What are you using as your main marketing computer?

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of putting something together but it has suddenly occurred to me that I don't know the breakdown of different machines used in the IM world.

I know that it's trendy to turn up to speak at conferences with Apple kit but what is everyone using day-to-day to get the job done?

    An iMac.

But if you are a frequent traveler as well, get a MacBook.

Perhaps you could look into the iPad option. iPads are going to be the next big thing, so you could make a killing. Because they are portable and not as bulky as a laptop, I think they will become very popular with people who are always on the go.

      Hey Ray.

But I don't think an iPad is equivalent to an IM machine. For instance, you cannot run software.

If a laptop seems to be bulky, a netbook could by a winner!

We have 2 desktop pc's and a laptop pc but I mainly use my laptop because I can take it anywhere. Even in the house I prefer the laptop because I can work in whatever room I fancy and can even do so sitting up in bed. I bought this neat metal rack that's just the right height and fits just right across (but not on) my lap. It's actually supposed to be used in the kitchen but it's perfect for my laptop and mouse pad (I don't really like using just the touchpad). So now it's not just breakfast in bed but also IM in bed
The desktop pc's have more or less been relegated to gaming and watching online movies (they have bigger screens than my laptop). My husband and our kids do a lot of that.

I use my PC because, to put it simply, does everything I need it to.

The Ipad would not be very good at all for IM, imagine having to use that touchscreen keyboard all the time, not to mention the fact if you want functionality in anything you have to buy overpriced apps. Netbooks all the way!

I'll confess here that I've been a long time PC user - typing this on my laptop as I speak. The Apple kit has always been a temptation for my gadget brain but so far I have resisted

Maybe I need to buy one just to create products that don't leave anyone out...there do seem to be a lot of Macs in the first few replies. I'll let this run for a while just to see.

I use a laptop - mainly as a desktop replacement, but with the advantage of being able to chill out in bed and work, or work from my girlfriends house.

I plan to get one of those tiny laptops to keep tabs on things when I go traveling too.

If you don't need to move about then a desktop is probably better. It's faster, cheaper, more reliable, less likely to damage.

I use a laptop and love it, I don't know that I could ever go back to a desktop now. Although I do use a normal mouse - hate the little typepad thing on laptops!

I definitely wouldn't sway from using my laptop to get all my jobs done. It's so convenient - I can take it with me on my travels and also any room in the house. I only use the desktop if something is running slow on my laptop and I can't wait The screen is a good size. Never fancied an ipad, but I dont think it would be adequate for all my IM business/software.

  • I'm using Toshiba's Centrino 2.0GHz laptop and Dell's Dual Core Desktop PC with WinXP Pro as an operating system. They both serve me very well. Just remember to have at least 1GB of RAM and keep away viruses and spywares

I've got Fujitsu Siemens desktop PC and a Dell laptop (Windows XP). I have an older computer which I built from components 10 years ago and kept as a backup machine before I got my laptop. I keep threatening to to get it down from the attic and convert it to Linux, but never quite get round to it.
