Question for those that use press releases

I have been reading a lot about press releases and how they can flood your server with traffic. If I understand what I am reading, this traffic will only last for a fre hours to a few days. So I was wondering how many press releases would someone use during say a week or a month?

Is it prudent to publish miltiple press releases during a month? Is there a point of diminishing returns to this method?

Any other points you would like to make about press releases, I would be interested to know your thoughts. I guess I am just a little fascinated by this topic. I am a news junkie, so maybe that is why. But the thought of being able to drive massive amounts of traffic like this tends to interest me too.

    Hi Tim,

PR is very hit and miss. You can get to the top of google news easily using sites like AddPr.com (free) and PRWeb (paid).

I have not had HUGE traffic success with free PR, however it is great for link building, good quality, long term links.

    Cheers,
    Mukul

You can get some good links from press releases, but it is best to use a paid service like PRWeb. Here are some others:

      prnuke.com
      prlog.org
      press-base.com
      pressexposure.com
      prurgent.com
      prbuzz.com
      prfree.com
      freepressindex.com
      transworldnews.com

Make sure that the press release is quality though.

Online media releases can be sensational for SEO, but don't confuse traffic with links.

A well written release that has some 'news', and distributed by one of the better paid services may result in thousands of sites that subscribe to the service automatically having the release added to their sites - which then results in automatic Twitter/Facebook posts and blogs posts. Its a real machine and fascinating to watch.

My top clients have really embraced the online media release phenomenon - there is a formula to compiling a good release - and we have found that one or two a month is the maximum.

To test free vs paid, rewrite your release and submit it to a free service as well. (I've found that these tend to appear on more generic blog sites rather than news service sites.)

I think you will find that any 'traffic' will come from these news services rather than blogs.

I wouldn't say PR causes a flood of traffic, unless you get really lucky and some outlet picks up the release, but that is not very common.

The thing about PR is that it typically results in a lot of free backlinks. Backlinks will help you rank better in organic search results.

For my corporate clients I send out a new press release very week. But I do so only for SEO purposes as it is a really great way to get a ton of anchor text back links. The traffic that comes in through the releases themselves is minimal at best. But then again I write them for the back links and am not really trying to get click throughs. So if you craft your release with click throughs in mind you should be able to pull in some good results.

The key either way is to get your PR syndicated. The best way to do that is to include heavily searched keywords in the title of your PR. Make sure to stay away from long tailed keywords however as they tend to get syndicated far less. So if you're doing a PR release for "Acme's New Duralax 300 Skin Cream" use the keyword "skin cream" in the title instead.
