A simple article writing and keyword question

You read all the time that you should target your article to one specific keyword that is specific to your subject.

On occasion, I've accidentally targeted more than one keyword in an article and I was just wondering if it makes much sense to do this deliberately.

I'm not sure what the downside would be if you did. Google searches for content to match a specific keyword. It won't notice that you have 2 different keywords in there. So why does it matter if you target just one keyword or several in one article?

Will Google ignore the same content when indexing each specific keyword?

Just thinking that if you can naturally insert more than one keyword into an article, it could get more hits.

Or is it a bigger problem with the article databases, although I don't see how.

  • I do this on every one of my articles.

I have a lot of keywords that are nouns and synonyms for my niche name, and also have a lot of keywords that are verbs or information style keywords.

I use one of each, fit them both in the title, the description, and a few more times in the article
  • It doesnt hurt infact your site gets served more often when the related keywords are typed in the search engine.
  • I target two keywords for the body of the article, but have my main keyword in both the title and body. I'll put those keywords in the edit field, but the body of the article has synonyms on those two keywords.

Take the keyword "ecover" for example. To google, it has more than one meaning. It's a company that sells green cleaning products, but it also means an image of a product.

It makes sense to me to use synonyms or relevant keywords that tell google that it's NOT a green cleaning product

  • I try to include more than one keyword phrase that at least makes sense in the article. You know how most article directories allow so many keywords - if you only target for the one phrase, I wonder what the point would be for some of the other keywords. So I sometimes incorporate two keyword phrases and include some similar keywords that make sense with the theme of my article.

Plus, it looks less like you're keyword-stuffing that way (even though I'm sure you're not keyword-stuffing)
  • In a word, yes! I target multiple keywords in my articles all the time, and it's been very successful for me. The key is making sure all the keywords you're using are as relevant to your content as possible. There's no point using the keyword phrase "pink flamingos" multiple times if your article is a review about car tires.

Don't laugh...it happens more often than you might realize.

    • It's perfectly okay to target more than one keyword in your article, especially if you think you can rank for them and they are closely relevant. It's a great strategy. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

But your title may only have room for one or two keywords. Some article directories, like EzineArticles, will not allow you to put more than one keyword in your title. I think it's because they fear you will spam the keywords and cause their site to get Google Slapped and ruin their good PR status.

They have a point. Just follow their rules for submission purposes.

But you can maximize your article body for more one than keyword you think you can rank for. Then just backlink appropriately.

    • Let's say you want to target "key to success" and "profitable online business". You could easily include both in one article and in the title.

You could alternate both keywords throughout the content, so that they each appear no more than 2-3 times. That should give google just what it needs to index that article for those keywords, while still being acceptable to the article databases.

If you consider both keywords x 3x each, then it could be considered keyword stuffing, but would it?

  • it shouldt be much of a problem, i use more than one keywords at times, and sometimes i get ranked for the keywords i used unintentionally so there you go, it might come in handy.
