for your input and insights.

I made my first dollar by blasting an email out to people I
didn't know with my affiliate link :-)

Yes, it was called sp**ing and that was years ago.

Today, I wouldn't recommend you to do the same

Now, I would offer a service such as writing articles,
creating a video, building links etc... and offer your service in a forum.

It's definitely the quickest way. If you do it right, you can
make much more than a dollar within 24 hours of your post.

    First buck: making custom graphics

Starting over: That's hard. So many options. I guess it would come down to whether I wanted to go with something I know or try something different. If I went with something I know I'd probably build another content site and sell info-products from there and have a membership site as a sister site.

If I wanted to try something different I might try site flipping.

I made my first dollar through Online Survey. It was long back and I made $5. But I do not recommend online survey to others since we can't make more money through surevey. More over so many offer is not available from all the country. Creating own product, Affiliate Marketing and providing services are the best way to make money online.

I made my first dollar online clicking links... it was more than 10 years ago, back when anything with .com at the end would make you a millionaire from venture capitalism, even if the idea was stupid. Some of that venture capitalist money drained to me.

Then I started making money from writing product reviews.

Then I expanded into making money from writing informative articles. I expanded that into Squidoo, then I started creating products. Now I'd like to kick up what I'm doing a notch and start selling more.

If I was going to do it over again... I'd start trying to monetize sooner.

I made my first dollar, actually $200 dollars, by selling a home study course that I had created to teach Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs how to start their own business in the United States.

I struggled to get traffic to my site, until I was interviewed by a Spanish channel called Telemundo. They asked me to come back for 6 interviews and my website traffic and online business exploded.

That was in 2003, but even now, the whole idea of making money over the Internet still blows my mind.

First dollar was through Adsense. Decided to drop the PC games and start building my own websites, so I build a 36 page website on Track and Field and drove traffic by commenting in forums. It's still up and brings in the occasional Adsense revenue.

If I had to do it all over again I would probably do the same thing. I loved combining my love of Track and Field with constructing a website of my own. Nothing like making money and having fun at the same time!

It was back in year 2006. I made my first $0.05 from adsense. I was really happy at that time and as a prove that I can make money online.

Yeh, it doesn't matter if you make $0.05 or $500. It's the idea that you can can generate income via the Web that really gives you a rush!

PPC is a great way to drive traffic fast, but be careful with Google. They're getting very strict and won't hesitate to slap you and cancel your Adwords account.

I suggest you start with MSN Bing and then Yahoo Search. Clickbank is the best way to get started in Affiliate Marketing.

I made my first real money when I sold my own ebook. I have like 5bucks sitting in my adsense account that will probably never get paid to me. I sold that first copy of my ebook a year ago for about 30bucks. That was awesome. Now I make my real money doing offline marketing.

I think the one thing I would change is keyword research. I had no idea back then. I just sold off my reputation, so it didn't go as far...

but now I loves it! I am my own boss.

Yes, keyword research is the key to targeting your online marketing efforts. Essentially keywords are the backbone of the Internet. It doesn't matter if you're using Google, YouTube, EzineArticles, etc. everything is based on searching for keywords.

Good question I made my first dollar online years back after reading the bum marketing method and applying Travis Sago's method. I played with classified ads then moved on to articles etc....

If I had to do it all over again I would of started my email list much sooner, outsourced more, and just concentrate on tasks that actually make you money!

Build that Email list, drive as much traffic to your Blog, or Website as humanly possible. Traffic equals money newbies! Without traffic your business will sink.

Build your email list, drive traffic, and my future goal is to create my own hot selling Clickbank product down the line in the near future. That should be your goal too down the line to create your own product, and build your email list.

2 most important things you can do!

Jay, thanks for your sage advice. You're spot on when you say that traffic, or better yet, "Qualified Traffic", is the essential ingredient needed for success as an Internet marketer..

