What Is The One Thing You Discovered You Have Been Doing Wrong All Along?

I am curious to learn what are some of the things that you have discovered in online marketing that if you knew them a long time ago you would have started making money sooner?

In other words what have you learned you were doing the hard way?

What is the one, smack-yourself-in-the-forehead-with-an-open-hand- because-it-was-just-so-obvious-and-boy-do-I-feel-stupid-for-wasting-so-much-time-doing-it-the-hard-way, trick you discovered?

For me ... it is that I spent way toooo long being a spectator and not getting in the game. I discovered that the truly best way to learn is to start doing it on your own. Don't worry about making mistakes, that is all part of the game!

I found that ready, shoot, aim, was a better business model for the Newbie than to spend countless hours in analysis paralysis! As soon as I jumped in with both feet and committed then I started to make money. The biggest trick and biggest hurdle is in your own mind!

Thanks,

Todd

    Hi Todd

My biggest 'do it wrong thing' was to have too many projects on the go at the
same time, which meant working really hard and achieving 'not so much'.

I now only work on one project at a time.

The second thing I realised was that I should not use the usual IM tactics to sell into IM but sell into another niche....I chose golf and haven't looked back

    Cheers

      Jumping from project to project.
Not targeting the right keywords that bring traffic and appropriate backlinking.

I had the same problem as Steve when i first started. It really does put a damper on your progress when you try to juggle to many projects at the same time.

Steve - i love your golf site

Riz, I think most internet marketers are guilty of this same sin ... too much going on and not focusing on one opportunity.

I was putting too much effort into my landing pages for a very long time.

I finally boiled it down to a simple principle and started killing it (I was spending way too much time putting these things together).

I now cut a quick video (using a flip camera) and say the following.

      1) Who I am (That easy)
      2) What I've got ("The best method to INSERT THING")
      2) Why it Works (overcome objections and list values of #2)
      3) How you get it (point them to the email signup or "buy" button)

My pages went from being text filled messes....to a headline, a video, and an optin box... and they make money...

    Focus.
It is not easy as I think.
I had joined some forums, purchased some expensive ebooks, read hundred Guru's blogs and have thousand ideas in my mind but there is no result because I never implement it 100%.That's because I'm "too busy" wasting my time and money and to find shortcut to success. But I never found it. Because there is no shortcut to success.
It is a simple but powerful tips for newbie:
be focus in one field. set the target.success.
    regards,

    Not Testing!

I have only been a member of this forum for a year.
Before then I never really heard much about testing options.
I would just create or sell something an watch if it sold or not.
I was confident I did everything right.
I guess I kinda had the mentality of an eBay seller.
    This forum Rocks!

Great marketing beats a great product or service. I use to spend little on PPC, but no more. To sell well you need exposure.

Reading and not implementing.. I read almost every WSO i've seen.

Today I made over 10 money sites. I didn't evne have to research the keyword, just picked 10 affiliate marketing campaigns and took traffic from people. great day.

Then i read the 30 info products in 30 days, so i made a few.
Then i spun every WSO i ever read into a course and sought venture capital.

    Now i travel for fun

It's amazing how quickly you can get overloaded with everything...
Props on getting so much done today... Pretty sweet when you can go to bed and have a bunch of things that might help alot of people (and make you some cash in the process) by the time you wake up the next day.

Really I did 2 things wrong for awhile, and if I had done these things right when I started in this business 2 years ago I may be sitting on a beach somewhere making 30K/month.

    1. Don't just blindly submit articles to article directories. There are so many other ways that you can leverage just one piece of content, and drive a ton of traffic in the process. You can place these articles on document sharing websites, convert them to Powerpoint slides and submit them to slideshare.net and other sites, and of course use them on your own blog. You don't have to write 20 articles a day to be successful, in fact you will probably burn out!

    2. Build a list. Building a list has taken my business to new heights in a very short period of time. By building a list, you are creating a huge advantage over the vast majority of your competition. Do you know what happens when you have a list of 5,000 targeted prospects? If you manage your list well and provide value, it means that with each mailing you should be able to send 1,000+ visitors to any offer you desire. An easy source of targeted traffic!

Leverage your content effectively, and build a targeted email list!

Not blogging. I have been begged to do it for 3 years now. I fought it. Literally went kicking and screaming. Now... I finally am.

And it's amazing. I love being able to communicate with my clients, other copywriters, students. I'm seriously hooked.

Focusing on too many things at once and not providing quality was my biggest problem.

Quality beats quantity every time I have found.

Now we work on only one website at a time and only on a handful of pages at any one time.

I think I have made all the big mistakes.

        1.) Reading/learning and not implementing/taking action
2.) Trying to do way too much at once and not really getting anything done well/at all
3.) Being inconsistent with time put in/actions taken
        4.) Not being focused
5.) Looking for the next best thing/magic pill
        6.) Not building lists
7.) Not making my own products

I'm sure there are more mistakes I have or am still making.

The best change I've made is dedication/determination to keep on keepin' on and not give up.

On one of my sites I spent a year working it with SEO only to see it rise and fall on Googles whims and not make a penny

I started in PPC for that site in Feb and made money almost straight away - while I still work on back links etc for that site my principle traffic is PPC , very cheap and instant!

1 year ? 1 year ? wow. The worst i've waited is 3 weeks to move about 10 pages using high pr backlinks. But 1 year. I've not encountered a keyword that I can't rank for top 3 in under 6 months. Sometimes 3 weeks.
