Setting up your Opt-in Box - Which Way Is Best

I am unsure as to what the best way is to set up an opt - in.

1. After customer signs up with name and email, opt in box to disappear and simply leave visitor where there are at the top of the sales page. The visitor will then go to their email "at their convenience" and will see an email - opening their automated confirmation email and clicking on a given link confirming that they requested for the guide.

Which is then followed by a second automated email containing a link that the visitor clicks on to actually download the Free guide in PDF Format.

OR

2. After visitor signing up they would automaticllay be taken away from the sales page to Thank You For Signing Up For Your Free Report page!

Hi there, thank you for signing up for your free report. etc etc.

Which is the better option or does it really make a difference? I have seen some sites do it either way.
Many thanks

  • You want to send them to a download page, or at least to a page where you notify them that the download link has been sent to their email address. But at any rate, you gotta give them instructions upon opting in.

Your new subscriber should immediately be redirected to a Thank You page when they hit the "Submit" button which should do two things: 1) Remind them to click the confirmation link in their e-mail inbox (if you're using double opt-in) and 2) Say something like "If you'd like to learn more about XYZ, then you'll love my new XYZ system which teaches you A, B, C. Click here to learn more!" The "Click here" link should take them to your sales page.

When your subscriber goes to their inbox and clicks on the confirmation link, they should be redirected to a Thank You page which does two things: 1) Thanks them for subscribing and 2) Says something like "If you'd like to learn more about XYZ, then you'll love my new XYZ system which teaches you A, B, C. Click here to learn more!" The "Click here" link should take them to your sales page.

So your subscriber sees your thanks page twice and has two opportunities to click on the link to your sales page. Or, you can redirect them to your sales page when they click on the link in their inbox.

Be willing to play around with it and test to see what works best with your subscribers. Just make sure that they know you appreciate their trust (thank them) and will respect their privacy by not giving out their contact information.

    Hope that helps!

"You can't market here. This is a marketing discussion forum!"

If it is on a sales page... I'd think twice to put up an optin form. The simple reason is: the only goal on a sales page is to convince the visitor to buy. Everything else will just distract them.

On the other hand, if you think it must be there, then just make the form to disappear and leave the reader/visitor exactly where he was before filling out the optin form.

I had an opt-in form on a sales page because the copy was referring to a free report of mine and if they opted in the form disappeared and was replaced by a text saying "you'll get the report in your Inbox, now just continue reading... etc." Otherwise, if you take them away from the sales page - it's almost sure you will lose the sale

Istvan, thanks. After the box disappears, where is the text to explain "you'll get the report in your inbox continue reading etc?" is it another pop up? or part of the content in the sales page. Sorry I understood what you were saying I just didn't know exactly how this bit would work.

Thanks if you can explain again.

I was using a script/plugin called actionoptin and it was set uplike this:
    - the optin form was in the sales page (no popup)
    - the whole optin box/form has been replaced by that text in the sales page.

      I use Aweber.

So what I did was this:

When I first put my list together: On step 2, at the Confirmation Page, I clicked the "edit intro" tab and put "I'm glad you're interested in receiving my blog posts by email. You will also receive a free report entitled XXXX. Enjoy". It's a good place to mention your free gift without having to create a separate thank you page.

Scroll to the bottom where it says Success Page: what page of your website do you want to send people when they confirm?, put in the URL of your free gift.

Then when I set up the Web Form, in step 2 there's a tab that says Already Subscribed Page, select Custom Page and input the URL address of the free gift you're offering.

In the same section, I also set the Thank You Page to Audio Version. After the person inputs their details into my opt-in form, they're re-directed to Aweber's audio reminder that goes "In a moment you will receive a message in your email..." This is to remind people to check their email.

Then when they check their email, they'll get a message that says: I'm glad you're interested in receiving my blog posts by email. You will also receive a free report entitled XXXX. Enjoy"

They click on the link and immediately get the free gift.

You can always test it on yourself to make sure it goes smoothly.

      That's pretty much it.