Affiliate marketing is great, but it can have its ups and downs. I think if I had to start all over again I would build a list immediately in order to set up a long term business, and do freelance article writing as a way to generate immediate income.

This way you build a business asset, but you don't lose your passion because you are seeing some immediate income.
Yes, building a list is critical. If you don't have a list, you really don't have an Internet business, yet many online marketers focus on product creation first and then list-builidng. It should be the other way around.

I made my first $$ online selling stuff on yahoo auctions ( well before Ebay ) Actually didnt have my own computer, would goto the local library and use theirs.

Auctions are a great way to get rid of some household clutter and make a few bucks, but for most it doesnt have longevity. Once your junk is gone, so is the opportunity.

If I was just starting out today, I would create a simple affiliate site and use article marketing to bring in a quick sale. Then I would flip the site for more money to create more websites.

Adsense, way back in the mists of internet time known as five years ago. A magical era to be sure

Starting today? Good question. There is literally a million things that could be done. I would say start small and stick with just one thing till it yields those first dollars. Then scale it and outsource it. Thats whats kept me from having to get a "real" job for 5 years

I agree with you Linda. There are so many opportunities out there, that it's easy to get distracted and sidetracked.

Focus on one project, monetize it, scale it and outsource it is the way to go. Once you have one steady stream of income, then you can add more streams one by one following the same process.

I just got a cheque in the post for $60 and I didn't even realize I'd made a sale lol!

After that I think it was magnetic sponsoring!

More difficult question: knowing what I do now, I honestly wouldn't try to do it "as quickly as possible", myself: I'd try to do it in a sustainable way that brings in some residual income for the work done. I think "fast hits" - confidence-boosting though they are - often do little to develop real businesses. Especially for people who have little experience.

I'd find an unusual, interesting Clickbank product with low gravity (ideally in single figures, so there's very little competition), a good sales page without an opt-in or other obvious leaks, find some long-tail keywords, set up a little blog/site with a good domain-name (can be done with a free domain-name and free hosting), write just two or three long, controversial, entertaining articles aimed specifically at widespread re-publication/syndication, post them on my site first, wait until indexed and then submit each to EZA and about 6 other good directories with links back to the site where I'd have a review/pre-sell for the product with hoplinks.

Then think about SEO after that.

Can't really miss, if you do it properly, though it requires (i) writing skills, (ii) an understanding of what sort of material gets widely re-published from article directories in front of targeted audiences, and (iii) product selection skills. And for these reasons, whether it's a suitable model for an inexperienced 15-year-old, and/or the fastest way to make any money, I doubt, actually. Sorry, maybe not a helpful answer for you at all. Just something that I know works well and reliably and can produce some real money within a couple of weeks.
Great insights. Thanks for you input Alexa

I made my first dollar way back in the 90's when the FFA links trade was at its height. I made $18 after spending about $300 !

6 months later I was making $300/month and spending nothing as I had a great upline who was sending motivting newsletter which encouraged my downline to stay active and recruit more people!

My advice for a newbie, is always have a mentor. I had it in the form of an active upline, which kept both me and my downline motivated and focused.

Never underestimate the power of a mentor.

    1. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR FIRST DOLLAR ONLINE?

If I remember correctly, I made my first dollar as an affiliate for a photography product by writing a couple articles and passing traffic to a blogger blog.

I still make money from that blog occasionally and haven't touched anything about it for a good 3 years now.

    2. IF YOU WERE STARTING OVER AGAIN TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR FIRST DOLLAR ONLINE, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE?

I would take a completely different approach than article marketing to sell information products.

I would go offline, find companies that need leads, and market for them for offline CPA.

When I checked my clickbank after a few weeks i had made 7 sales that excitement got me started in online marketing. In fact that keyword had my ranked at the second spot for long. Selling website setup and hosting. Mid-90's. Offline partly, but we had advertised online and had clients outside of the country.

Getting paid was fun - I remember asking the bank when we got our first foreign client if they took foreign checks and getting a 'sure we take Canadian checks' response. Unfortunately, our client was in the Philippines, NOT in Canada.

I popped my dollar cherry within a month into the game. Somebody bought an amazon book off of one of my blogs, then it happened again within two weeks. That was nearly a year ago and that blog is dead. IM got demoted to my back-burner for a while, but knowing that I made that one sell has probably had a lot of subconscious influence on my ability to stay interested and focused.

That's why adsense doesn't really have an appeal to me. It seems like a total grind for pennies on the dollar....Forever...

      Hi,

I made my first money online in 2004 by selling my own info-product in the massage marketing niche.

In 1993, I had started a private practice massage business on a $100 budget that I built up and expanded into an even more successful massage therapy center so writing a marketing book for massage therapists was a natural beginning for me into the info-product industry.

I did my first info-product with my then business partner. It took us 8 months to write it and get it up online. It made one sale during it's first month... and it was our only sale for that first year.

It probably wouldn't have done that if I didn't already know how to write a salesletter. Not as well as I do today but I still could write a good one then.

Starting over today: I'd offer a professional service and use part of the monies I earned from freelancing to finance my info-product education. In my case, I would still go into copywriting.

      Take care,

      Mike

Just to add to my previous post,

A subscriber to my list told me it was easier to make money back in my day then now! (he hasnt made a penny yet) Back in my day?? Im not that old!

Actually I think its easier now as more people are willing to spend money online and I proved to him I could make money quickly.

I joined Fiverr and posted a few gigs... if you search my WF handle on Fiverr you will see that I have satisfied customers and I only posted the gigs this week!

Take action and it happens. Make excuses and you lose....

My first dollar online was from writing an article for some water filter salesman off a Craigslist ad.

What would I do now? Probably would still write, but also wouldn't have spent money on over 40 different IM strategy products and ebooks..lol

I go back to what has been preached here over and over: Find ONE program that you like and work it till the wheels fall off. Sometimes simpler is better.

My first money made online was in the summer of 2000. I had just bought my first PC and discovered eBay. After buying some things from other sellers, I decided why not turn it around and make ME the seller? So I did. Started by selling my own stuff. Mostly car parts I had laying around, then old magazines and brochures. Then I went out looking for things to buy and resell, like old magazines and car parts. I bought a bunch of 1970's stickers for cars (with the name of the car) that you put at the top of your windshield. Bought a few for $2 each. Bidding got as high as $40 US on one of them. The exchange rate on the Canadian dollar was 50%, so I got $60 CAD for one sticker I paid $2 for. I bought another 300 stickers for 75 cents each. Prices stabalized at about $15 each.

What would I do differently? Not deal in small, low priced physical products. Lots of work packing them and shipping them. But for a while there, I was living off the money I made on eBay while going to university. Mind you, I was spending about 40 hours a week on my eBay business.

Oh, and I must share another one. My second online venture. Back in the good old "Wild West" days when sp@m was tolerated and I didn't know any better. Bought some lists of email addresses and promoted this series of 4 letters that told you how to make money. They were $5 each. Yeah, it was a chain letter. Yeah, I had to keep switching ISP's because they kept canceling my account for "alleged spamming." But I was young and stupid.

And every day I'd have $5 bills arriving in my mailbox. Always at least $20, sometimes over $100. And the USA/Canada exchange rate was still around 50%, so I was making $150 CAD for every $100 USD I collected. That was more than I made working at my "job" at the time! Life was good. I went on a vacation, bought designer clothes, a motorcycle, etc. All from money I made online. I indulged myself with my online income and used money from my day job for living expenses.

By the end of the year (somewhere in 2001) the FTC in the USA and the Consumer Protection in Canada went on a rampage to stop people participating in this program. They said it was illegal and if I continued (and didn't send back the $5 to people with a letter explaining why, to all subsequent requests for the reports, then I would be going to court). I stopped while I was ahead. Some people didn't and they got charged.

But, that definitely whet my appetite for making money online. Both of those early ventures blew my mind. I could make as much or more money online than at a regular day job. Of course, things have changed immensely. But every day I go to work at my "j.o.b." I keep thinking how much better it would be to spend that time online marketing. That's why I'm finally pulling the trigger and doing something online again. Not as labor-intensive and definitely 100% legal! Soon to launch my first membership site. The first of many I hope. And another, more hands-on business as an Internet Marketing consultant to a specific offline industry. I've learned lot about SEO and web design lately and helped explode my friend's local business with the help of a website. Time to monetize my expertise!

    Hey Charles, Great question.

I made my first dollars online selling stuff I did not want, thought this was easy.

I made my first real money through ebay. I spent weeks finding a supplier that I trusted, I would import (Genuine) memory cards from China. The first order was really scary because I had to pay up-front for the stock, I was really worried, as anyone would be but I figured that if I was gonna make it I would have to take risks, and this was my first test! $6,300 sent via money transfer and no finger nails left while I waited, to my relief they rocked up..."few"!
I would sell them for over 100% profit on eBay, but all too soon the counterfeit items were starting to show up, these were selling for half the price of what I was paying for genuine items... gravy train over but I was making around $6,500 per week (No BS*) for about two years - not too shabby at all!

I would agree with most, there are a number of good ways to make a dollar now, Adsense, Adwords and all that good stuff but I would say that Blogging has to be the simplest, carve a niche, blog about it and then press collect - simples!

    Regards

    Don

I made my first $100 blogging from adsense.

It took me a month to make the $100 because of the high competition in the niche I was operating in. I am uilding more logs to earn extra monies but this time in a niche with less competition.

Sold a pdf crochet pattern I'd designed on ravelry.com a few months ago. Since then I've made a handful more pattern sales and a little in advertising on my blog. It's slow going but it's gradually starting to build up

I don't know what to suggest to someone just starting out, as that's what I'm doing, but I guess it would be do what you love. If you're doing something that doesn't really interest you, it will be harder to get through the early days of slog and poor returns. If you're doing something you really like, then the 'hard work' part is a lot easier!

Charles, first of all congratulations on a very good thread. Secondly, and far more importantly, many congratulations on being such an inspiring father to your sons.

By doing what you're doing and teaching them to be entrepreneurial, you're setting them up for an awesome life. If I ever have children, I will follow your example and show them how to make their own money online. Great work.

In answer to your question, my very first dollar came from PPC on a site for a radio show/podcast that I did.

I knew nothing about internet marketing at this stage.

If I were to start again from scratch, I'd probably do what your youngest son did and set up a little business on Fiverr! I have a strategy for Fiverr which your son might benefit from in a report I'm currently writing. PM me and I'll send you a copy for him.

      All the best,

      Matt

I mailed a cassette tape to a BBS user in 1978 for $5, so he wouldn't have to download everything over a long distance connection.

Now, if by "online" you mean on the internet, in 1996 I charged someone $250 to open a Geocities account and build a web page about vampires in New Orleans.

    2. IF YOU WERE STARTING OVER AGAIN TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR FIRST DOLLAR ONLINE, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE?
    I would...

The reason I'm asking is because this past Monday, my youngest son made his first online sale at Fiverr,
    Yeah. That.

That's right! He made a grand total of $5.00. But Wow! He was sooo excited!
$5 is a familiar first sale amount.

I made my first dollar from promoting an affiliate program. At the time, I really didn't know what I was doing.

In the way of doing it faster (took me about 6 months) I would pick a niche and pick a marketing style. I would then just completely focus on that and nothing else. Trying to do many different things at the same time makes it so that nothing really happens.

I made my first online money by building a website with SBI, Site Build it. The education I got from SBI has helped me a lot since. I started building Wordpress sites a couple of years ago and they are doing well also. My first site that I started building over 5 years ago is fully supporting me now.

If I had been smart I would have stuck to just SBI.
